After racking up five straight victories heading into the Thanksgiving holiday, the Carolina Hurricanes have been cooled off lately as their 3-2 loss to the New York Rangers on Tuesday made them losers of three of their last four games. They’ve posted an ugly 3-6-4 record away from Raleigh this season and unfortunately their road trip continues tonight as they make the short trip north to Boston. With Eric Staal now out of the picture (and his brother Jordan Staal now on IR), Jeff Skinner has emerged as their most dangerous offensive weapon. Skinner has posted nine goals and ten assists in 21 games this season and his 76 shots on goal has him ranked in the top 10 of the entire NHL. He’ll be joined by Victor Rask and Elias Lindholm on the top forward line, but with Patrice Bergeron and Brad Marchand likely tasked with slowing that group down, their fantasy outlook does take a hit with this matchup. Meanwhile, the second line of Sebastian Aho, Teuvo Teravainen and Lee Stempniak has proven to be rather inconsistent, but all three players see plenty of run with the man advantage and offer at least some GPP appeal. On defense, Justin Faulk may have just one assist in 11 games this month, but he’s still the top option from the Carolina blue-line. He routinely logs well north of 20 minutes of ice-time per game and thrives on the point of the #1 power-play unit (12 power-play goals in 64 games last season). Alternatively, 19 year-old and former first-round pick Noah Hanifin also sees plenty of work on the point of that #1 power-play unit and is off to a fine start with eight points in 22 games. He’s also struggled in the offensive end lately, but is in play tonight on sites where the price is right.
It’s been a rough start to the season for the Boston Bruins, and after battling back to even Tuesday’s game against Philadelphia at 2-2, they ultimately fell short in a shootout. That loss was their fifth in the last seven games and pushes their record down to 12-10-1. Breaking down this Boston team from a fantasy perspective is pretty straight forward as their top two scoring lines are responsible for a disproportionate amount of their offensive output. Brad Marchand scored his seventh goal of the season on Tuesday night and now leads the Bruins with 20 points in 23 games this season. He’s joined by longtime partner Patrice Bergeron and the up-and-coming David Pastrnak on the top forward line. Pastrnak has posted an impressive 13 goals in 18 games this season with his new linemates while Bergeron looks to be gripping his stick too tight at the moment but is simply too talented to be held in check for long. David Krejci remains a stable offensive option for Claude Julien and he centers a very capable secondary scoring line alongside David Backes. All five players also see plenty of work with the man advantage but you’ll want to pump the breaks just a bit as the Carolina Hurricanes do happen to own the NHL’s #1 penalty kill. On defense, Torey Krug quarterback’s the #1 power-play unit and is really the only strong option to consider with Zdeno Chara sidelined.

In a battle between the highest and lowest scoring teams in the NHL to start the 2016-17 season, the Rangers will head update to battle the Buffalo Sabres tonight at the KeyBank Center. New York leads the NHL by averaging 3.67 goals per game this season and find themselves in first place in the Metropolitan Division with a 16-7-1 record. Their offensive success has been a byproduct of three very balanced scoring lines, which is great news for Rangers fans and Alain Vigneault, but does cause some headaches from a DFS perspective. This can be highlighted by the fact that New York already has 14 players with double-digit points and this will be just their 25th game of the season. Crazy. The Sabres have played admirably in their defensive end and should be much improved with Jack Eichel back in the lineup, but this does look like a fine option to target the Rangers. With Buffalo owning a subpar 78.7% penalty kill, I’ll try to simplify things and target the New York power-play. Rick Nash remains extremely dangerous on the wing of the top power-play and looks to be heating up with three goals and a pair of assists over the last five games. He’s joined by J.T. Miller and Mats Zuccarello up-front on that power-play and both players are off to fine offensive starts. Ryan McDonagh has yet to find the back of the net this season but is still the #1 option on the Rangers blue-line. He’s averaging nearly 24 minutes of playing time per game this season and has already dished out 13 assists. Nick Holden and Brady Skjei are far from household names, but both players have out-produced their modest price-tags thus far this season.
