Dallas hasn’t been able to gain much momentum lately, after after losing a tough 5-4 decision against Minnesota Wild on Saturday, they’ll head out on a very important three game road trip. Dallas owns an ugly 6-11-4 record away from American Airlines Arena this season and will need to get it turned around very quickly if they plan on climbing back into the playoff hunt in the Western Conference. Despite their struggles, Dallas is a fine team to target in DFS as they still rate as one of the fastest paced teams in the entire league (118.35 CP60). Offensively, its the duo of Tyler Seguin and Jamie Benn that require your attention every time they take the ice. Seguin leads the team with 43 points in 44 games while Benn is having a fine season of his own with 10 goals and 25 assists in 40 games. They’re slated to be joined by Patrick Eaves on both the top forward line and #1 power-play unit, and with Buffalo owning an atrocious and league-worst 74.2% penalty kill, stacking all three is a very viable GPP (and even cash game) strategy. Jason Spezza joins those three with the man-advantage and is an elite playmaker. He’s already dished out 12 power-play assists this season and tends to be overshadowed by the Seguin and Benn as far as DFS ownership is considered. On defense, John Klingberg is back to putting up big offensive numbers. He scored a goal and added a pair of assists against the Wild on Saturday night and has now posted four goals and four assists in six games this month.

The Buffalo front office has brought in some nice building blocks for future success, but unfortunately both injuries and inconsistent play have already doomed their 2016-17 campaign. They’ll return home for tonight’s game having dropped two straight games and now sitting in the cellar of the Atlantic Division. Buffalo has averaged an unsightly 2.29 goals per game but they should benefit from tonight’s matchup thanks to the Stars aforementioned quick pace and the fact that Dallas has coughed up 3.05 goals per game this season. Muddying the waters, however, is Dan Bylsma’s insistence on trying to spread out his scoring threats across three different forward lines. When healthy, Ryan O’Reilly is having a nice offensive season (25 points in 32 games) and has developed a nice rapport with Kyle Okposo on the top forward line. Meanwhile, former second overall draft pick Sam Reinhart is emerging as a dangerous weapon and looks dangerous alongside Evander Kane on the “third” line. This leaves Jack Eichel to play alongside mediocre linemates in Brian Gionta and Marcus Foligno, and that really suppresses what could be his very high ceiling. I touched on Buffalo’s NHL worst penalty kill earlier, but Dallas hasn’t been much better as they own a Western Conference worst 75.2% penalty kill. With that poor penalty kill and unfriendly offensive groupings in mind, targeting the Buffalo power-play seems like the proper strategy. Rasmus Ristolainen has cooled off lately but still sees all the minutes he can handle on the point of the top power-play unit and does a great job racking up fantasy points with his peripheral stats.

The Islanders will wrap up a three game road trip tonight owning the worst record in the Eastern Conference. They were lit up for seven goals by Carolina Hurricanes over the weekend and have dropped four of their last five games. With 13 other teams to target tonight, it’s pretty tough to trust this hockey club in cash games at this point. Offensively, all eyes will be on John Tavares as he leads the Islanders with 32 points in 41 games and is easily their most dangerous offensive weapon. Anders Lee and Josh Bailey benefit from playing alongside their talented captain, but their one-dimensional offensive attack also means these three will likely be shadowed all over the ice by the pesky defense of both Patrice Bergeron and Brad Marchand. Anders Lee is fresh off a two point performance on Saturday and did erupt for two goals and an assist when these two teams squared off earlier this season, so you can see the GPP upside. On defense, both Nick Leddy and Johnny Boychuk soak up nearly all of the available playing time on the point of the power-play and are locked into huge minutes with Travis Hamonic sidelined. Leddy has showed a bit more offensive upside (seven goals and 14 assists) and has been red-hot lately with two goals and four assists in five games this month.

