Despite being outshot 47-21, the Flyers were able to hang on and defeat the Boston Bruins in a shootout on Tuesday. Tonight, they’ll head to Ottawa looking for just their second three-game winning streak of the season and aiming to avenge a shootout loss to the Senators in their only previous meeting this season. In what would be a small surprise to many, Wayne Simmonds actually leads the Flyers with 22 points (11 goals and 11 assists) in 24 games and is strong play tonight along with linemates Travis Konecny and Brayden Schenn. However, it’s the duo of Claude Giroux and Jakub Voracek that will likely be a bit more popular. Both Voracek and Giroux trail just behind Simmonds with 20 points a piece and they join forces both on the top forward line (with Michael Raffl) as well as the #1 power-play unit. On defense, Shayne Gostisbehere seems to have it a bit of a “sophomore slump” and just wrapped up a month of November that saw him tally just two goals and two assists in 13 games. Alternatively, Ivan Provorov continues to grow acclimated to life in the NHL and he’s now seen north of 20 minutes of ice-time in each of the last eight games. He posted some very impressive offensive numbers the last two seasons in the WHL and continues to see a healthy dose of playing time as the point man on the #2 power-play unit.

The Ottawa Senators will take the ice tonight without their usual netminder as Craig Anderson has taken a leave of absence to be with his wife while she undergoes cancer treatment. Needless to say, it’ll be an emotional evening for Anderson’s Ottawa teammates and I’m expecting a motivated performance from them tonight. They saw their four game winning streak snapped on Thursday night against Buffalo, but did show plenty of heart by fighting back from a 3-1 deficit and seemingly just running out of time as they dropped a 5-4 decision. Despite the loss, Ottawa sits alone in second place of the Atlantic Division and can really use two points tonight as their schedule takes a rather ugly turn for the month of December. When targeting the Senators, Erik Karlsson has to be at the top of your list. The two-time Norris Trophy winner dished out a pair of assists on Tuesday and now owns two goals and 12 assists in 14 games at the Scotiabank Place. Throw in the fact that he leads the entire NHL in blocked shots, and you have one of the safest cash game plays on the board tonight. Up-front, Ottawa hasn’t seen the type of offensive production they were hoping for thus far, but they still possess two very strong scoring lines. Mike Hoffman is arguably the most offensively gifted forward on this team and he showed off his upside with a hat trick (and an assist) in Tuesday’s loss to Buffalo. He’s now tallied four goals and five assists over the last five games and joins forces with Derick Brassard and Mark Stone on the top forward line. The talented Kyle Turris has the luxury of centering the team’s #1 power-play unit and that solidifies him as a fine target thanks to Philadelphia’s lackluster 80.8% penalty kill. Bobby Ryan will not suit up this evening.

The Steven Stamkos injury was obviously a major blow to this Tampa Bay team and his absence can seen in their recent results. Tampa Bay was easily dismissed by the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday night and have now been outscored 14-5 during the current three game losing streak. With that said, this Tampa team made a deep run into the Stanley Cup Playoffs without Stamkos last season and are still a very big threat in the Eastern Conference. With Stamkos gone, the weight of the scoring falls heavily on Nikita Kucherov and he’s been more than happy to oblige this season; posting 11 goals and 15 assists in just 23 games this season. He’s slated to be joined by Ondrej Palat and Tyler Johnson on Tampa’s top forward line and all three players also see a healthy dose of playing time with the man advantage. Jonathan Drouin has had a dicey start to his career in Tampa, but he showed off his offensive talents throughout the postseason last year and John Cooper will need him to pick up some of the scoring slack. On defense, Victor Hedman remains the top fantasy option, but Tampa Bay is very hopeful to get Anton Stralman back in the mix tonight after missing nearly three weeks with an upper body injury. He should help jump start their struggling power-play, but just keep your expectations in check as the Blues own an impressive 87.6% penalty kill.