Jack Eichel made his season debut on Tuesday and it didn’t take him long to make Buffalo fans remember what they had been missing. Eichel scored a goal and added an assist in Buffalo’s 5-4 win in Ottawa and, while they will take the ice sitting in the cellar of the Metropolitan Division, this team is finally getting healthy. Eichel’s presence in the lineup finally gives Dan Bylsma the two balanced scoring lines he was unable to fabricate through the first quarter of the season as Eichel will Evander Kane and Sam Reinhart on one line with Ryan O’Reilly centering Kyle Okposo (and Will Carrier) on another. Facing Henrik Lundqvist is clearly not ideal, but both lines offer significant upside and make for fine GPP targets. Rasmus Ristolainen looks poised for NHL stardom and continues to take huge strides in his fourth season at the NHL level. The 22 year-old has yet to find the back of the net this season but has still be a fine fantasy option as he’d dished out 11 assists in 22 games and his shot blocking abilities give him the high-floor you should be searching for in cash games.

If you’re a fan of offense, then tune in to this one tonight. Dallas has lost each of their last two games and enter tonight with a disappointing 9-9-6 record, but there is no denying that they have plenty of offensive firepower. They’ve developed a reputation for being one of the fastest paced teams in the NHL over the last several seasons and this should be an up-and-down affair tonight as the Penguins happen to be ranked second in the NHL in pace this season behind only Toronto (118.85 CP60). With the Stars really lacking anyone that can try to slow down Crosby/Malkin, Lindy Ruff really has no choice but to fight firepower with firepower meaning a heavy workload for each of his top two forward lines. Those lines have been fluctuating a bit over the last several games, but it appears that Tyler Seguin and Jamie Benn will remain together on the top line (along with Cody Eakin) leaving Jason Spezza to play alongside Patrick Eaves and Patrick Sharp on the second line. As you’d probably expect, Seguin leads the team with 24 points in 24 games with Benn trailing just behind with 20 points. On defense, things are just starting to get weird with John Klingberg. After seemingly crawling out of the doghouse after missing a team meeting last week, he was unexpectedly scratched from Tuesday’s game with Detroit. WIth just two points over his last eight game and both Julius Honka and Jamie Oleksiak seemingly carving out bigger roles for themselves, this is definitely a situation to monitor. If Klingberg finds himself watching from the press-box again, Julius Honka will quarterback the very dangerous #1 power-play unit and becomes a very nice value on the blue-line.
After falling behind 3-0 to the New York Islanders last night, the Penguins mounted an impressive comeback and lit the lamp three times in the third period to square the game at three. However, New York broke their hearts with a pair of goals (just three seconds apart) to win the game with less than 30 seconds remaining. Pittsburgh won’t have much time to sulk about the loss as they’ll head home to battle the Dallas Stars tonight. Pittsburgh has been an excellent source for fantasy production in recent seasons and it’s no different this year as they’ve been extremely aggressive offensively as evidenced by their NHL best 61.87 CF60. The Penguins boast one of the best 1-2 punches in the entire NHL with Sidney Crosby leading Conor Sheary and Patric Hornqvist on one line and Evgeni Malkin waiting as the center of the “second” line (alongside Bryan Rust and Jake Guentzel). By no surprise to anyone that has ever watched them play, both Crosby and Malkin sit tied for the team lead with 22 points and both are tremendous options tonight as Dallas’ style of play should suit them perfectly. Phil Kessel still seems like the odd man out at even strength, but the All-Star does join Malkin and Crosby on the #1 power-play unit and has posted 21 points of his own this season. Kris Letang quarterback’s that #1 power-play unit and will be looking to snap out of a season-long three game pointless streak. He’s an elite option on the blue-line with Trevor Daley and Justin Schultz both options if you’re looking for some salary relief. Daley has the added “benefit” of taking on his long-time former team tonight.

