Matt Boyd was getting lucky there for a while, but he’s come back to earth over his last 2 starts. On the season, he has a 4.15 ERA coupled with a 4.71 SIERA. He’s about average as far as strikeouts (19.9%) while still walking nearly 10%. The lefty has yielded a hard contact rate of nearly 36% and he is a pretty staunch fly ball guy. Today Boyd will face a decent Toronto lineup in a good park for power. Given Boyd’s fly ball tendencies and his general erratic nature, he’s an easy fade.
Quick Breakdown: Fade Boyd against the Jays.

Sam Gaviglio has quietly given Toronto some good innings this season. The 28-year-old right-hander has a respectable 3.66 SIERA along with a solid 23.3% strikeout rate on the year. He has done a fine job of keeping the walks and hard contact to a minimum while inducing grounders at a 47.5% clip. While he did throw 104 pitches in a game earlier this year, the Jays have had a fairly quick hook with him in general. Gaviglio hasn’t topped 77 in any of his last 3 starts. The lack of depth he’ll give you is a concern, but he gets a favorable matchup today against a pretty punchless Tigers lineup. That said, he’s a bit overpriced, especially on DraftKings.
Quick Breakdown: Gaviglio probably won’t kill you, but there are better and cheaper SP2s worth considering.
Batter Grind Down
Detroit
Sam Gaviglio has been solid this season, but he’s no ace. The Tigers typically aren’t a great team to stack, but you can give it a try if you want to differentiate yourself in GPPs. I’d start with the lefties like Leonys Martin and Jeimer Candelario, while Nick Castellanos is another appealing option. After those 3, the quality of the Tigers’ hitters drops off considerably, so I probably wouldn’t bother trying to get cute with the lesser bats.

Toronto
The Jays get an exploitable matchup against Matt Boyd, a homer-prone lefty that doesn’t miss many bats. 50 of the 60 homers the southpaw has allowed in his career have come against right-handers, so I’d start there with Toronto’s bats. Justin Smoak, Kendrys Morales, Teoscar Hernandez, Randal Grichuk, Yangervis Solarte and Russell Martin are plenty viable in this matchup, whether as a stack or as individual plays. The Jays can throw 8 or 9 righties in the lineup against Boyd, which makes them an appealing offense top-to-bottom.

We saw Adalberto Mejia in the Twins’ rotation last year, but this will mark his 2018 debut in the majors. In 21 MLB starts last year, the left-hander had a 19.2% K-rate along with a SIERA of 4.95. He has flashed decent strikeout ability at the lower levels, but it hasn’t quite translated to the majors for him yet. While Mejia will get the benefit of shifting from the AL to the NL, it’s expected to be hot and windy in Chicago today. The ball flies at Wrigley when the wind is howling, so avoiding pitchers in this one is probably prudent.
Quick Breakdown: Fade Mejia today at windy Wrigley.

The Cubs were hopeful that Tyler Chatwood would pitch well now that he doesn’t have to pitch half of his games at Coors Field, but that hasn’t been the case. The right-hander’s 20.3% strikeout rate is only slightly higher than his crazy 20% walk rate. He does have a 3.95 ERA, but his 5.94 SIERA is a huge red flag. The strong ground ball lean (over 55% this season) helps Chatwood get out of trouble from time to time, but how can you roster a guy that has walked at least 5 in 9 of his 14 starts? The hitting conditions at Wrigley today make Chatwood a huge risk.
Quick Breakdown: There’s more downside than upside with Chatwood.
Batter Grind Down
Minnesota
The Twins face off against wild righty Tyler Chatwood. Chatwood’s ground ball ways can make him a tough pitcher to stack against, but the Twins grade out as a strong offense in this spot. Chatwood has allowed a wOBA 100 points higher to lefties than righties, so I’d start with guys like Eddie Rosario, Eduardo Escobar, Max Kepler and Logan Morrison here. The frustrating Brian Dozier is playable, while you can even take a shot with Joe Mauer here.

Chicago Cubs
The Cubbies face left-hander Adalberto Mejia today at hot and windy Wrigley. Mejia hasn’t shown much ability to get lefties out at this level (.365 wOBA vs. LHB), so I wouldn’t be afraid to deploy a couple of Cubs left-handers against him. Anthony Rizzo is the top play, followed by righties like Javier Baez and Willson Contreras. “(player-popup #albert-almora)Albert Almora Jr, Addison Russell and Jason Heyward are lower priorities, but still strong plays. The Cubs are the top offense of the entire day.

Adam Plutko has put together some decent outings this season, but I’m not buying it yet. He’s a right-hander with a 4.84 SIERA and a strikeout rate a shade over 17%. He’s kept the walks in check, but he has allowed a hard contact rate dangerously close to 40% and he is an extreme fly ball guy. Fly balls have a way of turning into outs in the spacious coliseum in Oakland, but the A’s also have a way of hitting a bunch of dingers. Plutko has already conceded 8 homers in just 6 games. Stacking the A’s looks like a far more fruitful strategy than deploying Plutko against them this afternoon.

The veteran was excellent in his first start against the Tigers last week, holding Detroit to just a run on 6 hits with 7 punchouts in 6 innings of work. It only took him 80 pitches, too. In 16 combined outings with the Orioles and Nationals last season, Jackson had a 5.03 SIERA combined with a 17.7% strikeout rate. He’s also facing the Indians today. While the Tribe get a substantial park downgrade, playing Jackson today comes with immense risk. He’s a great story, but unfortunately we don’t get fantasy points for #narratives.
Quick Breakdown: Jackson once threw 149 pitches during a no-hitter. Something tells me neither of those things will happen today.

