Quintana has been a stellar cog to the White Sox early season run this year. He has not allowed more than two earned runs in any of his seven starts this year, which has resulted in an ERA of 1.38. His SIERA shows a bit of regression is in order as it sits at a solid 3.40 and his strikeout rate is at a career high of 24%. He does have a decent matchup against the Yankees in New York today, as the Yankees are ranked 23rd in team wOBA against left-handed pitching and is a slight favorite today. He is a decent play in the early slate today.

Nova is coming off his first start of the season where he was able to pitch pretty well against a tough Royals offense. The problem with Nova is the fact that he is just coming out from bullpen work for the first month of the season and will likely be capped around 85-90 pitches. This takes enough value away from him today, making him not a viable play in any format.
Batter Grind Down
Chicago White Sox
Vegas projects this game to be low scoring as the overall total sits at 7.5 and the White Sox have just a 3.93 team total. They do have a decent pitcher to attack as Nova has allowed a .320+ wOBA from both sides of the plate so far this year. Guys like , and have all been swinging a hot bat and will look to make that continue today.

Quintana has allowed a wOBA of under .270 from both sides of the plate this year and this Yankees squad has a team total of just 3.57 for the fifth lowest of the entire slate, and second lowest of the day slate. There are much better offenses to target in the early slate.

McHugh bounced back in his last outing to allow only one earned run in seven innings of work. He has not had the greatest start of the year as he enters this matchup with an ERA of 5.50 ERA. The advanced statistics show some improvement is in order as he has a 4.16 SIERA. With that said, his strikeout rate is only at 18% this year, and now has a very tough matchup against Boston who is the number-one ranked team in terms of wOBA against right-handed pitching. Avoid him today.

Buchholz has not been pitching well recently as he has allowed four or more earned runs in five of his seven starts this year. He comes into this game with a 5.02 SIERA (5.90 ERA) and now has to face an Astros offense that is ranked 16th in team wOBA and fifth in team ISO against righties. He currently has a career low strikeout rate of 15.7%, which drops his fantasy value tremendously in this matchup and should be avoided until he can turn it around.

Houston
Buchholz has really struggled so far this year getting lefties out as he has allowed a wOBA of .401. The Astros has a projected team total of 4.57 in this matchup, which is the 11th highest of the day and third highest of the day slate behind Boston and the Cubs.

McHugh has struggled to get batters from both sides of the plate out this year as he has allowed a wOBA of +.359 to both righties and lefties this year. The Red Sox have been one of the hottest offenses in baseball and have the fourth-highest projected run total today at 4.93. They have the fourth-highest team total overall and second highest of the day slate. They are a great offense to target in both cash and tournament settings.

Locke is not someone you want to target against a solid offense like the Cubs. He sports a SIERA of 5.02 and a low strikeout rate of 15.1%, after his first six starts this year. Now, he has to face the Cubs who lead the league in runs, which could be a recipe for disaster. Locke is an easy avoid today.

Arrieta was not able to completely shut out the Nationals’ offense last Sunday, which came as a shock to most people, yet he still had seven strikeouts over five innings and only gave up two earned runs. Arrieta has been great this year and is a solid play in all formats as he holds a low 3.41 SIERA and a solid 24.4% strikeout rate. He is arguably the top option of the day slate along with Kluber, as he is the heaviest favorite by far at -260. The only warning sign at all is the high overall total and the weather factor at Wrigley, but Arrieta should be just fine.

Targeting offenses against Arrieta is not exactly a winning strategy ever and does not appear to be one again today as the Pirates have the sixth lowest total of the day at 3.58. Avoid their offense today.

Chicago Cubs
The Cubs will look to give Arrieta a ton of run support today as the early indications are the wind is blowing out, which has resulted in a huge total of nine for this game. Chicago has the highest projected team total today, which is tough to do when there is a Coors game on the overall slate as well. Santana came off the DL last week and had a rough start against the White Sox where he allowed three earned runs in just 3.1 innings pitched. While he had been pitching decently (4.38 SIERA), he is too much of a risk at the moment, as we do not know how deep he will be able to pitch into games. Avoid him on the early slate.

Kluber has had an up and down season so far, which has resulted in a 4.14 ERA and a 2-4 record after seven starts. His advanced statistics show some improvement in in order as his SIERA sits almost a full run lower than his ERA (3.22). His strikeout rate has still been solid at 24.7% and his swinging strike rate is actually at a career best 13.0%. While Arrieta might be the safer option, Kluber comes with similar upside as he has a solid matchup against the Twins today who are ranked in the bottom third of the league in both wOBA and ISO against righties. Plus he has much better park factors going for him today than Arrieta.

Andriese had a great first start of the season last week against the Angels as allowed just one earned run over seven strong innings of work, but with just three strikeouts. He might make for a decent tournament option at FD where he is very cheap, but there is risk attached as he doesn’t have a ton of upside (16.9% career K rate). The matchup is decent against the Athletics who are ranked in the bottom third of the league in all the offensive categories listed below.

Last year, Andriese allowed a wOBA of .341 against left-handed batters. The Athletics have a low team total of 3.77, which is the eighth lowest of the day today. You can look to this game for value, but that is about it in terms of offense.

Graveman has struggled to get both lefties (.329 wOBA) and righties (.432 wOBA) out this year. The Rays could be a cheap source of offense today if you are paying up for pitching as they have a number of decent options at the top of the order that will be cheap across the industry.
