Cain has had a poor season this year, as he comes into this game with a 4.70 SIERA and a very low 16.4% strikeout rate. Tonight is a slate where you can simply avoid his low upside in a tough matchup against a team’s ace and a high projected offense.

Strasburg has been solid this year for the Nationals. He has a stellar 2.63 ERA, which is backed up by his 3.12 SIERA. His elite strikeout rate of 30.7% is fourth in the MLB, and now gets a decent matchup against the Giants, who are ranked 17th in wOBA and 26th in ISO against righties. Run support should be plentiful for Strasburg, and he should easily be in line for the win today. He is the top option of the day.
Batter Grind Down
San Francisco
The Giants have the third-lowest projected total of the day at just 3.19 runs. Strasburg has shut down all batters this year, allowing a wOBA of under .255 to both lefties and righties. The Giants are an easy offense to avoid.

Cain has really struggled against left-handed batters this year (.403 wOBA allowed), which bodes well for some of the Nationals hitters today such as Murphy and Harper. The Nationals have the fifth-highest projected total and are in play in all formats.

Verrett is a pitcher who should not be on your radar, for a few reasons: he has a low strikeout rate of just 15.5% and a high SIERA of 5.02, he rarely pitches deep into games, and he has a very tough matchup against the Tigers, who are ranked fifth and ninth in wOBA and ISO respectively against righties. Look elsewhere for pitching tonight.

Boyd sports a 4.18 SIERA and a 20.8% strikeout rate in nine starts this year, yet consistency has been tough for the him. He has been blown up in a couple games, while keeping his opponents to one earned run or fewer in four of those nine starts. His matchup against the Mets is a not the worst, as they are are ranked 19th against lefties in wOBA and are now without their best righty bat in . Boyd is not a safe pitcher by any means, but he can be used as a cheap SP2.
Batter Grind Down
NY Mets
Boyd has shut down lefties this year (.237 wOBA allowed), yet has allowed a .338 wOBA to righties on the year. This allows you to attack some of the cheaper value righties that may shift higher in the order today for the Mets.

Tillman has been solid this year, as he comes into this game with a 3.46 ERA with a 21.0% strikeout rate. His SIERA does sit over a run higher than his ERA, which shows his second half of his season may not be as good, but tonight he gets a decent matchup against the White Sox, who are ranked in the bottom third of the league in both wOBA and ISO. This game does feature a high total of nine runs, and the Orioles are small favorites. Tillman can be in play, but there are a couple better mid-priced options tonight.

Rodon got a rough welcome back from injury, as he allowed five earned in 6.1 innings in his last start. The silver lining for Rodon was that he did strike out seven batters, which always gives him a bit of upside (22.4% strikeout rate). The boom-or-bust nature of the matchup against the Orioles is there, but it may be more bust than boom tonight, and there is just too much risk to give him a go.
Batter Grind Down
Baltimore
The Orioles offense looks to be in a great spot against Rodon tonight, as he has kept lefties at bay (.231 wOBA allowed) but has really struggled with righties (.382 wOBA allowed). Baltimore has a high 4.73 projected run total and have enough righty mashers that a stack may be in play tonight.

Harrell made his first for the Rangers and pitched pretty much as expected. He has a 5.21 SIERA in his low sample size this year with a low 15.5% strikeout rate. The matchup tonight is too risky to consider Harrell in any format, as the Astros are a high-powered offense that has a very high projected run total tonight.

Fister has actually had a decent year as he comes into this game with a 3.56 ERA. Yet, he is not someone who provides a whole lot of upside, as he has one of the lowest strikeout rates you will see out of a starter at just 15.8%. His SIERA of 4.82 shows some clear regression coming, making Fister an easy avoid.

Texas
Both offenses look to be in good spots tonight, as the overall total is set at nine. Texas has a decent matchup against Fister, and the lefties should be attacked, as he has allowed a .363 wOBA to lefties on the season while keeping righties to a wOBA of just .243.

Folty has had a rough month of July, putting up a 5.50 ERA (4.14 SIERA) in six starts. He has a tough matchup against the Cardinals today, as they are ranked second and first in wOBA and ISO respectively against right-handed pitching. Avoid him tonight.

Martinez has been solid this year for the Cardinals as he has put up a 2.99 ERA on the year and a 19.9% strikeout rate. Some regression is in order as his SIERA does sit more than a run higher at 4.14. Yet, his matchup is ideal today against the Braves who as we know are ranked last in the league in runs per game, as well as wOBA and ISO against righties. The matchup alone puts Cmart into play and he is a great option tonight.

The Braves are rarely an offense to ever target unless the pitcher they are facing is far below average. That is not the case tonight, and the Braves have the second-lowest projected total of the day. There is no need to use their offense.
