Eickhoff has been a decent pitcher this year, as he comes in with a 4.16 SIERA (3.86 ERA) with a 19.7% strikeout rate. Today is tough for him though, as he takes on a Nationals squad that is ranked 13th in wOBA, eighth in runs per game, and has to pitch against Scherzer who should limit his run support. There is not a whole lot to like about playing Eickhoff tonight.

Scherzer is an elite play every time he takes the mound. He holds the second-highest strikeout rate in the majors at 31.6% and a solid 3.04 SIERA to go along with it. He gets a great matchup against the Phillies, who are ranked 29th in wOBA (27th in last 30 days) and have a strikeout rate of 22.3% against righties. He is by far the top play of the night, but whether you can pay that salary (especially on DK) is the question.
Batter Grind Down
Philadelphia
There is not a whole lot that needs to be said. The Phillies get the toughest matchup tonight and have the lowest run total of the night at 2.72 runs. No reason to play them.

The left side of the plate is where you want to expose Eickhoff, as he has allowed a .343 wOBA to lefties on the year. This sets up nicely for the Nationals, as they have a couple of the best lefties in the league in Murphy and Harper. They have the sixth-highest projected run total and should put up a couple runs today.

While Ubaldo has a 6.19 ERA on the season and was a guy to pick on every time he took the mound, he has thrown three straight quality starts now and is coming off a complete game against the Rays. With that said, Vegas does not have a whole lot of faith in that continuing as he is a small underdog with a big time overall total of 9.5 runs. He is way to tough to trust and has limited upside today.

Zimmermann is making his first start in about a month and does not have a great matchup for it. The Orioles are ranked third in wOBA against righties and first in ISO. They have the 11th-highest run total of 4.60 on the day, making Zimmerman an easy wait and see type pitcher tonight.
Batter Grind Down
Baltimore
Zimmermann was a reverse-splits pitcher prior to getting hurt as he allowed a .355 wOBA to righties on the year. This sets up well for some of the power bats in the lineup and this should be a great game to target from both sides of the plate.

Ubaldo is much more attackable from the left side of the plate (.405 wOBA allowed) than the right (.317 wOBA allowed). This sets up slightly better for him against a righty-heavy offense, yet they still have the highest projected run total of the day at 4.90 runs.

Santiago’s time with the Twins has not been good, as he has allowed 26 earned runs now in his six starts during that span. He now holds a bad 4.92 SIERA on the season with a below average strikeout rate of 19.3%. While he did pitch well against this Indians squad not long ago, it is hard to see him repeating that against an Indians squad ranked fourth in runs per game. Both pitchers should be avoided.

Santiago has struggled to both lefties (.348 wOBA allowed) and righties (.334) on the year. The Indians come in with the third-highest ranked offense tonight and should be played in all formats.

Volquez is rarely someone you should have confidence in throwing out there in really any matchup. He comes in with a high 4.53 SIERA and a low 16.8% strikeout rate. While the matchup today isn’t terrible against the White Sox, who are a bottom third of the league offense, he is not playable tonight.

Shields will be a very popular man tonight for the wrong reasons. He is great to attack this year, as he has just been awful coming in with a 6.07 ERA (5.25 SIERA). He has now allowed 35 home runs in 28 starts this year (2.08 HR/9), which may allow even a non-HR hitting offense in the Royals to get a couple here tonight. Avoid in all formats.

Get the stack trains running against Shield today, as the Royals have the second-highest projected run total of the day at 4.86 runs. He has allowed a ridiculous .407 wOBA to righties on the year and .366 wOBA to lefties. Play the Royals as much as you can.

Rich Hill looked great in his last start as he went six scoreless innings and struck out eight. He has a ton of blue on his boxes above, his only problem is continuing to stay healthy. He has a solid matchup against the Marlins, who are ranked 22nd in wOBA and 26th in ISO against lefties. While Scherzer is the clear cut number one play tonight, Hill has the closest amount of upside on the slate.

Koehler is just an average to below average pitcher any time he takes the mound. He comes in with a SIERA that is almost a full run higher than his ERA at 4.77. His 18.8% strikeout rate does not allow for many mistakes.
