2016-08-07 01:18:14 The RotoGrinders MLB Grind Down will give you an in-depth analysis into the upcoming MLB schedule. This article will break down the numbers for every single game and give you analysis on which trends you can exploit. While matchups are a major factor in daily fantasy baseball, there are plenty of other factors to consider such as injuries, weather, and salaries.
The analysis should point you in the right direction, but it is still up to you to decipher the information and make your own selections. No sport has more variance than baseball. The best choice is not always the right choice but following the trends will win you money over time.

Kluber continues to pitch well this year, as he comes into this game with a 3.43 SIERA and a high 25.5% strikeout rate. He pitches in Yankee Stadium today, which is not as scary as it once was, as the Yankees are ranked in the bottom third of the league against right-handed pitching as well as in runs scored overall. While we don’t have to make the decision on DraftKings, I have him right behind Arrieta on the day slate.

Sabathia has been a tough play in fantasy over the last few years. That has continued this year, especially lately, as he has allowed at least four earned runs in seven of his last eight starts. He has a high 4.70 SIERA and a low 17.4% strikeout rate. That combination is terrible against this Indians offense, who rank fifth in the league in runs scored. There are a number of good options early, and Sabathia simply carries too much risk to be in consideration.
Batter Grind Down
Cleveland
Historically, Sabathia has been horrible against right-handed bats while being able to shut down lefties. That has evened out this year, as he has allowed a .307 to lefties and .312 to righties. This Indians offense is very much in play in the day slate as the second-highest projected offense of the four games.

NY Yankees
Kluber has held batters to a wOBA of under .279 from both sides of the plate this year. The Yankees offense has sputtered this year, and Vegas believes that continues today, as they have just a 3.69 projected run total, the sixth-lowest of the entire day. They are not an offense to focus much attention on.

After fixing some issues with tipping pitches, Rodriguez has pitched well since the break, posting a 2.63 ERA and a strikeout rate of 21.7% in four games in the second half. He now faces a Dodgers team that is ranked 28th and 27th in wOBA and ISO against left-handed pitching this year. It is extremely difficult to predict which Rodriguez you are going to see today, and I would suggest just playing him in tournament settings until he can show some consistency over time.

Stripling looks to be making the start today for the Dodgers. In his eight starts (12 appearances) this year, he has a 4.14 ERA (4.39 SIERA) and 17.5% strikeout rate. The problem is the length of his start will likely be short, as he has not started since late May. The matchup against the Red Sox makes him an easy avoid, as they are the number one ranked team in wOBA against righties.
Batter Grind Down
Boston
The Red Sox have a 4.22 projected run total against Stripling, which is surprisingly in the bottom half of the team totals today. With that said, they have a great matchup against Stripling today and can be targeted in all formats.

Rodriguez struggled out of the gate in 2016, which is why, even with a string of decent performances as of late, his wOBA allowed still sits above .352 from both sides of the plate. Vegas at least somewhat believes in the Boston lefty, though, as the Dodgers have just a 4.28 projected run total, which is right in the middle of the 30 teams playing.

Arrieta has had a couple decent starts since the break and still sports a season ERA of just 2.75 (3.63 SIERA). He always has a lot of upside, as his strikeout rate is at 25.7%, and he’s in a plus matchup in Oakland against an Athletics team that ranks 24th in wOBA and 21st in ISO against righties. Arrieta is an elite option and should be the chalk play of the early slate as a -200 favorite.

has been one of the most disappointing pitchers in the league this year. He comes into this game with a very high 5.84 ERA and a low 18.5% strikeout rate. His SIERA of 4.28 suggests some improvements should be made in the second half of the season, but today is not the day to hope that will happen. The Cubs are ranked eighth in team wOBA against righties and have the fourth-highest runs per game total in the league. The matchup alone makes Gray a tough pitcher to trust today.

Arrieta has held batters to a wOBA of under .259 from both sides of the plate this season. That does not bode well for the Athletics’ chances of scoring a whole lot of runs today, as they have the second-lowest projected offense of the entire day. Berrios returned to the Twins and pitched decent against a tough Indians squad (6 innings, 3 earned runs). More importantly, he did not walk any batters in that game, which was a problem earlier in the season, as he walked 12 batters in his previous four starts combined. He gets a much easier matchup today in a pitcher’s park against the Rays, who are ranked 21st in wOBA against righties and 25th overall in runs scored per game. At his price, he looks like a solid SP2 today or as a GPP option.

Archer has not been an elite pitcher this year like he was last year, but he has been usable in daily fantasy. He comes into this game with a solid 3.63 SIERA to go along with his 27.1% strikeout rate. He gets a decent matchup on paper against the Twins, but is facing them as they are swinging hot bats (43 runs scored in last five games). One stat to point out is Archer is a much better home pitcher (3.03 ERA) than away (5.83 ERA). These factors make him a great start in all formats and a nice price saving from Arrieta or Kluber.

You can make a case for taking some Twins today, as they continue to put up solid run totals in the last week. Vegas does not believe that will continue today, and neither do I, as Archer has a long track record of dominance in his home park. Twins bats are tournament plays only against Archer, who has allowed a .319 wOBA to lefties and .318 to righties.

Bailey finally returned from a couple surgeries on his elbow and forearm and pitched well in his debut, striking out six over 5.2 innings while throwing 89 pitches. He hasn’t really pitched since the 2014 season, when he had a solid year (3.60 SIERA). He is someone to watch going forward and is playable at that price at FD for tournament settings. Just know that, given his potential innings limit, he comes with a good amount of risk.

After a couple decent starts in a row, Nova went back to the average pitcher we have seen most of the season as he allowed five runs in just 4.1 innings. He now has a 4.90 ERA (4.00 SIERA) and an underwhelming 17.8% strikeout rate. His matchup against the Reds is not terrible, as they are in the bottom half of the league in all the offensive categories shown. Still, he is very tough to trust regardless of the matchup.

Nova has struggled over the course of the season, which is shown by his .365 wOBA allowed to lefties and .340 wOBA allowed to righties. The Reds are projected to score 4.10 runs, which is 11th-lowest of the day. They are in play today, but there are better offenses to target.
