We keep seeing these weird start times, which results in a lot of games not being included in the main slates. The Tigers and Indians first pitch is set for 6:10 ET. This game is included in the early-only slate on FanDuel, but DraftKings has left it out altogether. Verlander has pitched well in his first three starts of the season, posting a 3.73 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 25%. One of those starts came against this same Indians’ team. Verlander checks in as a small underdog and with this game being played in Cleveland, he’s not a pitcher that I am actively targeting tonight.

Tomlin’s strikeout rate may look low, but that was largely due to his one bad start against the Twins. We should trust the larger sample size here. In ten starts in 2015, he posted a 3.46 SIERA with a strikeout rate or 22.7%. He doesn’t walk many batters, although he does give up a fairly high hard hit contact rate of around 40%. He draws a decent matchup tonight against the Tigers, who are a potent but strikeout happy offense. I’m not looking to target either pitcher in this game, but would give the edge to Tomlin over Verlander.

The Tigers have been a mediocre offense against right-handed pitching. They come into tonight’s game with the 11th lowest team total on the board. They draw a mediocre matchup against , who has been very tough on left-handed hitters (.217 wOBA). Tomlin has struggled with right-handed bats though, allowing a .328 wOBA and ten home runs over his last 13 starts.

Arrieta is a monster. I’m convinced that he is not human. He is a massive pitcher that just hulks over his prey. In his first five starts of the season, he has a 3.25 SUERA with a strikeout rate just under 25%. He typically doesn’t walk many batters, yet he still generates a swinging strike rate of 11%. He also produces an elite ground ball rate. He basically checks every box that we are looking for from a pitcher. The fact that he is a -200 favorite on the road against a good Pirates’ ball club goes to show just how great Arrieta is. I have him ranked as my top overall pitcher tonight.

After three decent starts to open the season, Niese has allowed at least ten hits and at least four earned runs in each of his last two. His velocity is low and he doesn’t generate a high swinging strike rate. That could pose problems for a Cubs’ offense that makes great contact when they put the ball into play. Niese may be cheap, but the risk greatly outweighs the potential reward tonight, even though the game is at home in the pitcher-friendly PNC Park.

The Pirates draw the worst pitching matchup on the schedule tonight. They have the second lowest team total on the board, as they square off against at home. Severino still has an impressive SIERA, but his strikeout rate has been way down this season. He still has similar velocity (95 MPH fastball), but his swinging strike rate is down. It could be thanks to a small sample size or it could be due to the fact that teams are making adjustments against him at the plate. While the Orioles do strike out at a high clip, they are also a top five offense against right-handed pitching. For now, continue to avoid Severino in all league formats.

Tillman is one of those pitchers that just doesn’t do it for me. His numbers look good so far in his first five starts of the year, but I’m not sure that his swinging strike rate of 11.8% is sustainable. His previous career high was 8.3% back in 2012. Tillman draws a difficult matchup tonight against the Yankees, who are ranked fifth in team ISO against right-handed pitching over the last two seasons.

Do you know what a major red flag for a pitcher is? When his walk rate (12.2%) is higher than his strikeout rate (11.4%). In five starts this season, Perez has a 5.42 SIERA. While he doesn’t give up a lot of hard contact, eventually those balls put into play are going to find holes in the infield and gaps in the outfield. The Blue Jays offense has really struggled to get going this season, but Perez may be the cure for that. Even with their recent skid, the Blue Jays are still ranked first in team wOBA against left-handed pitching over the last two seasons.

Estrada has shown some nice upside so far this season, striking out over 24% of the batters that he has faced. A closer examination reveals that it may not be sustainable though, as his velocity hasn’t changed and he is actually generating a lower swinging strike rate. Perhaps it could be thanks to a new pitch in his repertoire though. He has thrown a cutter on 15% of his pitches this season and so far it appears to be working. Estrada could be a cheap source for a win tonight (thanks to a ton of run support), but I don’t love the matchup against the Rangers.

The Rangers are a mediocre offense to target tonight. They see a nice ballpark boost playing in the Rogers Centre, but has held both left and right-handed hitters under a .285 wOBA in the last two seasons. The one positive for hitters is that Estrada is a fly-ball pitcher that has allowed 25 home runs in his last 32 starts.

The Blue Jays are the creme of the crop tonight. They are the belle of the ball. They are the Kung Pao Chicken of Chinese food (this one may be a bit subjective). Ignore their recent struggles and jump on the bandwagon tonight. has one of the lowest strikeout rates of any pitcher in baseball. He has allowed a .343 wOBA to right-handed hitters over the last two seasons. Meanwhile, the Blue Jays are ranked first in both team wOBA and team ISO during that same time period. Do whatever you can to get as many Jays in your lineup as possible.

Corbin is one of those pitchers that can make a great fantasy option when the matchup is right. Basically, when he has the platoon advantage, he deserves to be on your radar. Over the last two seasons, he has held left-handed hitters to a .257 wOBA with a 28.9% strikeout rate. He doesn’t fare nearly as well against right-handed hitters though. With all of the right-handed bats in the Marlins’ lineup, I will be avoiding Corbin in all league formats.

Nicolino pitched seven shutout innings against the Dodgers in his first start of the season. While that outing was impressive, there is still one major issue – his strikeout rate. In his first 13 major league starts, Nicolino has a SIERA over 5.00 with a strikeout rate under 8%. Basically, he is striking out one in every 12 hitters that he faces. He needs a near perfect outing to reach value and I’m not sure that will happen tonight against the Diamondbacks.

I always like to see pitcher’s with drastic splits because it makes our job very easy. Over the last two seasons, has allowed a .352 wOBA and 14 home runs to right-handed hitters. Do you want to hear a statistic that is absolutely mind-blowing? Over the last two seasons, has an ISO (.536) that is higher than his wOBA (.480). He may be the top hitter on the board tonight.
