After a somewhat sluggish start to the season, Ken Hitchcock has his St. Louis Blues rolling as we head into the middle of December. St. Louis battled back from a 2-0 hole to defeat the Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday night and now own an 8-1-1 record over their last ten games. They’ll kick off a four-game road trip tonight in Brooklyn sitting within three points of the Chicago Blackhawks for the lead in the Central Division and eager to make a statement to the entire league that they’re going to be a tough out come spring time (and perhaps beat up on their former teammate Jaroslav Halak). Offensively, all eyes immediately shift to Vladimir Tarasenko. The 24-year old has emerged as one of the game’s brightest stars and has already racked up 13 goals and 14 assists in 26 games this season. Alex Steen and Jaden Schwartz will join him on the top forward line making them both terrific options tonight in all formats as the Islanders have surrendered a troubling 10.29 SCA60 this season. Alternatively, the trio of Robby Fabbri, Paul Stastny and David Perron are very entertaining to watch and certainly capable of making New York pay if they focus too heavily on slowing down Tarasenko and company. On defense, it’s the same old story for the St. Louis Blues as Kevin Shattenkirk, Alex Pietrangelo and Colton Parayko are all fine options on a nightly basis. Shattenkirk leads them all with 19 points on the young season, and by nature of being the point-man on the #1 power-play unit, edges them out as the preferred option tonight.

The Islanders picked up a much needed victory over their cross-town rival New York Rangers on Tuesday night, but they have a lot of work to do if they hope to recover from their very poor start to the season. Surprisingly, New York will step on the ice this evening with the fewest points in the Western Conference and they have a very tough schedule ahead of them over the next week. By no surprise to anyone, John Tavares leads the Islanders with 20 points on the season and is easily the top player to target tonight. He’s posted 16 of those 20 points in 16 games at the Barclays Center and headlines the top forward line alongside Josh Bailey and Brock Nelson. With the Blues representing a very stiff test, perusing down their forward depth deeper than those three seems a bit unnecessary on such a large slate. On defense, they’re hoping to have Johnny Boychuk back in action this evening, but it’s been Nick Leddy that’s offered the most fantasy value thus far this season. Leddy has posted 11 points in 24 games this season and facilitates things from the point of the Islanders #1 power-play unit. Also, if Johnny Boychuk is unable to suit up again tonight, Calvin De Haan becomes a fine value as he’d be thrust into 20+ minutes of action and has really racked up blocked shots this season (69 BS in 25 games).

The Oilers have been up-and-down since their very strong start to the season, but despite losing each of their last two games, they still find themselves sitting atop the Pacific Division. Connor McDavid has been as good as advertised and appears to be poised to run away with the NHL scoring title as he’s racked up 36 points in just 28 games this season. Milan Lucic provides him some protection (and scoring potential on one wing of the top line, while Leon Draisaitl continues to thrive alongside McDavid as well. Draisaitl has racked up four goals and an assist over his last four games and the former third overall draft pick is still very reasonably priced on several sites around the industry. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Jordan Eberle have been familiar faces in Edmonton for years now, but the duo is often widely overshadowed by the McDavid line and that makes them very compelling GPP options against a fast-paced Philadelphia team (115.73 CP60). Oscar Klefbom and Andrej Sekera soak up nearly all of the available playing time on the point of the power-play and are therefore the top options on defense. They’re both reasonably priced and should be able to take advantage of Philadelphia’s subpar 81.3% penalty kill.

Don’t look now, but the Flyers are playing as well as any team in the league right now and their overtime win over Florida on Tuesday pushed their winning streak to six games. The key to their success this season has been their 23.8% power-play, and that’s where i’ll be focusing most of my attention this evening. Brayden Schenn, Claude Giroux, Wayne Simmonds and Jakub Voracek not only happen to be the four highest point-scorers on this hockey club this season, but all four join forces on the team’s #1 power-play unit. Wayne Simmonds leads the entire NHL with eight power-play goals on the young season with Claude Giroux posting an NHL best 14 power-play points. The Edmonton penalty kill has been decent overall this season but they have surrendered five power-play goals in four games this month giving all four forwards plenty of upside this evening. Shayne Gostisbehere is still in Dave Hakstol’s doghouse to some degree, but he’s picked up assists in each of the last two games and now owns 14 points in 27 games this season. He’s secured the reigns as the point-man on the #1 power-play unit and unloaded six shots on goal in his only meeting against this Edmonton team last season.

