MLB Grind Down: Tuesday, August 2nd
The RotoGrinders MLB Grind Down will give you an in-depth analysis into the upcoming MLB schedule. This article will break down the numbers for every single game and give you analysis on which trends you can exploit. While matchups are a major factor in daily fantasy baseball, there are plenty of other factors to consider such as injuries, weather, and salaries.
The analysis should point you in the right direction, but it is still up to you to decipher the information and make your own selections. No sport has more variance than baseball. The best choice is not always the right choice but following the trends will win you money over time.

Does Bumgarner ever have a bad stretch of starts? I’m 99% positive that the answer is no. The boxes in his pitching table below are always blue and green. In 22 starts this season, he has a 3.23 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 28.4% and a walk rate of 6.0%. He has to be licking his chops for tonight’s matchup against the Phillies, who are shall I say, offensively challenged. They are currently ranked 22nd or worse in team wOBA, team ISO, and team strikeout rate against southpaws. There are enough aces on the mound that I wouldn’t call Bumgarner a must play, but he does have the highest rating of the 30 pitchers in action tonight.

Eflin isn’t the prototype of a pitcher that we are looking to target in DFS. In his first nine career major league starts, he has a 5.18 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 11.8%. He gives up more fly balls than ground balls and he has allowed a hard hit contact rate of 32.8%. His matchup against the Giants is less than ideal, as they have the second lowest team strikeout rate against right-handed pitching this season.
Batter Grind Down
San Francisco
The Giants should be better against right-handed pitching, but they are ranked 15th in team wOBA and 26th in team ISO on the season. They draw a favorable matchup tonight against in the hitter-friendly Citizens Bank Park. Their run projection is slightly above the average of the 30 teams in action and Eflin hasn’t been particularly effective against hitters from either side of the plate.

The Phillies are battling with the Braves for the right to be called the worst offense in baseball against left-handed pitching. They are ranked 30th in team wOBA and 29th in team ISO. With a matchup against , it’s no surprise that they have the lowest implied team total on the board. Every once in a while we will see something random happen (like the Twins going off last night against ), but over the long run, it’s not a great strategy to target hitters against elite pitchers.

Darvish has been sharp in his first six starts this season, posting a 2.89 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 34.1%. The only knock on him so far has been his pitch count, but he has thrown at least 90 pitches in each of his last three starts. Look for him to get closer to that 95 pitch mark tonight against the Orioles. This is a boom or bust matchup, as Baltimore is ranked third in team wOBA and 22nd in team strikeout rate against right-handed pitching. Darvish has double-digit strikeout potential in this matchup, but there is also some risk involved in targeting a pitcher against the Orioles in Camden Yards.

Bundy had a no-hitter going in his last start, but it was eventually broken up by the Rockies. He has yet to throw 90 pitches in any game this season, but he threw a season-high 89 pitches in his last start. He has shown nice strikeout upside and his price on DraftKings is still sitting at a measly $4,400. I originally had Bundy pegged as a viable SP2 in all league formats, but if newly-acquired and are in the Rangers’ lineup, I will end up fading Bundy in cash games and using him strictly as a GPP play.

The Rangers are a top ten offense against right-handed pitching this season. They come into tonight’s game with the tenth highest implied team total on the board, as they square off against . The sample size is obviously small, but Bundy has allowed a .336 wOBA to left-handed hitters and a .338 wOBA to right-handed hitters this season. The Rangers’ new acquisitions are tentatively expected to be in the lineup tonight.

Shields has a 1.78 ERA in his last five starts, which has given White Sox fans hope. While I’m not in the business of crushing dreams, I will say that you shouldn’t expect that type of success to continue. His peripheral statistics during that stretch are actually worst than his season long averages. He is one of the most hittable pitchers in baseball and tonight he has to face the Tigers on the road in Comerica Park. Sanchez has shown some signs of life recently, posting a 3.50 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 28.1% in his last four starts. Granted, he has an ERA of 8.41 during that stretch, but at least the peripherals are trending in the right direction. He draws a favorable matchup tonight against the White Sox, who are ranked 26th in team wOBA and 24th in team ISO against right-handed pitching. I may be in the minority here, but I actually like Sanchez more than tonight. Not only will his ownership be lower, but the matchup is a lot better as well.

Even though I like as a sneaky SP2 for tournaments, that doesn’t mean that we have to avoid the White Sox offense. They come into the game with the seventh highest implied team total on board. Sanchez is a fly-ball pitcher that has allowed 47 home runs in his last 41 starts. Ventura has been an easy fade in DFS this season. He has been a bit too erratic and his consistency from game to game is non-existent. He currently owns a 4.71 SIERA with a strikeout rate of only 17.4%. He also has the tough job of following the incredible show put on by last night. The Rays do present a favorable matchup for Ventura, but there is just as much downside as there is upside.

Andriese has been great out of the bullpen. Over the last month of play, he has a 2.49 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 28.9%. Unfortunately, he hasn’t thrown more than 50 pitches in over a month. I expect him to throw more than that tonight, but expecting anything more than five innings is silly. His upside is severely limited by a potential pitch count, making him an easy fade in both cash games and GPPs.

The Rays can’t be happy about their performance last night, but there is little that you can do when a pitcher is that locked in. They will look to bounce back tonight against , who is having a disappointing season thus far. Ventura has typical splits for a right-handed pitcher, allowing a .326 wOBA and 20 home runs to lefties, while holding righties under a .300 wOBA in the last two seasons.

When people hear that is on the mound, they immediately want to stack hitters against him. He hasn’t been that bad though, especially in his last five starts. During that stretch, he has a 3.52 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 21.5%. He also induces a lot of ground balls (52.1%) and his hard hit contact rate is well below 30% on the season. While I’m not trying to talk you into playing Gibson tonight against the Indians, he’s not exactly a gas can that we can automatically load up hitters against.

Carrasco has struggled a bit in his last few starts, similar to his teammate . I don’t expect the Twins to put up 12 runs against, but there is at least some cause for concern. The upside is always there with Carrasco, although his strikeout rate has dipped 6% this season. Feel free to fire him up in tournaments tonight, but there are safer options in cash games.

The Twins put up 12 runs last night against and the Indians, largely in part thanks to three home runs by . The Indians are sizable favorites tonight and come into the game with the 11th highest team total on the board. While I don’t mind their matchup against , I’m not head over heels about it. Gibson has been in good form over the last month of play and he induces a ground ball rate of 52%. The left-handed hitters in this lineup are worth a look, but I’m having a hard time labeling any of their bats as elite plays.