With an impressive 6-3 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday, the Bruins still sit in second place in the Atlantic Division. However, with three teams chasing them closely (with games in hand), they simply can’t afford to leave two points on the table in tonight’s home matchup against a very beatable New York Islanders team. For some added motivation, the Bruins will also be looking for revenge after dropping a 4-2 decision the only other time these two teams squared off this season. Up-front, Claude Julien relies very heavily on each of his top two forward lines to carry the weight offensively, and with the Islanders having surrendered an ugly 3.05 goals against per game this season, they will both likely be rather popular. Brad Marchand leads the charge with 43 points in 46 games and is thriving on the top line alongside Patrice Bergeron and David Pastrnak. Pastrnak has cooled off a bit lately (as far as goal scoring goes), while Bergeron is finally starting to heat up (a goal and three assists over the last four games) after a very slow start to the season. Alternatively, David Krejci joins forces with David Backes and Frank Vatrano on the second line. All six players also see a healthy dose of playing time with the man-advantage, which bodes well for them tonight against the Islander’s ugly 79.7% penalty kill. This also pushes Torey Krug towards the top of my defensive rankings. The blue-liner has now scored goals in three straight games and owns three goals and 11 assists over his last 12 games.

The Canadiens jumped out to an amazing 13-1-1 start to the season and now look to have have set things into “cruise control” as they wait to get healthy. Good news is that they got both Alex Galchenyuk and Andrew Shaw back into uniform over the weekend, but are still without the services of David Desharnais, Brendan Gallagher and Andrei Markov. They picked a needed win over the New York Rangers on Saturday and will now head to Detroit to face a Detroit team who they’ve defeated in both prior meetings this season. Galchenyuk immediately slotted in as the center of the top line alongside Max Pacioretty and Alexander Radulov, which likely means the end of Phillip Denault’s reign as a top-tier value option. Galchenyuk has posted an impressive 10 goals and 24 assists in just 26 games this season and his offensive abilities should benefit his two very dangerous linemates. On defense, Shea Weber should be well worth his big-ticket asking price this evening. He’s not only armed with the hardest slap shot in the NHL, but has posted a goal and six assists in seven games thus far in January and scored a goal and added an assist in two meetings against Detroit this season. With Andrei Markov still out of commission, Jeff Petry and Nathan Beaulieu are both locked into much larger roles with the offensive attack and the duties on the point of the ‘Habs’ second power-play unit.

It’s been a rough season in Detroit, but after a very tough seven game road trip, the Red Wings finally snapped their three game losing streak with an unexpected victory over the visiting Pittsburgh Penguins. While they did explode for six goals in that game Saturday night, Coach Blashill has really struggled to find some consistent scoring and nobody on this team has more than 11 goals this season. Henrik Zetterberg is showing he still has plenty left in the tank, and after scoring goals in each of the last two games, he leads Detroit with 31 points in 43 games. He’ll be joined on the top forward line by Gustav Nyquist and the impressive rookie Anthony Mantha. Mantha has racked up 11 goals and 11 assists in 28 games this season and looks to have both the size and skill to continue putting up nice offensive numbers. Alternatively, Thomas Vanek is another veteran forward that’s showing some lasting power. He owns 11 goals and 18 assists in 32 games and has picked up points in each of the last five games and seems very comfortable alongside his new linemates Andreas Athanasiou and Frans Nielsen. Athanasiou may be too inconsistent for my liking for cash game use, but the speed demon has scored four goals and added three assists in his last five games and remains very reasonably priced on most sites. Mike Green has returned to the lineup and is really the only viable option on the Detroit blue-line. He scored his eighth goal of the season on Saturday night (and added an assist) and quarterback’s Detroit’s top power-play unit.

Winnipeg will wrap up a three-game road trip tonight at the Shark Tank looking to put an end to a three game losing streak. This looks to be a very tough matchup for the Jets as they’ve struggled their way to a 9-13-3 road record this season and San Jose owns one of the better home-ice advantages in the NHL. San Jose has allowed just 2.10 goals against per game on home ice this season and that pushes Winnipeg towards GPP-only territory this evening. Losing Patrik Laine was a huge blow to this team, but they still do have plenty of forward depth and two dangerous forward lines that have can explode on any given night. The duo of Nikolaj Ehlers and Mark Scheifele have combined for 33 goals and 46 assists in 46 games this season and join forces on the top forward line along with Drew Stafford. Meanwhile, Blake Wheeler is a proven scoring threat and elevates the play of his linemates Mathieu Perreault and Bryan Little. Since this is their first meeting this season, it’s not crystal clear how Peter DeBoer will deploy Logan Couture, which does add some more uncertainty as to which group has the best matchup. Dustin Byfuglien feasted on this San Jose team last season; scoring a goal and adding four assists in their three meetings. He scored his seventh goal of the season in Los Angeles on Saturday night and his 135 shots on goal give him a very nice floor. Meanwhile, former first round pick Jacob Trouba is logging huge minutes lately (31:07 on Saturday) and owns a solid 14 points in 31 games this season which makes him a fine value option where he’s still cheap.