Cleveland
Edwin Jackson has been around forever, but he’s also been quite hittable over the course of his career. He’s yielded a .344 wOBA to lefties with a .336 mark against righties. The Indians have enough talented hitters of either handedness that I think they make for a fine stack here today. This isn’t an ideal setting for bats, but the Tribe are still stackable. The LHBs like Francisco Lindor, Michael Brantley, Jose Ramirez and Yonder Alonso instantly stand out. RIghties can hid Jackson, too, so I’m cool with Edwin Encarnacion (in an Edwin-Edwin matchup, no less!) if you want to round things out.

Oakland
The A’s will take their hacks against Adam Plutko, a hittable righty that allows tons of fly balls and no shortage of hard contact. You want to start with the lefties here, as Plutko is a RHP that has allowed a .412 wOBA against lefties in his career. Matt Olson, Matt Joyce and Jed Lowrie jump to the top of the list. Plutko isn’t much better against righties, though, so you can always go that direction with someone like Khris Davis. Dustin Fowler isn’t very good, but he will probably hit leadoff in a favorable matchup so he’s in play, too.

Tyler Skaggs has been a steady presence for the Halos this season. The left-hander has a strong 26.3% strikeout rate along with a 3.49 SIERA. The hard contact rate over 38% isn’t exactly ideal, but he’s pitched well in spite of an unlucky .322 BABIP against him. Skaggs has stifled fellow lefties this season while allowing a .331 wOBA and 6 dongs to righties. The Orioles are a bad offense, so Skaggs could certainly mow them down today. The problem is that Baltimore is a righty-heavy offense, and there are still some decent hitters here. Skaggs is also expensive and is getting a substantial park downgrade going into Baltimore.
Quick Breakdown: Skaggs is one of the better pitchers taking the mound today, but you have to pay a hefty price tag for him.

Andrew Cashner got super lucky constantly last season, but he hasn’t been so fortunate this year. The veteran righty has a 4.85 SIERA along with a middling strikeout rate just over 18%. He also has a 10.4% walk rate and he has been way more fly ball dependent than in years past. After allowing 15 homers all of last year, Cashner has already served up 14 dingers in 2018. Against an Angels offense that doesn’t strike out often, I don’t see any reason to try the Andrew Cashner devil dance today.
Quick Breakdown: Cashner is an easy fade.

LA Angels
The Angels draw a matchup against a hittable right-hander with a home run problem. After DHing for a week due to an injured finger, Mike Trout returned to the field last night in center. He said he would do so when healthy, and he sure looked healthy. Trout hit a home run in the first inning and enjoyed a stellar night at the plate, so it looks like we can play him again. Luis Valbuena is also a good source of power that comes with a cheap price tag, while Justin Upton, Andrelton Simmons, Ian Kinsler and Albert Pujols are viable, too. The Halos are one of the very top offenses to target this afternoon.

The O’s face a solid pitcher today in Tyler Skaggs, but he’s still a lefty with a wide split pitching in a park friendly to power hitters. Manny Machado is always in play, especially when he has the platoon advantage. I would stop short of saying they’re elite options, but Mark Trumbo and Adam Jones are the next Orioles I’d target. Jonathan Schoop has really struggled this season, which makes him a GPP flier at best for me. I don’t hate the 3-man mini-stack of RHBs for tournaments.

While Jacob deGrom is the 1A pitching option on this slate, Justin Verlander is 1B. Verlander gets a park upgrade going into the Trop today, While the Rays aren’t a much better offense than the Marlins, they do have the benefit of putting a DH into the lineup. Still, Verlander has a ridiculous 31.3% strikeout rate on the season. His 3.04 SIERA is quite a bit worse than his 1.82 ERA, but both numbers are excellent. Verlander is a fly ball pitcher pitching in a park that has a way of turning fly balls into lazy flyouts. While I think deGrom is the right SP1 play, I wouldn’t tell you you’re doing it wrong if you opt for JV instead.

Ryne Stanek will get the start for the Rays today, but he’s the starter in name only. He won’t pitch deep enough into this game to warrant fantasy consideration, and as of this writing I haven’t seen who will come in behind him to log a few innings. It may be Matt Andriese, but there has been no confirmation as of yet. Andriese hasn’t pitched in 5 days, but whenever he does get into games he rarely goes far beyond 3 innings himself. You can target the non-starting Rays pitchers in certain situations, but this looks like a spot to avoid.
Quick Breakdown: Ignore Ryne Stanek and the rest of the Rays pitchers today.

Houston
The problem with bullpen games is that they’re tough to peg. The Dodgers absolutely wrecked the Mets in a similar spot last Sunday, and the Rays have generally gotten mixed results with their new strategy. Alex Bregman is on fire right now for the Astros, while Jose Altuve is Jose Altuve. I don’t have a problem targeting either hitter in this spot, even in pitcher-friendly Tropicana Field. George Springer is mired in a slump right now, so I may wait for him to snap out of it before paying up for him. This isn’t a great spot for the Astros in general, so I’m unlikely to load up on Houston bats today.
