We have an intriguing four game early slate with no clear number one pitcher. Cole is certainly a viable play here, especially if Matt Carpenter is unable to suit up. Cole hasn’t quite lived up to expectations as the number one overall pick, but he has improved in each of his first three starts this season. His strikeout rate is slightly below the league average, but he is facing a Cardinals’ offense that has come limping out of the gates this season.
Quick Breakdown: In what should be a close, low scoring game, Cole is worth a look in tournaments.

If you compare the numbers of Wacha and Cole, they are eerily similar. They both have a SIERA close to 4.20 and a strikeout rate around 19%. Wacha has the advantage of pitching at home and is listed as a slight favorite according to the Vegas line. The Pirates may not strikeout at a high rate, but they have very little power outside of Gregory Polanco and Andrew McCutchen. With Starling Marte suspended, that is only one less hitter for Wacha to worry about. After racking up 14 strikeouts in his first two starts of the season, Wacha is the preferred pitcher in this one. His swinging strike rate of 14.4% so far this season is jumping off the page at me.
Quick Breakdown: Viable in all formats. One of my favorite pitchers in the slate.
Batter Grind Down
Pittsburgh
In the last two seasons, Michael Wacha has had reverse splits, allowing a .361 wOBA to right-handed hitters. While that number is certainly high, he doesn’t allow a lot of hard contact and has been sharp in his first two starts of the season. Gregory Polanco and Andrew McCutchen are viable secondary plays in the outfield, but this is not an offense that we need to load up on in the early slate.

The Cardinals aren’t any better off than the Pirates’ offense, but at least they are playing at home. Gerrit Cole has been very tough on right-handed hitters, holding them to a 25% hard contact rate. Lefties have had success against him though, as he has allowed a .377 wOBA with a 38% hard contact rate. If Matt Carpenter is in the lineup, he can be targeted in tournaments. Dexter Fowler is also a decent option in the outfield.

To put it kindly, Milone has not been very good at baseball, at least not at the major league level. In his last 14 starts, he has a 4.54 SIERA with a strikeout rate of only 15.5%. He allows a lot of hard contact and he has struggled with batters from both sides of the plate. To make matters worse, he has to face the Cubs, who will likely end up having a top five offense against left-handed pitching this season.
Quick Breakdown: There are plenty of viable pitching options in this slate, but Milone is not one of them.

Hendricks doesn’t have the most electric fastball, but he has pinpoint control and some excellent breaking pitches. He has struggled a bit in his first two starts of the season, allowing seven earned runs while only striking out nine batters. He is a huge favorite at home against the Brewers, but at this point, I’m scared to target any pitcher that is facing Milwaukee. They have been absolutely mashing the baseball in the last two weeks. They are still a high strikeout team, so Hendricks is worth a look in tournaments, but he’s not my favorite cash game target. Update: Ryan Braun is not in the Brewers’ lineup. Bump up Hendricks.
Quick Breakdown: The strikeout upside is there and Hendricks is the biggest favorite in the early slate.

Milwaukee
There isn’t a hotter hitter in baseball than Eric Thames. The sample size is obviously small this season, but in 48 plate appearances, he has a .604 wOBA. This is obviously not sustainable production, but there is no reason why this hot streak can’t continue in the short run. Kyle Hendricks has been tough on both left and right-handed hitters, but there is something to be said about the streak that this team is on.

When Tommy Milone is on the mound, everyone is in play. He allows a high wOBA and a hard contact rate to both left and right-handed hitters. The Cubs have one of the highest implied run totals in the early slate and we can stack them in both cash games and tournaments. I prefer to use the right-handed bats in this lineup, but Kyle Schwarber and Anthony Rizzo have both shown an ability to overcome the daunted lefty/lefty matchup.

Perez may be playing in a pitcher-friendly environment, but there is no reason for him to be on your radar. At 12.6%, he has one of the lowest strikeout rates of any pitcher in baseball. Sure, he has a high ground ball rate and doesn’t give up a lot of hard contact, but when your strikeout upside each game is two or three batters, that’s just not going to cut it in DFS. This is also a bad matchup for Perez, as the A’s will likely throw nine right-handed hitters at him, most of which are fly ball hitters.

