Koehler has been one of the top pitchers to pick on this season. In his seven starts, he has a 5.22 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 17% and a walk rate of 12.6%. He has a low swinging strike rate and he gives up a fairly high hard hit contact rate. The good news is that he draws a favorable matchup against the Phillies, who are ranked 28th in team wOBA (.290) against right-handed pitching. I wouldn’t consider Koehler in the all-day slate, but he offers decent value in the early-only slate that features the four daytime games.

Hellickson continues to pitch well for the Phillies, posting a 3.49 SIERA with a 24.9% strikeout rate in his first eight starts of the season. Even though he is a small underdog against the Marlins, I actually prefer him over his pitching counterpart, Tom Koehler. Hellickson has better upside and he comes into the game in much better form. His matchup against Miami is less than ideal though, as they are ranked eighth in team wOBA and fifth in team strikeout rate against right-handed pitching this season.
Batter Grind Down
Miami
The Marlins have a mediocre team total of 4.06 runs today. While they do hit right-handed pitching well as a team, they are facing Jeremy Hellickson, who has really pitched well this season. You can certainly look to the Marlins in the early-only slate, but there are better options in the all-day slate. Over the last two seasons, Hellickson has allowed a .345 wOBA to left-handed hitters and a .330 wOBA to right-handed hitters.

The Phillies have one of the worst offenses in all of baseball, but they draw a favorable matchup today against Tom Koehler. In addition to a high walk rate, Koehler has allowed a .342 wOBA to left-handed hitters and a .313 wOBA to right-handed hitters over the last two seasons. Koehler has also given up 25 home runs in his last 38 starts.

Nolasco has pitched better than most of us expected so far this season, but he’s a hard pitcher to trust in DFS. If you look at his splits, he has allowed a .336+ wOBA to hitters from both sides of the plate over the last two seasons. He draws a difficult matchup today against the Tigers, who are a top ten offense against right-handed pitching. Nolasco is a large underdog on the road and the Tigers have the third highest team total on the board. The risk outweighs the potential reward here.

Verlander grades out as the second best pitching option in the early-only slate. He has shown good form this season, posting a 3.81 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 24.4% and a swinging strike rate over 10%. He has struggled with the long ball, but his 13.1% home run per fly ball rate is unsustainable when you look at his career averages. Verlander is a large favorite today against the Twins, who have the eighth highest strikeout rate against right-handed pitching this season. He should have the platoon advantage over Minnesota, but that may not be a good thing since Verlander has reverse splits.

Minnesota
The Twins are not an offense to target in cash games, but you can certainly look their way in tournaments. As I mentioned above, Justin Verlander has allowed a much higher wOBA to right-handed hitters (.310) than he has to left-handed hitters (.269). Eduardo Nunez, Miguel Sano, and Byung Ho Park all hit from the right side of the plate and they all have a .366+ wOBA against right-handed pitching.

Wright is always an intriguing option in DFS for two reasons:
1. He has a strikeout rate above 20%.
2. He pitches deep into games – averaging 107.8 pitches per start this season.
If you look solely at his SIERA and his walk rate, Wright wouldn’t stand out as a great fantasy option, but he is averaging 38 fantasy points per game on FanDuel this season (27 on DraftKings). He may give up a few runs in the process, but he is going to strike batters out along the way and he will typically give you at least six innings. I don’t love the matchup or the price point for Wright today, but keep what I said above in mind the next time he takes the mound.

Kennedy has pitched fairly well this season, posting a 4.14 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 23%. His biggest problem over the last few seasons has been allowing too many home runs, but a lot of that is negated when he pitches in Kauffman Stadium. He makes an interesting GPP play today against the Red Sox. I don’t ever consider pitchers against Boston for cash games, but Kennedy is a sneaky GPP option at his price point.

The Red Sox streak of 11+ hits came to an end last night, but it’s still safe to say that their offense is in the midst of a hot streak. They average more runs per game than any team in the majors this season. They come into today’s game with a slightly below-average team total of 3.94 runs. While I don’t love the ballpark, Ian Kennedy has allowed 37 home runs in his last 37 starts.

The Royals are small favorites today against Steven Wright and the Red Sox. They have the 12th highest team total on the board. Over the course of the last two seasons, Wright has held both left and right-handed hitters under a .305 wOBA. Perez is one of the least appealing fantasy options in all of baseball. Through eight starts, he has a 5.24 SIERA with a walk rate (13.3%) that is nearly as high as his strikeout rate (14.3%). He gives up a lot of hard contact and he comes into this game as a sizable underdog on the road. Of the 30 pitchers taking the mound tonight, Perez has the lowest rating. He should be avoided in all league formats.

Hill hasn’t been as sharp in his last couple of starts, but he still owns a 3.54 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 28.7% this season. If you are playing in the early-only slate, it really comes down to two options for cash games – Hill and Verlander. Hill’s matchup against the Rangers is mediocre at best, as they are ranked tenth in team wOBA and 19th in team ISO against left-handed pitching. The upside is certainly there for Hill and it doesn’t hurt that he is pitching at home in the pitcher-friendly O.co Coliseum.

The Rangers have the seventh lowest team total on the board. They aren’t a terrible offense against left-handed pitching, but they draw a difficult matchup against Rich Hill, who has held both left and right-handed hitters under a .260 wOBA in his last 12 starts. Adrian Beltre is worth a look here, but the rest of the Rangers’ lineup can be avoided in this difficult matchup.

The A’s have had two players hit three home runs in a single game in the last three days. Danny Valencia accomplished the task on Sunday and Khris Davis did the same last night. They draw a great matchup today against Martin Perez, who has one of the lowest strikeout rates of any starter in baseball. All of the right-handed bats in the A’s lineup are in play at home.

There are very few times during the season when I actively target Teheran. The matchup has to be favorable and he has to be pitching at home. He has struggled on the road throughout his career. He draws a difficult matchup against the Pirates, who are ranked fifth in team wOBA against right-handed pitching this season. Teheran should be avoided in both cash games and GPPs.

Liriano is the top ranked pitching option on the board this evening. He hasn’t had a spectacular season thus far, but he appears to be trending in the right direction. He always boasts an elite strikeout rate, he has just been walking a few more batters than normal this season. He may draw the best possible matchup for a pitcher, as the Braves are ranked 28th or worse in team wOBA, team ISO, and team strikeout rate against left-handed pitching this season. There are some other decent options tonight, but I have a hard time going away from Liriano in cash games.

Atlanta
The Braves have the worst offense in baseball. They also draw the toughest matchup on the board tonight. It should come as no surprise that they have the lowest team total on the board. Atlanta’s bats should be avoided against Francisco Liriano, who has held both left and right-handed hitters under a .305 wOBA over the last two seasons.

The Pirates have a better matchup than their team total suggests. They are only projected to score 4.02 runs, which is right around the average of the 30 teams in action tonight.