After thoroughly outplaying the Dallas Stars on Monday night, it took a Vladimir Tarasenko overtime goal to secure two points for St. Louis. It was their second straight win and they now look to be headed in the right direction after a slow start as they’ve gone 6-1-0 in their last seven games and averaged 3.58 goals per game during the process. They’ll face a stiff test from their former teammate Ben Bishop and the Tampa Bay Lightning, but it’s hard to overlook their recent hot streak. Ken Hitchcock is hoping to have Alex Steen back in the lineup for tonight’s game, but unless some more news breaks, I’ll be operating under the impression that he’ll remain in the press box. Even in his absence, St. Louis has terrific forward depth and each of their top two lines have been rolling lately. Obviously, Vladimir Tarasenko draws the most headlines and leads the team with 23 points in 23 games this season. The young Robby Fabbri looked very dangerous all evening on Monday and both he and Jori Lehtera join Tarasenko on the top forward line and number one power-play unit. Alternatively, the trio of Jaden Schwartz, Paul Stastny and David Perron have also been buzzing in the offensive end. Perron potted his seventh goal of the season on Monday and is now riding an eight game point streak (three goals and eight assists in that span). On defense, things are pretty straight forward as Kevin Shattenkirk, Alex Pietrangelo and Colton Parayko are easily the top options and soak up nearly all of the available playing time on the point of the power-play units.

In a clash between two of the premier young players in the game, Connor McDavid Oilers came up short on Tuesday night against Austin Matthews and the Toronto Maple Leafs. Edmonton started the season on a 7-1-0 tear, but Wednesday was their third straight loss and they’ve posted a 5-9-2 record in 16 games since that hot start. Despite the recent rough patch, the Oilers still have a ton of offensive firepower and they rolled to a 3-0 victory over this Winnipeg game in their only previous meeting this season. Edmonton’s recent struggles simply can’t be blamed on Connor McDavid as he scored a highlight real goal in Tuesday’s game and rode his current six game point streak to a sizeable lead in the NHL scoring race (31 points in 24 games). Meanwhile, Milan Lucic is thriving alongside McDavid and now has a five-game scoring streak of his own. Todd McLellan recently shuffled up his lines a bit and the big winner of that change was Leon Draisaitl as he’s now slated to join McDavid and Lucic on that top forward line. This leaves Jordan Eberle and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (with Benoit Pouliot) responsible for providing some secondary scoring relief on second forward line. On defense, Oscar Klefbom and Andrej Sekera soak up nearly all of the available minutes on the power-play and will look to take advantage of Winnipeg’s mediocre 80.4% penalty kill.

The Jets snapped out of a five game losing streak and have now won each of their last two games. They’ll look to keep things rolling as the Edmonton Oilers limp their way into the MTS Centre in a game that should be a decent source for fantasy goodness. Winnipeg saw Bryan Little and Drew Stafford both draw back into the lineup earlier this week and they now find themselves with plenty of forward depth. Mark Scheifele scored a goal and added an assist and has really taken a big step forward this season. The former first-round pick posted an impressive (and career high) 61 points last season but looks poised to blow that mark out of the water as he’s already tallied 13 goals and 13 assists in 26 games. He’ll be joined by the very talented young duo of Patrik Laine and Nikolaj Ehlers and that group should be entertaining to watch all season long. With Edmonton lacking any true “shut down” defenders, they’re all terrific targets this evening. Blake Wheeler has taken the proverbial back seat this season to some degree, but he’s still extremely dangerous and should step right back into a rhythm on the second line alongside Little and Stafford. Dustin Byfuglien climbs way up my defensive rankings this evening given the fine matchup. He’s one of the most offensively aggressive defensemen in the NHL and unloaded 18 shots on goal in the three meetings against Edmonton last season.

