MLB Grind Down: Sunday, July 24th
The RotoGrinders MLB Grind Down will give you an in-depth analysis into the upcoming MLB schedule. This article will break down the numbers for every single game and give you analysis on which trends you can exploit. While matchups are a major factor in daily fantasy baseball, there are plenty of other factors to consider such as injuries, weather, and salaries.
The analysis should point you in the right direction, but it is still up to you to decipher the information and make your own selections. No sport has more variance than baseball. The best choice is not always the right choice but following the trends will win you money over time.

: Samardzija has been going downhill in a hurry over the past month or so, and there are a bunch of signs that say avoid him in your fantasy lineups. Two glaring reasons for concern are his hard hit rate, which is way up, and his strikeouts, which are way down. Pitching is not strong today, and the Yankees are pretty hit or miss offensively, but I want nothing to do with him until we see some signs of life.

: After giving up four or more runs in six straight starts, the Yankees moved Eovaldi to the bullpen, where he seems to have regained some confidence. Eovaldi was able to handle the Orioles lineup in his first start back in the rotation, but the inability to go deep into games combined with a lower strikeout rate leave a lot to be desired here. I like him a little more than Samardzija but not enough to have a significant amount of exposure.

San Francisco
Giants: San Francisco is a lot like the Royals in that they put runs across the plate on a pretty steady basis but do not produce a ton of fantasy points in the process. If you are going to roll with multiple hitters from San Francisco, then you want the heart of the order with Belt, Posey, and Crawford as the higher upside plays. Outside of that, we have more sporadic production from this team.

NY Yankees
Yankees: This New York offense has been pretty poor for much of the year and seem to do just enough to give people hope that there is more, but they never quite follow through with an extended run. The two most productive bats have been Beltran and McCann, and that should be where you are looking as your main targets here. Samardzija has been bad, putting this Yankees squad in play, but I would not over-extend too much given their ability to let us down on a routine basis.

: In a battle of left-handed starters, Miley is the lesser of the two today in Toronto. He has produced a solid ground ball rate and the hard hit percentage is not too bad, but with little to no strikeout upside and a tough matchup against the Blue Jays, I cannot get behind him in this one.

: It has been a struggle for me to believe how good Happ has been on the season but I guess it is time to acknowledge the numbers. With how weak the pitching is overall on the day, Happ is a guy we have to consider as one of the better options more specifically on FanDuel where his price is easier to fit in. The strikeouts are up lately, giving him a little more upside. Just understand that he is prone to a blowup game from time to time.

Seattle
Mariners: Seattle is one of the better hitting teams in the league against righties, but have been in the middle of the pack against lefties on the year. They still pack a punch as is evident by their .172 ISO putting them in the top ten in the league for that category. With that said, this is a team that does not project well today and is risky at best.

Blue Jays: In terms of projected total, the Blue Jays rank up there with just about anyone on the board today, and there is a lot to like about them here. Miley has a lower strikeout rate and Toronto has been pretty good in that department, which means we should see more balls in play, and as a result, I like their chances of putting up big numbers. With a lefty on the mound, do not be afraid to dip down to the bottom of the order for a more creative stack with guys like and .

: The Diamondbacks have used Godley both out of the pen and as a starter this season, and the results have been pretty iffy in both situations. He carries a modest strikeout rate and walks too many batters but flashed more upside last year than we have seen so far. The best thing going for Godley is that he plays a Reds lineup that ranks near the bottom of the league in most offensive categories against righties on the season. With this price point, he is a fringe secondary option on multiple pitcher sites, but understand that there is plenty of risk here, which seems to be the case with most pitchers on this slate.

: The red in his chart above says all you need to know about his prospects here. If that was not bad enough, the Diamondbacks are one of the best offenses against left-handed pitching in the league, making Finnegan an easy fade for us today in this hitter’s park.

Arizona
Diamondbacks: This is a somewhat confusing team in that the wOBA for these hitters do not match the production we have seen from them overall. On the season, Arizona ranks in the top five in wOBA and ISO, but only three players show up in the projected lineup as blue in both of those categories. With Finnegan taking the hill, for the Reds today I like this team to put up some runs, and we can start with those three hitters but do not forget and as well.

: Matz is on quite the downswing after a very solid start to the season and one cannot help but wonder if that bone spur in his elbow is more of an issue than the Mets want to admit. Virtually every significant statistic we look at to predict pitching is on a decline, and although he is one of the most talented guys taking the mound today, it is hard to say just how much we can trust him here. Even with a weaker overall pitching pool, there are about five other guys I would rather roster than Matz. With that said, he still does have the upside, so sticking to tournament lineups makes the most sense.

: It is tough to gauge Urena, as his lone start came against the woeful Phillies, so take his numbers with a grain of salt. In the past, he offered much less strikeout upside and walked too many batters to consider him a viable option, and that is more than likely closer to the pitcher we will see today. As secondary options go, we do not have much to choose from, but even so, Urena is not on my list.

NY Mets
Mets: This offense has been a mess between injuries and just flat out poor production, but still find themselves with plenty of upside. A .175 ISO shows they have the pop to put up a solid number, and despite a lower projected run total in this one, the Mets are a team that I like a bit in tournaments today. Sure, the bats have been spotty at best, but Urena is not a good pitcher, and I like him to give up some runs in this one.

Marlins: Matz has an elite ground ball rate, but he has shown the tendency to get lit up from time to time. Still, with so many other elite offensive spots today, most Marlins are secondary options. The Marlins have shuffled the lineup around a bit, making a viable punt out of the leadoff spot, and has more power versus lefties than just about any hitter in baseball.

: Finally a top-tier arm with strikeout upside. The issue is he will face a top-tier offense in the Orioles today. Even so, Kluber is one of the best choices we have on the day, and while Baltimore does have the ability to put up runs in a hurry, they are also going to strike out enough to mitigate the risk some.

: One of the bigger surprises of the season in my mind has been the Cleveland offense, as they have just crushed right-handed pitching. Worley is not a guy you want to start too often and certainly not when the offense he is facing is this potent. Lower strikeout upside combined with a high walk rate makes this one an easy fade.

Baltimore
Orioles: This is absolutely a scary offense when facing right-handed pitching, and one look at the ISO column will tell you exactly why that is. With that said, Kluber has been very good lately with seven or more strikeouts in four of his last five starts and giving up two or fewer runs in those same starts. Baltimore is strictly a tournament team for me today because of the tough matchup.
