Peralta comes into tonight’s contest as a sizable underdog in a game that features a total of 8.5 runs. He has little upside in terms of strikeout potential, as he has only struck out 13% of the batters that he has faced in the last two seasons. He gives up a lot of hard contact (33%) and he gives up a decent number of home runs. With all of that in mind, he can be avoided in both cash games and GPPs.

Santana’s first start this season was cut short by a rain delay. In his last two starts, he has struck out 13 batters while allowing five runs over 13 innings of work. Santana may not have the highest strikeout rate in the majors (18.8%), but he does draw a great matchup against the Brewers, who are ranked 19th in team wOBA and 23rd in strikeout rate against right-handed pitching over the last two seasons. I wouldn’t look his way in the all-day slate, but he is in play in the early-only slate if you want to fade .

The Brewers’ offense has been less than impressive so far this season, averaging the seventh fewest runs per game. They don’t particularly hit right-handed pitching well, but they do draw a decent matchup against in an American League ballpark. The left-handed hitters in the Twins’ lineup have the advantage here, as Santana has allowed a .345 wOBA to hitters from that side of the plate.

The Twins’ offense has been even worst than the Brewers so far this season, but they come into today’s game with the third highest team total on the board. They draw a favorable matchup against at home. and company put up seven runs in last night’s rain shortened game and I expect another nice outing from them in this matchup. Miley has not fared well in his first two starts with the Mariners. He has given up 11 runs on 17 hits. While he has struck out 14 batters during that stretch, there is still cause for concern. He comes into today’s game as a sizable underdog against the Indians, who are ranked 13th in team wOBA and seventh in strikeout rate against left-handed pitching over the last two seasons. He boasts an elite strikeout rate (29.3%) with a very low SIERA (2.76). He draws a nice matchup against the Mariners, who have not fared well against right-handed pitching. He also has a good chance to pick up a win, as the offense behind him should be able to put up some runs against .

Verrett pitched well in his first start of the season and if you look at his numbers as a whole from the last two seasons, they are impressive. He owns a 3.88 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 21.2%. The main issue is that he doesn’t have that pitch upside that we like to look for. He generally maxes out at around 85-90 pitches, which limits his upside as a whole. That said, the combination of a cheap price tag and a nice matchup put him in play tonight as an SP2. The Phillies are ranked 29th in team wOBA and 21st in strikeout rate against right-handed pitching over the last two seasons.

How about the start that Velasquez has had to the season? He has been one of the lone bright spots on the Phillies. In his first two starts, he has pitched 15 innings, struck out 25 batters, and has yet to allow a single run. He was a top prospect coming into the majors and we are starting to see the upside that he possesses. He doesn’t draw a great matchup against the Mets, but it’s not one that we have to avoid either. Given his strikeout upside, he is a strong GPP play and a decent SP2 on multi-pitcher sites.

Pineda should be excited for tonight’s game against the A’s, after having to face the Blue Jays and Astros in his first two starts. Dollar for dollar, he is one of my favorite pitching options in tonight’s slate. While the A’s have a low strikeout rate, they have the seventh lowest team wOBA against right-handed pitching. Stroman continues to pitch well for the Blue Jays. He now owns a 3.51 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 15.9% and a ridiculous ground ball rate of 64.6%. He is going to need to keep the ball on the ground tonight if he is going to have success against this tough Orioles’ offense. While Stroman’s skill set allows him to succeed in any ballpark, there are safer pitching options on the board tonight. The one plus for Stroman is that he should see run support with pitching opposite him.

Wright is one of those pitchers that can typically just be glossed over. He owns a 5.15 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 13.3%. As I always say, anytime a pitcher has a K:BB ratio less than 2.0, that is a red flag. Wright is an easy pitcher to avoid in most matchups and since he’s facing the best offense in baseball, there is no reason for him to be on your radar tonight.

Projected Run Total — 4.48 (4 of 30)
The Blue Jays are a better offense at home, but they shouldn’t be overlooked tonight. They have the highest wOBA of any team in baseball against right-handed pitching and they come into tonight’s game with the fourth highest team total on the board. Hitters from both sides of the plate are in play, as has allowed a .399 wOBA to left-handed hitters and a .353 wOBA to right-handed hitters over the last two seasons.

The Orioles may have a higher team total than the average of the 30 teams in action tonight, but I’m not crazy about their matchup against . When pitchers are able to generate a lot of ground balls, they limit the hard contact against them. The Orioles score the bulk of their runs with the long ball and I just don’t see them hitting many home runs off of Stroman.
