Koehler has never been anything but an average pitcher at best, and his good side usually only shows up at home. His ERA on the road the past 3 seasons are 4.82, 4.63 and 4.23. His overall numbers for the 2015 season show a 4.67 SIERA with a 17.1% strikeout rate and 9.6% walk rate. He is one of the worst pitching choices today and should be nowhere near your radar.

Ross was a pleasant surprise for the Nationals in 2015, giving them 76 innings of a 3.64 ERA in his rookie campaign. A strong 50% ground ball rate and above average K/BB rates give him hope that he can continue his success into this year. He’s certainly not among the elite, but a strong favorite pitching at home is always worth a look if the price is right.
Miami
Ross had pronounced left-right splits in 2015 with a .351 wOBA to lefties and a .205 wOBA to righties. Those numbers will even out some, but you certainly don’t want to use right-handed bats, outside of a tournament play on Giancarlo Stanton. Overall, there is not a lot of reason to look at Miami bats today, but the left-handed bats could get a little something going.

Nationals batters are firmly in play today in all formats. Koehler doesn’t show significant splits, he allowed a .332 wOBA to lefties and a .313 wOBA to righties in 2015 with a fair amount of hard contact to both sides. Bryce Harper is in the conversation as top overall play of the day.

Smyly started the year with a rough outing against Toronto, but you can’t fault any pitcher too much for struggling with the Blue Jays (although he did give up a HR to Josh Thole). Smyly was outstanding after returning from injury in 2015, posting a 28% strikeout rate with a 3.25 in 66 innings. I’m not sure if he can keep up those numbers, but this is a talented young arm, and Baltimore does have plenty of strikeouts for the taking. Definitely a tournament only play, as the Orioles can boom or bust pretty easily, but he’s in play if you want to take a chance.

Quite simply, the Orioles do not have a good rotation this year. Mike Wright is only in the rotation due to lack of options. In his rookie season of 2015, he posted an ugly 6.04 ERA which was only slightly better than his 5.28 SIERA. He had a low 12.8% strikeout rate with a 43% fly ball rate, this is not a good combination for Camden Yards. He should not be used in any format for any reason.
Batter Grind Down
Tampa Bay
I prefer to play Rays batters against left-handed pitching, but Mike Wright is not going to scare me off. He allowed a .392 wOBA to left-handed batters and a .361 wOBA to right-handed batters in his rookie season with low strikeout numbers to both sides. Facing a weak pitcher in a good hitter’s park is a recipe for success.

Drew Smyly is not a pitcher you would normally look to attack, but this Orioles lineup has GPP upside in nearly every matchup. I don’t consider them a target by any means, but they are going to hit a lot of home runs this year, and Smyly does allow a lot of fly balls to right-handed batters.

Fister has never been a strikeout pitcher, but his numbers just continue to fall, as he posted just a 14% strikeout rate in 2015. He does have excellent control, which allows him to have success at times, but he’s just too hittable, as his 4.47 SIERA shows, to be worth anything for fantasy purposes.

It is absolutely absurd that this guy was an Opening Day starter. His four inning four run performance comes as no surprise, as he just hasn’t been able to live up to his previous expectations. He has maintained a good ground ball rate, but his strikeouts fell off a cliff last season, down to an unacceptable 12.6%, leading to a 4.75 SIERA. Stay far away.
Batter Grind Down

Houston is a risky, but high upside offense filled with power/speed batters with strikeout risk. Wily Peralta low strikeout rate is not going to play well against this lineup, and they should be near the top of your wish list, especially in tournaments.

Milwaukee
While it is going to be a long year in Milwaukee, there is enough talent in this lineup to put up some big days, especially against a pitcher like Fister, at home in their strong ballpark. Fister allowed a .386 wOBA to RHB and a .317 to LHB in 2015 and he just doesn’t have the stuff to scare off major league hitters.

Velasquez put up an iumpressive 25.1% strikeout rate in his rookie season with Houston in 2015. Moving over to the National League, he will get the chance to spend his first full season in the rotation. There is some definite upside here with his strikeout ability, but he’s likely to have some bumps in the road as well. A long shot GPP play is an option, but he’s not a safe option against this Mets offense.

Old Man Bart just keeps chugging along. His elite control has kept him relevant as a major league pitcher, and could give him one more year of decent results. But his strikeout rate is not enough to give him any upside as a fantasy asset, so you can avoid him and move on to guys with more potential.

Due to his pinpoint control and low walks, Colon is not an easy guy to use batters against, although he is very likely to give up plenty of hits.

We don’t have enough of a sample size to know anything useful about the splits for Vincent Velasquez. The Mets have enough quality hitters in their lineup to be worth a shot, but they rank pretty far down the list of targets today due to the strikeout ability of Velasquez. On the plus side, they should get to see a fair amount of the weak Phillies bullpen.

Martinez is and up-and-coming young ace with an eye on a big season if he can remain healthy. In his first full season as a starter in 2015, he threw more than a strikeout per inning with a strong 54.5% ground ball rate, leading to a 3.01 ERA with a 3.44 SIERA. He is worth a look against Atlanta today.

Teheran had a down year in 2015, due to some bad luck in a high HR/FB%, but also an increase in his walk rate. He certainly has the skills for a bounce back, but it’s best to play it safe in the early going and view him as a league average pitcher, which is what his 20.3% strikeout rate implies. He is not really in play today outside of a very long shot GPP lineup.
Batter Grind Down
St. Louis
Teheran fell apart against left-handed batters in 2015 allowing a .386 wOBA with a 15.2% strikeout rate and 11.1% walk rate. The Cardinals came out of the gate slowly in 2016, but put up seven runs last night, and can be considered sparingly today.

Atlanta
Carlos Martinez was very tough on right-handed batters, and only slightly easier on lefties, with a .329 wOBA allowed. I don’t see much reason to use Braves batters today, though Freddie Freeman is certainly worth mentioning.
