At this point in his career, Gallardo is attackable any time he takes the mound. He comes into this game with a high 5.37 ERA (5.51 SIERA) and has virtually no upside with a 15.6% strikeout rate. He now has to face the Blue Jays offense that ranks sixth in wOBA and fourth in ISO against right-handed pitchers. Avoid him today.

Happ has had a solid year for the Blue Jays. He sports a 3.27 ERA this year, which he has kept up even despite moving to a more hitter-friendly home ballpark (3.22 ERA at home in ten starts). His SIERA (4.31) does sit a full run higher than his ERA on the year, indicating some regression should be in order, and he has to face an Orioles offense with a lot of lefty mashers, but who, even so, are ranked in the bottom of the league (26th) in wOBA against RHP. The early slate lacks a real second option, putting Happ in play, albeit with some risk.
Batter Grind Down
Baltimore
Happ has held batters from both sides of the plate to a wOBA under .302 for the year. Vegas believes in him a bit today, as the Orioles have a run total of 4.32, for 13th-highest on the slate. You can make a case for a couple of the righties hitting high up in the order today, but the offense on the other side is the one to target.

Miley is not a pitcher to target on a regular basis. He has an ERA of 5.23 and has a very low 16.4% strikeout rate. His matchup today is terrible, as his run support should be limited with Arrieta taking the hill for the Cubs, and the Cubs are ranked second in wOBA and third in ISO against lefties. The Cubs are the largest favorite on the entire day, making Miley a hard pitcher to play today.

Just when Cub fans thought Arrieta was back after his start against the Mets, he goes and gives up four earned to the White Sox. His ERA has risen over a run in the last ten starts, getting closer to his SIERA of 3.58. He still has great strikeout stuff (26.2% K rate), making him a high-upside play in any matchup. He faces a Mariners squad that is ranked in the top ten in many of the offensive categories listed, yet Arrieta is still the top play of the early slate and you could make the case for his being best option of the entire day.

first start did not go as well as many had hoped, as he allowed six earned runs in 4.2 innings to the Dodgers. He’ll try to bounce back in a decent matchup against the Giants, who are ranked 16th in wOBA and 26th in ISO against right-handed pitching. While the earned runs made his first start a bit lackluster, the strikeout potential was clearly shown, as he K’d nine batters in only 14 outs. His price today makes him playable, especially at DraftKings, where he is $4700 on a slate that really lacks safe second options.

Eovaldi has had two solid starts in a row now and comes into the game with a 4.80 ERA (4.25 SIERA) to go along with a below-average 18.7% strikeout rate. He has a decent matchup today against the Rays, who are ranked 26th in wOBA and ninth in ISO against right-handed pitching. Eovaldi’s low upside makes him a tough play today, even with the solid matchup.

Smyly finally snapped out of a stretch of starts that launched his ERA up about two runs since the end of May. He still does have a respectable SIERA of 3.94 on the year to go along with a solid 23.5% strikeout rate. He gets a good matchup today against the Yankees, who rank in the back end of the league against left-handed pitching. He also gets to pitch at home, where his ERA is nearly a full run lower than his ERA on the road (4.88/5.83). He is the second-best option on the day, but none of the second options on the early slate would be exactly safe.
Batter Grind Down
NY Yankees
The Yankees are a terrible offense against left-handed pitching, as they have put together a lefty-based offense and righties like Rodriguez have struggled. They have a low projected team total of 3.85 today, which is the seventh-lowest total of the day. They are not the greatest offense to target on the early slate.

The Rays are small favorites in this game today as they take on Eovaldi and have a projected team total of 4.15, which is right in the middle of the league totals today. Eovaldi has really struggled against lefties this year, as he has allowed a .373 wOBA.

Fiers comes into this game with a 4.69 ERA (4.51 SIERA) on the season. He is an easy avoid in DFS this year, as his strikeout rate is down significantly from where is was a year ago and now sits at a terrible 15.9%. He has a tough matchup against a Tigers squad that went for 14 runs last night and is ranked in the top ten in both wOBA and ISO against righties. Avoid Fiers tonight.

Verlander has continued to roll along this year and is riding a nice five-game stretch where he has not allowed more than two earned runs. He now holds a solid 3.69 SIERA on the season, but more importantly, his above average strikeout rate of 25.7% makes him playable in most matchups. Today, he is a boom or bust play, as the Astros are ranked in the top ten against righties but also strike out at a very high 23.9% clip. He is a great option on the night slate.

Houston
Verlander has been great this year, as he has kept batters to a wOBA of under .294 from both sides of the plate. The Astros have a projected team total of 4.04, which is in the bottom third of the league today. They have some upside, but it is tough to pay the prices for the big Astros bats.

Fiers has allowed a wOBA of over .323 from both sides of the plate and has also had some reverse splits, as he has allowed a wOBA of .372 to righties on the year. This bodes well for the Tigers offense that has the tenth-highest total of the day.