Hahn narrowly edged out Perez for the highest strikeout rate in this matchup. Since the start of last season, Hahn has struck out 12.9% of the batters that he has faced, which is 0.3% higher than Perez. Does that mean we should give Hahn a look? Of course not. With a strikeout rate this low, Hahn would have to pitch a near perfect game to reach value and we shouldn’t expect that in a matchup against the Rangers.

The sample size is only ten starts, but Jesse Hahn has some drastic differences between his splits to left and right-handed hitters. Against righties, he allows a .305 wOBA, a 24% hard contact rate, and he has a ground ball rate of 53%. Against lefties, he allows a .403 wOBA, a 37% hard contact rate, and he has a ground ball rate of 36%. Nomar Mazara and Rougned Odor are both in excellent spots today.

The A’s are my second favorite offense to target in the early slate, right behind the Cubs. Martin Perez struggles against right-handed hitters and he relies on a high ground ball rate to stay out of trouble. Meanwhile, the A’s will likely have nine righties in their lineup and every single one has an average or above-average fly ball rate. This is going to negate Perez’s ground balls and turn into a lot of hits. Even in this ballpark, I will be stacking the A’s in both cash games and tournaments.

Volquez carries very little fantasy appeal in most of his starts, especially when he is pitching on the road against a very capable offense. Volquez has a below-average strikeout rate and isn’t particularly effective against hitters from either side of the plate. There is more risk than potential reward here.

I’ve been avoiding Hernandez for over a year now, but I’m finally starting to believe in the comeback. His velocity has been a little better this season and his strikeout rate is back above 20%. He has been dominant at Safeco Field throughout his career and gets to face a Marlins’ offense that has very little power outside of Giancarlo Stanton. If I had to rank my four top pitchers in the early slate, I would go Hernandez, Wacha, Hendricks, and Cole (in that order).
Quick Breakdown: It’s been a while since the I’ve rostered the King. Let’s make it a good one, shall we?

With Felix Hernandez being my favorite pitching option in the slate, I’m obviously not too high on the Mariners’ offense. Even during his down year, Hernandez still limited the hard contact against him. The Marlins have a low implied run total and can be avoided in both cash games and tournaments. Dee Gordon and Giancarlo Stanton are the best options here, but I will be avoiding the Marlins as a whole.

Since the start of last season, Edinson Volquez has allowed a .349 wOBA to left-handed hitters and a .335 wOBA to right-handed hitters. The Mariners’ offense is in a good spot at home and they will want to bounce back in a big way after only getting one hit against Miami last night. Jarrod Dyson provides stolen base upside batting leadoff, while Mitch Haniger, Robinson Cano, Nelson Cruz, and Kyle Seager all have a hard contact rate of at least 34% against righties.

Covey is making his second career major league start. He didn’t have a great strikeout rate in the minors and posted a 13% walk rate in six Double-A starts a year ago. He comes into tonight’s game as one of the largest underdogs in the entire slate. The Yankees do not make easy outs, so Covey will have his work cut out for him.

Tanaka is one of my favorite pitchers in the slate and that’s saying something considering the fact that Clayton Kershaw, Madison Bumgarner, and Chris Archer are all on the mound tonight. This White Sox offense is absolutely dreadful against right-handed pitching. They only have two batters in their projected lineup with at least a .320 wOBA against right-handed pitching. They also strikeout at a high clip against righties. Tanaka may not be an elite strikeout pitcher at this stage in his career, but sees a major bump in this matchup. If you are a premium member, my hot take for the day in the Expert Survey is that Tanaka will rack up double-digit strikeouts.
Quick Breakdown: Clayton Kershaw is the top dog tonight, but Tanaka is an elite tournament play on FanDuel and a viable SP2 in all formats on DraftKings.

Chicago White Sox
The White Sox have decent numbers against left-handed pitching, but are one of the worst in baseball against righties. To make matters worse, Masahiro Tanaka has held both left and right-handed hitters under a .300 wOBA over the last two seasons. Even in the hitter-friendly Yankee Stadium, I will be avoiding the White Sox offense.

NY Yankees
The Yankees are one of the top stacks on the board tonight. For an 11 game slate, there are surprisingly not that many offenses in great spots, but the Yankees are one of the chosen few. Dylan Covey is a young pitcher that is only making his second career start above the Double-A level. He has not shown good command and the Yankees finally have some power in their lineup. The top seven batters in this lineup are all in play for stacking purposes. When it comes to the individual hitters, Brett Gardner, Jacoby Ellsbury, and Starlin Castro are all on my radar for cash games.
