By the end of the season, Zimmermann may not love his decision to go to the American League. He gets at least one more start in a National League ballpark today, but the matchup is less than ideal. The Tigers are sizable favorites in this game and while the total is set at only 7.0 runs, there are better pitching options in the early slate. Zimmermann has a mediocre strikeout rate and is a bit too expensive given his matchup.

Cole has as much talent as just about any pitcher in baseball. He has been a frustrating DFS target over the years, but he comes into this start with a 3.27 SIERA and a strikeout rate of 24.2%. He doesn’t walk many batters and he produces a high ground ball rate. A matchup against the Tigers may not look great on paper, but he will have the platoon advantage over six of the eight position players in their lineup. Cole may be my favorite GPP play in the early slate.

Detroit
The Tigers have the lowest team total of the 14 teams playing in the early slate. They draw a difficult matchup against , who has held both left and right-handed hitters under a .285 wOBA. While the Tigers are generally matchup-proof, I will not be looking their way today. One lineup note – with the game being played in Pittsburgh, is not in the lineup since there is no DH.

The Pirates are sizable favorites today, but they only have the seventh highest team total in the early slate. They draw a mediocre matchup against , who typically doesn’t make many mistakes. The left-handed hitters in this lineup are decent targets, as Zimmermann has allowed a .330 wOBA to hitters from that side of the plate.

Pomeranz had a strong season with the A’s in 2015, but the biggest knock on him is his inability to pitch deep into games. He rarely throws more than 90 pitches in any start, which limits his upside. He is an intriguing tournament play today though, as he allows you to stack the hitters in Coors Field. He draws a great matchup against the Phillies and the total for the game is set at only 7.0 runs. The strikeout potential is there, I’m just not sure that he will last more than five or six innings.

Velasquez had a nice rookie season for the Astros, posting a 3.68 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 26.3%. The main issue that he had last year was his command, walking over 9% of the batters that he faced. Dollar for dollar, he may be my favorite play in the early slate, as the Padres’ offense has been absent to start the season. They strikeout at a high rate and they do not hit right-handed pitching well. Their lineup also looks pretty pathetic today.

I have very little confidence in the Padres’ offense right now. They weren’t able to get anything going against or and I’m not expecting much from them today against . Once again, you can look to the top of their lineup for some decent left-handed value plays, but for the most part we should be avoiding this offense.

The Phillies have been a little better than the Padres offensively, but that’s not saying much. They are still one of the worst offensive teams in baseball and they draw a difficult matchup against . The Indians’ starting rotation has had some great success in this series, with the exception of the two-run shot that gave up in the eighth inning on Tuesday. Tropicana Field is known as a pitcher’s park (for the American League anyway) and the Rays have a below-average offense against right-handed pitching. With a 26% strikeout rate last season, Salazar has tremendous upside in this matchup. The only concern is his run support with pitching opposite him. For that reason, Salazar is best suited for GPPs.

Archer has not gotten off to a great start this season. In his first two starts, he has only lasted ten innings, while giving up 15 hits and nine runs. He does have 17 strikeouts under his belt though, and he draws his best matchup so far this year. I always love targeting Archer at home, where he had a ridiculous 33% strikeout rate in 2015. I prefer using Archer on sites that favor strikeouts over the win (DraftKings) just because he may not see any run support with pitching opposite him.

If you look at Latos 2015 season, his numbers aren’t awful. He had a 3.94 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 19.8%. He may have a tough time replicating that this season though, especially since he moved to the American League. He is a small underdog today against the Twins. While Minnesota hasn’t hit right-handed pitching well over the last couple of seasons, that’s not enough for Latos to deserve consideration tonight.

Santana is not a pitcher that I like targeting in DFS. He is a little bit too erratic and he struggles with consistency on a start-to-start basis. Since the start of last season, he has a 4.38 SIERA with a mediocre strikeout rate of 8.1%. He is listed as a small favorite today against the White Sox, but the total for the game is set at 8.5 runs. There are enough pitching options that we don’t need to look at Santana in cash games or tournaments.

The White Sox are an offense that almost always gets overlook. Even one of the best hitters in baseball, , typically has a lower ownership than you would expect. They draw a decent matchup today against , but with a game in Coors, I certainly wouldn’t list any of the White Sox bats as must starts. Of the 14 teams in action in the early slate, the Twins have the fourth highest team total. If you are looking to fade the Coors game in tournaments, a Twins’ stack is certainly a nice pivot. Peralta is one of my favorite pitchers to pick on. He has one of the lowest strikeout rates of any starting pitcher in baseball (12.7%) and he struggles with both left and right-handed hitters. You will not see me roster him this season, especially not on the road against the Cardinals. Peralta is the largest underdog on the board for a reason. He should be avoided in all league formats.

The combination of price, matchup, and safety make Garcia my favorite cash game play in the early slate on FanDuel. As I mentioned above, is the top pitcher overall, but Garcia is cheaper and has a much better chance of picking up the win. This Brewers’ offense isn’t scaring anyone. Since the start of last season, they are ranked 24th in wOBA and 23rd in strikeout rate against left-handed pitching. Garcia should see plenty of run support with pitching opposite him.
Batter Grind Down
Milwaukee
The Brewers have been one of the worst offenses in baseball over the last couple of seasons. They have a low team total today, as they square off against in the pitcher-friendly Busch Stadium. This is a difficult matchup for all hitters, as Garcia has held both lefties and righties under a .275 wOBA since the start of last season.

St. Louis
The Cardinals are my favorite offense to target outside of Coors Field. They are priced fairly, making them strong plays in both cash games and tournaments. There are few better matchups than , as he has allowed a .352+ wOBA to both left and right-handed hitters. While I like all of the bats in this lineup, it’s hard to ignore the .392 wOBA Peralta has allowed to lefties.