The month of November was not kind to the New York Islanders, but they closed it out with two straight wins and finally appear to have at least some momentum behind them as they head into our nation’s capital on the tail end of a back-to-back. New York defeated the rival Pittsburgh Penguins by a 5-3 margin last night and will be looking for some revenge tonight as the Capitals picked up a hard-fought 2-1 victory the only previous time these teams have met this season. Playing on back-to-back nights is never easy and it’ll be particularly tough for New York tonight as Washington has allowed just 2.24 goals against per game this season and have one last season’s Vezina Trophy winner between the pipes in Braden Holtby. John Tavares is the headliner for New York and the top option on a nightly basis. He’s racked up 17 points in 22 games this season and skated predominately alongside Josh Bailey and Brock Nelson on the top line in last night’s game. Behind them, Jack Capuano has been looking for someone to step up offensively, but it just hasn’t happened yet. On defense, Nick Leddy and Johnny Boychuk have shown the most offensive upside and are locked into heavy workloads with Dennis Seidenberg still sidelined. They both see plenty of work on the point of the power-play and this Washington penalty kill has actually been somewhat mediocre this season (82.6%)
In comparison to their President’s Trophy winning 2015-16 campaign, the Capitals have been a bit sluggish out of the gates this season. With that said, they still sport a very solid 13-6-3 record and have posted an 8-3-0 record at the Verizon Center. When targeting the Capitals, it’s natural to give Alex Ovechkin the first look and that’s particularly true tonight as he torched this Islanders team for six goals in their four meetings last season. He’ll put a four game point streak on the line tonight, has poured in ten goals and four assists in 11 home games and trails only Brent Burns with 86 shots on goal. Needless to say, he’s a top-tier option if you can afford him. Nicklas Backstrom has the luxury of centering him on the top forward line (along with Marcus Johansson) and has quietly posted a team best 20 points on the young season. Alternatively, Evgeny Kuznetsov joins Backstrom and Ovechkin on the top power-play unit and seems too talented to be held in check for much longer. With the Islanders owning an ugly 80.0% penalty kill, all three players deserve an upgrade. With that still in mind, John Carlson shoots up my rankings on the blue-line. He quarterbacks the #1 power-play unit and it’s only a matter of time until he finally gets a puck into the back of the net as he’s already unloaded 50 shots on goal (and has a 5.4% career shooting percentage). If you’re searching for some value, Matt Niskanen is much cheaper across the industry and has put up similar offensive numbers thus far this season.

Just one year removed from winning the Atlantic Division, Florida’s decision to fire Gerard Gallant.struck me as weird and unnecessary. In their first game without their former coach, the Panthers played well but ultimately lost in a shootout against the Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday night. Tonight, they’ll look to get Tom Rowe his first NHL coach victory as the head to Joe Louis Arena for the very last time to face a Red Wings team who they’ve steamrolled in both prior meetings this season. The Panthers have dealt with key injuries all season, but with Nick Bjugstad finally back in the lineup now the only major contributor sidelined is Jonathan Huberdeau. Jonathan Marchessault surprisingly leads the club in scoring with 18 points in 23 games and has torched Detroit in those two prior meetings; scoring two goals and adding two assists. He’ll be joined by Aleksander Barkov and Jaromir Jagr both at even strength and one the #1 power-play unit and all three players look like fine options considering Detroit’s puck possession problems (46.16 CF%). Keith Yandle and Aaron Ekblad give the Panthers one of the top defensive tandems in the NHL. Both players log well north of 20 minutes of ice-time on a nightly basis and share the duties on the point of the #1 power-play unit. With Detroit currently sitting in the bottom third of the NHL in penalty kill (81.4%), they’re both solid targets for all game formats.
The Detroit front office did the best they could to mask it, but this Red Wings team is officially in the midst of a rebuild. After a fairly hot start out of the gates this season, the Wings own just a 5-8-2 record over their last 15 games and it’s starting to look rather apparent that their 25-year playoff streak is in serious jeopardy this season. With that said, they have actually won three of their last four games and are armed with a stable of young forwards that have already flashed some serious upside. Henrik Zetterberg is the team’s captain and backbone, and while he’s nearing the end of a great career, he’s still enters tonight’s game leading Detroit with 15 points (in 23 games). He’ll be flanked by two of those previously mention young forwards on the top line, Tomas Tatar and Anthony Mantha. After years of putting up gaudy offensive numbers in junior hockey, injuries have finally forced Detroit’s hand in getting Mantha to the NHL level and he hasn’t disappointed. He scored his third goal of the season in Tuesday’s game and has looked like Detroit’s best player at times already this season. Alternatively, Dylan Larkin is a bit more well known and obviously has plenty of upside as well. With talented wingers Thomas Vanek and Gustav Nyquist on his wing, Coach Blashill does have two strong scoring lines and should utilize the Nielsen/Abdelkader/Glendening line in more of a defensive role. On defense, Mike Green is the most stable option. He’s posted 13 points in 23 games this season and logs heavy minutes on the point of the power-play. If you’re looking for some value, Ryan Sproul strong play has earned him plenty of power-play time as well and he’s responded with five points in just 12 games this season.