The Devils have looked more offensively capable in years past recently, but that hasn’t really changed their results as they’ve now dropped six of their last seven games. They’ll continue on with their four game road trip with the unpleasant task of battling the Chicago Blackhawks at the Madhouse on Madison. Now they’re not a team I’d want to heavily target in this matchup, but rumors out of Devils camp is that Taylor Hall will finally make his return after missing three weeks with a knee injury. Also good news for the Devils is that Jonathan Toews will likely be watching from the press-box once again this evening. Removing his pestering defense obviously improves this matchup for New Jersey, but Chicago is 9-1-2 at the United Center for a reason and there are far more appealing options on the board this evening to dig too deep here. Taylor Hall is always a fine option (if he plays) and the likes of Michael Cammalleri, Travis Zajac and Kyle Palmieri are fine GPP targets, but I’ll likely be looking elsewhere.

The Blackhawks defeated the Florida Panthers in a shootout on Tuesday night and will take the ice tonight sitting in first place in the Western Conference with a record of 15-6-3. They’ll likely be without their Captain Jonathan Toews this evening and it’s important not to overlook the significance of his absence. They’re still heavy favorites by Vegas standards and I will likely want some exposure here, but I will caution you not too get too carried away. Chicago is somewhat surprisingly one of the slowest paced teams in the NHL this season (105.8 CP60) and New Jersey likely knows their best chance at picking up two points clog up the neutral zone and try to grind their way to a victory. With that said, Patrick Kane doesn’t know how to play at a slow pace and you can rest assured that he and linemates Artemi Panarin and Artem Anisimov will doing all they can to pick up the slack with Toews sidelined. All three players have already reached the 20 point plateau this season and are the top targets here this evening. On defense, both Brent Seabrook and Duncan Keith have been rock solid options all season. They share the duties on the point of Chicago’s #1 power-play unit and log significant minutes of ice-time on a nightly basis.

The Blue Jackets picked up a statement 5-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning and look poised to finally avoid putting themselves into an enormous early season hole as they’ve done in each of the past two seasons. They’re now 10-2-3 over their last 15 games and find themselves right in the thick of things in the Metropolitan Division. Their early season success can largely be attributed to three things; 1) Excellent goaltending, 2) More stability on defense, and 3) a fairly balanced scoring attack. Nick Foligno resurgence (eight goals and 11 assists in 21 games) was much needed and he’ll join Alexander Wennberg and Brandon Saad on the top line. Meanwhile, Cam Atkinson sits tied with Wennberg for the team lead in points (20) and headlines a very dangerous “second” line alongside Boone Jenner and Brandon Dubinsky. With Colorado allowing 2.95 goals against per game this season and owning an ugly 78.3% penalty kill, all six forwards are fine options this evening. On defense, Zach Werenski and Seth Jones are the two players that require your attention. Both player soak up nearly all of the available playing time on the point of the Columbus power-play and look poised beyond their years with the puck on their stick.

Colorado has dropped three straight games and just look destined to remain in last place of the Central Division all season. They’ve averaged just 2.24 goals per game this season and can’t seem to get all of their key offensive weapons all into the lineup at the same time (Gabriel Landeskog is unlikely to suit up tonight). They’ll face a Columbus team that has garnered a reputation for some poor defense over the past several seasons, but that just isn’t the case this time around as they’ve surrendered just 2.24 goals against per game and Sergei Bobrovsky has had a Vezina caliber start to the season (2.09 GAA and .930 SV%). With that said, both Nathan MacKinnon and Matt Duchene are simply too talented to ignore this evening. MacKinnon leads the Avs with 15 points in 21 games while Duchene potted the overtime game-winner in the only previous meeting between these two teams this season. On defense, Colorado has several fantasy relevant options. Tyson Barrie and Erik Johnson are the most offensively gifted and see plenty of playing time on the power-play making them the preferred options. However, Francois Beauchemin lead the entire NHL in blocked shots last season and has enough offensive upside to make him a fine value play in all formats.
