Simon has been an easy pitcher to avoid in DFS. Through six starts this season, he has a 4.61 SIERA with a strikeout rate of only 17.8%. He doesn’t fare particularly well against hitters from either side of the plate and he has allowed 33 home runs in his last 37 starts. He should not be on your radar against the Indians (or any other team for that matter). Simon checks in as the second largest underdog in the entire slate tonight.

If you are playing in the early-only slate on FanDuel, you can certainly take a look at Salazar. He is an elite strikeout pitcher that has started off the season well. In his first seven starts, he has a 3.57 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 31.4%. His high walk rate is a small concern, but his ability to rack up strikeouts more than makes up for it. His price on FanDuel is also very playable at only $9,100. Oh, and don’t let me forget the favorable matchup. On the season, the Reds are ranked 27th in team wOBA and 24th in team strikeout rate against right-handed pitching.

Blair is making his fourth career major league start. He hasn’t enjoyed any success just yet, as he currently sports a 6.46 SIERA with a walk rate (13.3%) that is higher than his strikeout rate (8.4%). We generally like to avoid any pitcher with a K/BB ratio less than 2.00 and Blair’s is under 1.00. He should be avoided in all league formats tonight against the Pirates, who have the fifth highest team wOBA against right-handed pitching this season.

Nicasio is always on my radar when he is pitching at home in PNC Park. In his first seven starts of the season, he owns a 3.98 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 23.6%. He generates a high swinging strike rate and he has held batters to a 17.3% hard hit contact rate this season. He draws one of the top matchups on the board, as the Braves are ranked 29th in team wOBA and 30th in team ISO against right-handed pitching. Nicasio could be a cheap source of a win and he offers nice strikeout upside as well.

The Pirates have the fifth highest team total on the board tonight, as they square off against at home. The sample size for Blair’s splits is obviously too small to put any stock into, but you have to like the left-handed bats from the Pirates. With so many great pitching options on the board, it could be a night where we have to go cheap with our bats. Any value that you can find will go a long way.

Chen has been super frustrating in his last two starts. After failing to record a single strikeout against the Phillies at home, he struck out 12 batters against the Brewers. He has a chance for some revenge tonight, as the squares off against the Phillies once again. While I’m a fan of the matchup, Chen seems a bit expensive with this game being played on the road. I much prefer against the Braves and he is considerably cheaper on both FanDuel and DraftKings.

Velasquez has cooled off a bit since his hot start, but he still boasts a 3.21 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 28.7%. He has great velocity and he generates a high swinging strike rate of 11.5%. Velasquez is listed as a small underdog tonight against the Marlins, but he has more upside than Chen and the two are similarly price on FanDuel. I’m not sure that you have to look this way in cash games, but Velasquez makes a strong GPP play given his strikeout upside.

Miley has pitched better than most people would realize this season. In his seven starts, he has a 3.87 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 19.0%. He has given up a lot of home runs though, which is the main reason he has a 4.91 ERA. We can expect some positive regression to come his way soon, although I don’t expect that to happen tonight against the Orioles. They have a stacked lineup and Miley has to face them in the hitter-friendly Camden Yards.

While a high walk rate isn’t ideal, we can stomach it when it is accompanied by a high strikeout rate. The problem for Jimenez this season is that he isn’t striking batters out at a high enough rate to offset his bad command. He may be listed as a favorable tonight at home, but the total for the game is set at 9.0 runs. His matchup against the Mariners is less than ideal, as they are ranked 11th in both team wOBA and team ISO against right-handed pitching this season.

The Mariners may be small underdogs tonight, but they come into the game with the seventh highest team total on the board. They hit right-handed pitching well as a team and they see a nice ballpark boost playing in Camden Yards. Over the last two seasons, has allowed a .329 wOBA to left-handed hitters and a .331 wOBA to right-handed hitters.

Archer has turned it around since the start of the season, but he still struggles with his command at times. On the year, he has a 3.60 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 27.8% and a walk rate of 10.8%. He draws a difficult matchup tonight against the Blue Jays in Toronto. Given all of the aces that are available in tonight’s slate, there is no reason to target Archer against a potent offense in a hitter-friendly ballpark.

Stroman is coming off of two fantastic starts. He now has a 3.61 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 18.2% on the season. He doesn’t walk many batters and he produces an elite ground ball rate of 62.3%. That ground ball rate allows him to succeed in even the most hitter-friendly of ballparks. He checks into tonight’s game as a sizable favorite against a Rays’ offense that has struggled against right-handed pitching. If this was a different slate, I would consider Stroman, but there are so many great pitching options that I will likely look elsewhere.

The Rays exploded for 13 runs last night against and the Blue Jays (remember that regression that I mentioned was coming for Happ?). They draw a tougher test tonight, as has held both left and right-handed hitters under a .270 wOBA over the last two seasons. While the ballpark gives their offense a nice boost, I don’t like targeting hitters against elite ground ball pitchers.

The Blue Jays’ offense continues to sputter. On the season, they are averaging 4.08 runs per game, which is the tenth lowest in the majors. They are ranked below the league average in both team wOBA and team strikeout rate against right-handed pitching. They also draw a difficult matchup against , who boasts an elite strikeout rate. You can look to the Jays in tournaments, but there are better cash game targets.
