The RotoGrinders MLB Grind Down will give you an in-depth analysis into the upcoming MLB schedule. This article will break down the numbers for every single game and give you analysis on which trends you can exploit. While matchups are a major factor in daily fantasy baseball, there are plenty of other factors to consider such as injuries, weather, and salaries.
The analysis should point you in the right direction, but it is still up to you to decipher the information and make your own selections. No sport has more variance than baseball. The best choice is not always the right choice but following the trends will win you money over time.

Leake is a better pitcher in real life than he is in daily fantasy. In 28 starts this season, he has a 3.91 SIERA with a strikeout rate of only 16.5%. He typically doesn’t pitch deep into games and he doesn’t have enough upside to make him a viable fantasy play. He draws a difficult matchup against the Cubs, who are ranked eighth in team wOBA against right-handed pitching and third in runs scored per game. Arrieta is the preferred target in this game.

Arrieta hasn’t had the same dominance this season, but he still owns a 2.96 ERA (4.00 SIERA) with a strikeout rate of 23.7%. His swinging strike rate is down slightly, but the biggest difference this season has been his command. He has walked nearly twice as many batters this year. He draws a difficult matchup against the Cardinals, who are ranked fourth in team wOBA and second in team ISO against right-handed pitching this season. Even though he is ranked as the second overall pitcher, he is overpriced given his matchup and current form.
Batter Grind Down
St. Louis
The Cardinals have the lowest implied team total on the board today, but they have a knack of winning games this time of year. They need this game a lot more than the Cubs do, as they are currently battling with the Mets and Giants for the two wildcard spots in the National League. I won’t be targeting any of the Cardinals’ hitters in daily fantasy, but I have a feeling that this game will be closer than Vegas is projecting.

Chicago Cubs
The Cubs come into this game with the fourth highest implied team total in the slate. Their matchup against Mike Leake isn’t what I would call favorable though, as he is a ground ball pitcher that has held both left and right-handed hitters under a .325 wOBA this season. I’m not going to have a lot of exposure to this game and given the fact that it is only included in the all day slate, it’s an easy one to avoid altogether.

I like to think that I’m a nice person, so rather than saying Miller has been hot garbage on the mound this season, I’ll just say that he has been a letdown. In 18 starts, he has a 5.15 SIERA with a strikeout rate of only 14.9%. His ground ball rate is down this year, while his hard contact rate is up nearly 10%. He grades out as the worst pitching option in the slate, as he takes on a talented Orioles’ offense in Camden Yards.

Speaking of hot garbage Gallardo has also had his struggles on the mound this season, posting a 5.34 SIERA with a strikeout rate of only 16.1%. His command has been off and he hasn’t been able to induce as many ground balls this year. He may be favored tonight, but that says more about the Orioles’ offense than it does anything else. This game has one of the highest over/unders on the board. Gallardo can be avoided in all league formats.

Arizona
The Diamondbacks are typically an offense that we like to target at home, but we have to love the spot tonight against Yovani Gallardo. On the season, he has allowed a .356+ wOBA to both left and right-handed hitters. The Diamondbacks also see a lateral ballpark shift playing in the hitter-friendly Camden Yards.

The Orioles have the highest implied team total in the entire slate. They have mashed against right-handed pitching all season, ranking third in team wOBA and first in team ISO. They draw an excellent matchup against Shelby Miller, who has allowed a .420 wOBA to left-handed hitters and a .335 wOBA to right-handed hitters this season.

Gonzalez may have a high ERA over his last six starts, but his peripheral stats suggest that some improvement could be on the horizon. During that stretch, he posted a 3.14 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 24.8%. The big problem with rostering Gonzalez is that pit that you get in your stomach when lineups lock. I like to compare it to a late night run to Taco Bell. It just doesn’t sit right. As a small underdog on the road, I will be looking elsewhere at pitcher.

Taillon has been an excellent source of value in his rookie season. In 16 starts, he has a 3.58 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 19.8% and a walk rate of 3.8%. The only knock on him has been his inability to pitch deep into games (85.8 pitches per start). He does get to pitch at home tonight, but he draws a fairly difficult matchup against the Nationals. On the season, Washington is ranked 16th or better in team wOBA, team ISO, and team K% against right-handed pitching.

The Nationals come into tonight’s game with a mediocre run projection of 3.89. This isn’t exactly an ideal matchup, as they are facing a talented pitcher in Jameson Taillon and they have to face him on the road in a pitcher-friendly ballpark. Trea Turner, Daniel Murphy, and Bryce Harper are all viable one-off GPP plays, but the Nationals can be avoided in cash games.

The Pirates have flown under the radar against lefties this season. It may surprise some, but they are ranked fourth in team wOBA against southpaws. Their matchup against Gio Gonzalez isn’t elite by any means, but he has allowed a .323 wOBA and 18 home runs to right-handed hitters this season.

Mitchell is making his fourth start of the season. He hasn’t had a lot of success at the major league level, posting a SIERA over 6.00 with a strikeout rate well under 20%. He draws a difficult matchup tonight against the Blue Jays and he has to face them on the road in the hitter-friendly Rogers Centre. This is a great spot to stack the Jays, as they have one of the highest implied team totals in the slate.

Liriano has quietly been in good form over the last month of play, posting a 3.49 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 26%. This recent success could be sustainable, as his command has been better during that stretch, as has his swinging strike rate. He has burned enough bridges in the past that I expect him to be low owned tonight. He is one of my favorite GPP plays on the board, as the Yankees are a bottom ten offense against left-handed pitching this season.

NY Yankees
The Yankees have a below-average run projection tonight, even though they are playing in one of the best hitter’s parks in the American League. It sounds crazy, but that’s just another reason why we should consider Francisco Liriano. However, if you don’t trust him, he has allowed a .349 wOBA and 21 home runs to right-handed hitters this season.

The Blue Jays are ranked inside the top ten in both team wOBA and team ISO against right-handed pitching this season. Duffy has a high ERA in his last five starts, but his peripheral stats during that stretch have been good. He is typically a pitcher that we like to target for upside, but unfortunately, he may be too risky to use in DFS tonight. His biggest issue this season has been right-handed hitters and the Tigers will likely have nine right-handed batters in their lineup. On the season, Detroit is ranked above the major league average in team wOBA, team ISO, and team K% against left-handed pitching.

Fulmer has had a solid rookie season as a whole, but he comes into tonight’s game in bad form. In his last five starts, he has a 4.99 SIERA with a strikeout rate of only 13.5%. I’m often willing to overlook bad form when pitchers are still striking hitters out at a high rate, but his dip in strikeouts is concerning. I love the matchup against the Royals, but see Fulmer as more of a GPP play given his recent form.

The Royals are ranked 28th in team wOBA and 30th in team ISO against right-handed pitching this season. They have been off of the collective fantasy radar for quite some time and that will continue tonight against Michael Fulmer. Detroit
Thanks to a four-game winning streak of their own and a four-game losing streak of the Orioles, the Tigers now hold a half-game lead for the second wildcard spot in the American League. They have routinely let us down in favorable matchups this season, but maybe they can come through in a more difficult one. On the surface, their matchup against Danny Duffy doesn’t sound like an exploitable one, but he has allowed 22 home runs to right-handed hitters this season.
