Koch has made five appearances out of the bullpen, but he will draw his first major league start tonight. In seven starts at the Triple-A level this season, he posted a 3.09 ERA with a strikeout rate of 12.9%. If he could only strikeout 13% of hitters in the minor leagues, that is a major red flag for his fantasy appeal in the majors. He is the largest underdog in the entire slate and he should be avoided in both cash games and tournaments.

Scherzer is dominant at home and on the road. In 32 starts this season, he has a 3.05 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 31.4%. He should mow through this Diamondbacks’ offense that is much better at home and much better against left-handed pitching. On the season, they are ranked below the major league average in team wOBA, team ISO, and team K% against right-handed pitching. No offense to Chris Sale, but Mad Max is the ace that I want in my lineup tonight.
Batter Grind Down
Arizona
The Diamondbacks have the lowest implied team total in the slate. It should come as no surprise, as they have to face one of the best pitchers in baseball and they are playing in a pitcher-friendly ballpark. In 2016, Max Scherzer has held both left and right-handed hitters under a .315 wOBA.

The Nationals come into tonight’s game with one of the highest implied team totals in the slate. They draw a favorable matchup against rookie Matt Koch, who is making his first career major league start. As I mentioned above, Koch is a low strikeout pitcher that could get knocked around by the Nationals.

Price has been dominant in his last five starts, posting a 3.26 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 26.5%. He draws a decent matchup against the Yankees, who have not hit left-handed pitching well as a team this season. New York has had some success against Price in his career, but a lot of the damage against him came in only a few outings. He has as much upside as any pitcher not-named Scherzer or Sale tonight.

Cessa has not fared well in his first seven major league starts, posting a 4.51 SIERA with a strikeout rate of only 15.8%. He has been an easy fade in daily fantasy and that trend will continue tonight, as the Yankees host the Red Sox. Cessa is a large underdog in this matchup. On the season, the Red Sox are ranked first in team wOBA and fifth in team ISO against right-handed pitching.

Boston
The Red Sox may not be playing at home tonight, but it shouldn’t matter. Their offense should continue to roll in a matchup against Luis Cessa, who has allowed a .335 wOBA to left-handed hitters and a .324 wOBA to right-handed hitters this season. A Red Sox stack is in play in all league formats.

NY Yankees
The Yankees have not hit left-handed pitching well this season, ranking 24th in team wOBA and 26th in team ISO. To make matters worse, they have to face David Price, who has held both left and right-handed hitters under a .315 wOBA this season. Gary Sanchez is always in play as a one-off target, but the rest of the Yankees can be avoided tonight.

Lackey is having another strong season for the Cubs, posting a 3.78 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 24.4%. Joe Maddon has limited his pitcher’s innings over the last month or so, but Lackey should still see at least six innings if he is pitching well tonight. He draws a decent matchup against the Pirates, who are ranked 16th in team wOBA against right-handed pitching. Lackey isn’t a bad play by any means, but there are so many great pitching options that I will have very little (if any) exposure to him.

Vogelsong has some drastic home/road splits in the last two seasons. At home, he has a 3.74 ERA with a strikeout rate of 18.6% and a wOBA allowed of .310. On the road, it’s another story entirely. Even though he is pitching at home tonight, the matchup is too scary to even consider rostering Vogelsong. The Cubs are ranked ninth in team wOBA against right-handed pitching this season.

Chicago Cubs
The Cubs may not be playing in the most hitter-friendly ballpark, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t target their hitters in a favorable matchup against Ryan Vogelsong. On the season, he has allowed a .396 wOBA and six home runs to left-handed hitters.

The Pirates haven’t been great offensively this season, but they do have the sixth highest team wOBA over the last month of play. They come into tonight’s game with the sixth lowest run projection in the slate. John Lackey has been tough on left and right-handed hitters this season, holding both under a .305 wOBA.

Gausman is another pitcher with drastic home/road splits. In the last two seasons on the road, he has a 5.06 ERA with a wOBA allowed of .345. To make matters worse, he is a reverse-splits pitcher that has to face a Blue Jays’ offense that is loaded with right-handed power hitters. There is more risk than upside in this matchup and we can avoid Gausman in both cash games and GPPs.

Sanchez has not been in good form recently, posting a 5.73 ERA with a strikeout rate of only 13.1% in his last four starts. His command has been a bit off and he hasn’t been able to induce that elite ground ball rate that makes him so effective. Until he can flash some form, I will continue to avoid him in DFS. With all of the great pitching options on the mound tonight, Sanchez is an easy fade against the Orioles.

The Orioles are one of the best offenses in baseball against right-handed pitching. Their implied team total seems a bit low to me, as they are facing a struggling pitcher in a hitter-friendly ballpark. The low total should lead to low ownership, which makes them an intriguing stack in tournaments.

The Blue Jays let us down last night and they have a chance to do it again tonight. They come into the game with the eighth highest implied team total on the board. Clevinger’s numbers in his last four starts look good on paper – 2.87 ERA with a strikeout rate of 23.4%. Those numbers don’t include the fact that he has walked over 10% of the hitters that he has faced and that he didn’t throw more than 85 pitches in any single outing during that stretch. As a large underdog on the road, Clevinger is an easy fade tonight. The Tigers are ranked seventh in team wOBA against right-handed pitching this season.

Verlander has been tremendous all season, but he is coming off of his best five-game stretch of the year. In those five starts, he had a 2.93 ERA with a strikeout rate of 34.2%. He is as locked in as any pitcher in baseball right now. If it weren’t for the matchup, he would be considered right up there with Max Scherzer and Chris Sale as the top pitching option in the slate. The one caveat here is that the Indians clinched their division last night. If they decide to rest their typical starters, Verlander would become an elite play in all formats.

The Indians beat the Tigers last night and clinched their division. They could end up partying tonight, but they could also be all business. They are only a game behind the Red Sox in the loss column and still have a chance to be the number one seed in the American League. Regardless of what their lineup looks like tonight, we should avoid their hitters against Justin Verlander.

The Tigers come into tonight’s game with the third highest implied team total in the slate. With six games to play, they are two behind the Orioles for the final wildcard spot in the American League. They basically can’t afford to lose another game. They draw an excellent matchup tonight against Mike Clevinger, who has allowed a .378 wOBA to right-handed hitters this season.
