Nicasio has to be the happiest pitcher in baseball. How do I know that? Because he went from playing for the Rockies (Coors Field) to pitching for the Pirates (PNC Park). His numbers should improve across the board this season. He started with a strong outing against the Cardinals, striking out seven batters while only giving up one run. Nicasio has always had an above-average strikeout rate and he can afford to be more aggressive with hitters this season, which should help him cut down on his walks. He’s worth keeping an eye on moving forward, but can safely be avoided against the Tigers in Comerica Park.

Sanchez had a mediocre outing in his first start of the season, allowing two runs over five innings against the Marlins. He only struck out three batters, which was my main concern heading into this year. His strikeout rate has steadily declined over the last few seasons. If you are playing the early-only slate (two games), Sanchez may be worth a look as a pivot from in tournaments. For the all-day slate, there are better pitching options to target.

Pittsburgh
The Pirates’ offense has gotten off to a quick start this season, scoring at least four runs in five of their first seven games. Of the fourt teams in the early slate, the Pirates have the second highest team total behind the Tigers. I prefer to target the right-handed hitters in this lineup, as has allowed a .368 wOBA and 17 home runs to right-handed bats since the start of last season.

The Tigers have the highest team total of the four teams in the early slate and the ninth highest in the all-day slate. has been very tough on right-handed hitters throughout his career, but has allowed a .398 wOBA to left-handed hitters since the start of last season. I’m not going to purposely avoid the righties in the Tigers’ lineup, but I’m not sure that I want to a premium for them in this matchup either.

Corbin somehow managed to last seven innings in his first start of the season, despite giving up eight hits and throwing only 88 pitches. The knock on Corbin last season was that the Diamondbacks rarely stretched him for more than 90 pitches in each outing. The Dodgers used to be a team that we could use left-handed pitchers against, but it appears that they will only have two left-handed hitters in their lineup today. As the biggest underdog in the two early games, Corbin is an easy fade.

Maeda was sharp in his first major league start, striking out four batters in six shutout innings against the Padres. We weren’t too concerned about him being overwhelmed, as he has plenty of experience over in Japan. He is by far the top pitching option in the early slate of games, as he is a -170 favorite, pitching at home in a game that features a total of only 7.0 runs. He also has the advantage of hitters having to face him for the very first time. Maeda has great control and should be able to hit his spots today against the Diamondbacks, who are a much different offense away from Chase Field.

The Diamondbacks draw a difficult matchup against , who was terrific in his first major league start. To make matters worse, they have to face him in the pitcher-friendly Dodger Stadium. I never like targeting hitters on teams with such a low team total. Of the 24 teams on the schedule today, the Diamondbacks have the second lowest on the board. and both have a wOBA over .400 against right-handed pitching, but are deep GPP fliers at best.

The Dodgers may be large favorites today, but is a capable pitcher with a high strikeout rate. This isn’t a matchup that we need to go out of our way to get exposure to. In those five starts, he posted a 4.28 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 18.9%. As long as he pitches well, he is expected to be the Braves’ fifth starter. Gonzalez was one of the most frustrating pitchers in daily fantasy baseball last season. Granted, wins the ultimate tilt award, but Gio wasn’t far behind in the voting. His statistics look great, as he has a 3.77 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 22.3%. His biggest issue has always been his command. He produces an elite ground ball rate, but he walks over 9% of the batters that he faces. The good news for Gonzalez is that he is pitching at home against a Braves’ offense that is ranked dead last in wOBA against left-handed pitching. At his price point, he is one of the top pitching targets on the board.

Erlin will draw the start tonight, as the Padres had to shift their rotation around after placing on the DL. He made a relief appearance a few days ago and will likely be limited in terms of his pitch count tonight against the Phillies. Even if Erlin was able to throw 90+ pitches, he wouldn’t a great fantasy option anyway. He has had a very low strikeout rate as a starter and the total for this game is set at a generous 8.5 runs. Morton is a ground-ball pitcher with a below-average strikeout rate (17.0%). He doesn’t give up a ton of fly balls, but when he does hitters can usually make solid contact against him. Morton wasn’t sharp in his first start of the season against the Reds and while the Padres present a favorable matchup for strikeouts, the total for this game suggests that there will be a lot of runs scored. I’m always willing to take a chance on pitchers against the Padres, but Morton is a deep GPP flier at best tonight.

Tanaka is making his second start of the season, after giving up two runs in five and two-thirds innings against the Astros. He is still dealing with that elbow injury, but his velocity looked good on Opening Day. There are going to be times when we can target Tanaka in DFS, but not tonight against the Blue Jays. Since the start of last season, Toronto is ranked first in team wOBA against right-handed pitching and first in team wOBA at home. Tanaka is way overpriced for this matchup and should be avoided in all league formats.

Sanchez was solid in his first start of the season, striking out eight batters in seven innings of work against the Rays. He is a pitcher with some nice strikeout potential, as he has had a 20%+ strikeout rate all through the minors and into the majors. The issue that I have with Sanchez tonight is the matchup and the ballpark. The Yankees are ranked fifth in team wOBA against right-handed pitching and the Rogers Centre is arguably the best hitter’s park in the American League. I do, however, love the price point on Sanchez. He is a sneaky GPP play on multi-pitcher sites.
Batter Grind Down
NY Yankees
The Yankees are small underdogs tonight in Toronto, but this is still an exploitable matchup for fantasy production. We always like targeting hitters in the Rogers Centre and has struggled with left-handed hitters in the past (.370 wOBA allowed). The Yankees have the tenth highest team total on the board, so don’t hesitate to use the hitters in this lineup if you like the matchup.

Toronto
Even though the Blue Jays face an ace in , they still have the fourth highest team total on the board. That is a testament to the talent level of their offense, as well as the potential run production in the Rogers Centre. Tanaka has given up pretty equal splits to both left and right-handed hitters. While I like the Blue Jays’ offense as a whole, they seem a bit too expensive individually.