In what might have been their worst effort of the entire season, San Jose was shutout by the St. Louis Blues on Saturday night and were only able to throw 23 shots on net towards Carter Hutton. They’ve now slipped into third place in the Pacific Division and Peter DeBoer will obviously be expecting a strong bounce-back performance this evening. San Jose does have two very capable scoring lines, but with the Winnipeg Jets having allowed an NHL high 37 power-play goals this season, I’ll be predominately focusing on the San Jose power-play. Brent Burns leads all NHL defenseman in points and shots on goal and is therefore one of the top plays on the entire board this evening. He’s racked up 44 points in 43 games and had posted two goals and seven assists in the four games prior to the shutout loss against St. Louis. Up-front, it’s the trio of Patrick Marleau, Joe Thornton and Joe Pavelski both on the top forward line and #1 power-play unit. Pavelski trails just behind Burns with 39 points on the young season and has been far more productive on home ice where he owns eight goals and 14 assists in just 21 games at the HP Pavilion. Alternatively, Logan Couture doesn’t draw the most favorable of lines (he plays alongside Kevin Labanc and Mikkel Boedker at even strength) but he does have the luxury of skating on that very dangerous #1 power-play.

Tampa Bay entered the 2016-17 season with Stanley Cup ambitions, but they simply can’t seem to find their groove and haven’t been able to overcome the Steven Stamkos injury. They’ve stumbled their way to a 10-14-3 record without their captain and will hit the ice tonight in sixth place in the Atlantic Division. Tampa has won just one of their six games thus far during the month of January and the scheduling gods aren’t being overly friendly as they’ll open a very tough looking six game road trip tonight at the Staples Center. Offensively, Nikita Kucherov has emerged as one of the NHL’s most dangerous weapons. He’s racked up 17 goals and 23 assists in 37 games this season and headlines the top forward line alongside Ondrej Palat and Vladislav Namestnikov. Kucherov has proven to be rather matchup proof, but this group will likely draw the full attention of Anze Kopitar, which is enough to push them down my cash game rankings a bit. Alternatively, both Jonathan Drouin and Tyler Johnson have shown plenty of offensive upside and will likely draw some easier matchups. Johnson has the luxury of centering the Bolt’s top power-play unit while Drouin has picked up at least one point in four straight games. On defense, Victor Hedman is having yet another fantastic season. Brent Burns is the only defender with more points than his 38 and the 26 year old has been rolling lately as he’s posted two goals and 17 assists over the last 15 games. If you’re in search for some cost savings, Nikita Nesterov has dished out three assists in the last three games and has inherited the job as the point-man on the #1 power-play unit.

Despite being loaded with talent, the Los Angeles Kings would have missed the Stanley Playoffs had the season ended today. With that in mind, tonight’s game takes on some added importance as, after these next two home games, Los Angeles will play nine of their next ten games on the road. Los Angeles rates out as one of the top puck possession teams in the NHL (54.60 CF%) and will look to gain some momentum after picking up wins in each of their last two games. Darryl Sutter has two very dangerous scoring lines at his disposal, but it’s been Jeff Carter doing the bulk of the damage thus far. Carter has posted 23 goals and 17 assists in 40 games this season and owns two goals and five assists during his current four game point streak. Carter is slated to be joined by Tanner Pearson and Dustin Brown, leaving Anze Kopitar to center Marian Gaborik and Trevor Lewis on the “second” line. It’s been a somewhat disappointing season for Kopitar by his high-standards, but he’s heating up as we hit the stretch run and now owns a four game point streak of his own. There are several nice options on the Los Angeles blue-line. Drew Doughty took home the Norris Trophy last season and is a rock solid option on a nightly basis. Meanwhile, Alec Martinez has taken a huge step forward this season and has also picked up points in each of the last four games. The third option is Jake Muzzin who has been rather quiet all season (he has heated up lately) but still does some playing time alongside Doughty on the point of the King’s top power-play unit.
