Kuhl has had an average rookie season as he comes into this game with a 4.52 SIERA and low 17.3% strikeout rate. He has a difficult matchup today against the Cardinals who are ranked fifth in wOBA and second in ISO against right handed pitching on the year. Due to the matchup, Kuhl is a difficult play today.

Wacha gets the start today as he is coming off a seven earned run start in his last time out against the Reds. This is a big game for the Cardinals so if he struggles again he will likely get removed immediately. The short leash is a bit risky for Wacha as he has not exactly pitched great recently. With that said, he is cheap and a heavy favorite today putting him in play, but with risk attached.
Batter Grind Down
Pittsburgh
The Pirates have a very low projected run total of just 3.59 runs, which is the second lowest total of the entire day. Wacha has struggled recently, but Vegas believes in the Cardinals team as a whole today, making the Pirates offense a tough play.

Kuhl has struggled against lefties (.364 wOBA allowed), while he has shut down right handed bats (.288 wOBA allowed). This bodes well for a number of lefty Cardinal bats as they have a 4.41 projected run total today. Look for lineups today and attack the lefties.

I saw a blurb the other day about opening day starters for the Mets and how Colon has been the healthiest of the bunch, who would have guessed. The 43-year-old has had a solid season for New York as he comes in with a 3.42 ERA (4.43 SIERA). His strikeout rate of just 15.8% make him a very low upside play today even in a decent matchup against the Phillies. Colon has pitched well against them this year (2.92 ERA in 24.2 innings), making him a decent SP2 in all formats and a possible cheap SP1 as he should be in line for the win today.

These last couple days of the season you are going to see a number of pitchers we haven’t seen a whole lot of this year. Klein has only made one start (early August) and 10 other appearances out of the bullpen this year. He has been awful as he comes in with a 8.22 ERA, yet his 4.18 SIERA show some improvements should be made. He does come in with a respectable 22.8% strikeout rate, yet he is not going to pitch too deep into the game to make him worth any risk.

NY Mets
Klein has been crushed for a wOBA of .374+ from both sides of the plate this year. This Mets offense looks to be one of the better ones of the day as they have the fifth highest total (4.79 runs) in this great matchup today.

If you want to attack old man Colon is should be from the left side of the plate. On the year, he has held righties to a .289 wOBA, but lefties have gotten to him for a .334 wOBA. The Phillies have the sixth lowest projected total, making them an easy avoid today.

Miley was terrible in his first number of starts since coming over from Seattle (7.55 ERA). He has been much improved over his last two starts, as he has allowed just one earned run over 12.2 innings. He will look to keep that momentum going as he takes on a New York squad that is below average against left-handed pitching this year. His low strikeout rate of 18.7 percent makes him a low-upside play, but pitching as a whole looks awful, so you are going to have to take a chance somewhere. Still, I am not sure Miley is where we want to take that chance.

Severino takes the start today instead of the expected Tanaka. Severino has been out of the bullpen mainly over the last month, which means he has pitched a maximum of 67 pitches since early August. This alone makes him a tough play, but combine that with the fact that the Orioles are a top-three offense against righties, and you can simply move on from Severino.
Batter Grind Down
Baltimore
The Orioles have the ninth-highest projected total of the day, as they get a solid matchup against Severino and likely a lot of Yankee bullpen arms. Severino has allowed a .319 wOBA to lefties and .360 wOBA to righties, making the Orioles solid targets in all formats.

Miley should be attacked from the right side of the plate, as he has allowed a .355 wOBA to right handed batters this year. This bodes well for guys like Gary Sanchez and Starlin Castro, but that is about it as the Yankees have the 20th-highest projected total today.

Kershaw will make his final regular season start today, as the Dodgers look to roll into the postseason. He has been solid since his return from the back injury ,as he has put up a 0.86 ERA and 23 strikeouts in just 21 innings. He will look to continue that momentum today against the Giants, who he has dominated this year (1.86 ERA, 31 strikeouts in 29 innings). While he may not go complete today, he is still the best pitcher going and should be used in all formats.

Suarez has now made 22 appearances and 12 starts on the year. He holds a 4.26 ERA (4.65 SIERA) and a very low 15.2 percent strikeout rate. He has little upside and has a tough matchup against the Dodgers, who are ranked fifth in wOBA and seventh in ISO. Avoid him against Kershaw today.

LA Dodgers
The Dodgers have a low team total of just 4.33, which is the 21st-projected team total of the day. Suarez has allowed a .324 wOBA to lefties and .352 wOBA to righties on the year, which puts value plays for the Dodgers into play today. As a whole, though, they are not a stack-worthy offense on the slate.

Chen has had a tough year, as he sports a 5.02 ERA (4.18 SIERA) and a below average 19 percent strikeout rate. He gets a tough matchup against the Nationals today, who are ranked fifth against left-handed pitching in wOBA and second in ISO against lefties as well. This makes Chen a tough play in all formats, yet he is the seventh-ranked pitcher on the day due to the options available being even worse than he is.

Roark has had a solid season overall this year. He comes in with a sub-three earned run average (2.86) and a playable 20.2 percent strikeout rate. His SIERA, like it has been all season, shows some regression, as it sits a full run higher than his ERA at 4.27. And yet, he gets a solid matchup against the Marlins who are ranked 24th in wOBA and 29th in ISO against righties. Roark is a solid option in all formats.

The Marlins have a projected run total of 3.96, which is the fifth-lowest team total of the day. Roark has allowed a wOBA of under .285 from both sides of the plate, which makes this Marlins offense one that we can safely ignore on the day.