It’s been a rough start to the season for the Colorado Avalanche, and after a tough 4-3 loss in Nashville on Tuesday, they’ve now dropped each of their last six games. That losing streak has them firmly in the cellar of the Central Division and there really isn’t too much hope on the horizon as their road trip will continue tonight in Boston. There’s a chance that Colorado will finally get Gabriel Landeskog back in uniform tonight (monitor the news following their morning skate) but his potential return happens to come right about the same time they lost Erik Johnson for several months to a broken leg. The Avalanche have scored a Western Conference worst 2.17 goals per game this season, so there really isn’t a ton to love here on such a busy night. With that said, Jared Bednar does have two very dangerous weapons to throw over the boards tonight in Nathan MacKinnon and Matt Duchene. MacKinnon leads the team with 17 points and is set to headline the top line alongside Blake Comeau and Rene Bourque. Duchene on the other hand scored a pair of goals in Tuesday’s game and will continue to look to create offense alongside John Mitchell and the talented Mikko Rantanen on the second line. With Patrice Bergeron and Brad Marchand likely focusing more of their attention on the MacKinnon line, Duchene does appear to have the better matchup in this one. On defense, Erik Johnson injury was a big blow, but it does open the door for some huge minutes for Tyson Barrie and Francois Beauchemin. While Barrie is the more offensively alluring option, both players see plenty of playing time on the point of the power-play and Beauchemin’s shot blocking abilities give him a nice floor.

Boston fought back from a 3-0 hole in last night’s game against the Washington Capitals, but ultimately lost when Nicklas Backstrom found the back of the net a minute into the overtime period. That loss snapped their three game winning streak, but they do appear to be playing some of their best hockey of the season and can at least take some solace in the fact they they controlled play for the last 45 minutes of last night’s game against a very good Washington team. Things should be a bit easier for them tonight as they’ll square off against a Colorado team that has allowed 3.00 goals per game this season and also own an ugly 79.2% penalty kill. This gives the trio of Brad Marchand, Patrice Bergeron and David Pastrnak a big fantasy boost this evening. Pastrnak scored his team high 16th goal in last night’s game and now has 22 points in just 22 games this season. David Krejci and David Backes provide some grit and a secondary scoring punch on the second line where they’re joined by Tim Schaller whose become a fine “punt” play if you’re desperate for some cost savings. Zdeno Chara is finally back in the lineup for the Bruins, but it’s Torey Krug that has developed into Boston’s top weapon on the blue-line. Krug is locked into 20+ minutes of ice-time per game and facilitates things from the point of their very dangerous #1 power-play unit.

New Jersey has not been known for it’s offense in recent memory, but John Hynes definitely appears to have this team moving in the right direction. Since a sluggish start to the season, they’ve posted a rock solid 8-4-3 record over their last 15 games and have averaged 2.94 goals per game in the process. They’re finally healthy and now possess two very dangerous scoring lines. Taylor Hall headlines the top line alongside Adam Henrique and P.A. Parenteau while Travis Zajac centers the red-hot tandem of Michael Cammalleri and Kyle Palmieri on the second line. While all six players have proven to be fine options lately, Taylor Hall stands out as the top target. He’s exploded for two goals and seven assists over the last six games and is as offensively gifted as just about anyone else in the NHL. With all of that said, Montreal has allowed just 1.57 goals against per game at the Bell Centre this season and Carey Price should be well rested after getting the evening off on Tuesday. This matchup pushes New Jersey into GPP only territory for me tonight even considering some of their bargain price-tags.

The Canadiens coughed up a 2-0 third period lead in St. Louis on Tuesday and ultimately left a point on the table with an overtime loss. They’ve now dropped four of their last five games and there seems to be a small sense of panic in the air as Montreal fans remember the complete free-fall that this hockey team fell into about this exact same time last season. Michel Therrien likely had some choice words for him hockey club following that game on Tuesday and he’ll be expecting them to come out energized as they return home for the first time after a tough five-game road trip. With their leading scorer Alex Galchenyuk and David Desharnais both staring at long-term injuries, Montreal will need Max Pacioretty to step up his game. Their captain is having a down season by his standards, but led the team in scoring last season and has tallied two goals and two assists in the last four games. He’s slated to join Alexander Radulov on a top line that looks rather dangerous on paper. Alternatively, Tomas Plekanec and Brendan Gallagher have both been solid producers for several years in Montreal and will need to finally step up this season and pick up some of the scoring slack left behind by the Galchenyuk and Desharnais injuries. On defense, Shea Weber is a top tier option on a nightly basis. He’s averaging well over 26 minutes of ice-time per game this season and is not shy about unloading his booming slapshot from the point of the #1 power-play unit. New Jersey’s slow pace (105.93 CP60) is a small buzz-kill, but I do expect Montreal to get back to their winning ways this evening.

The Vancouver Canucks have averaged just 2.19 goals per game this season and draw a matchup tonight against an angry Tampa Bay Lightning squad. While Tampa Bay has posted an ugly 1-5-1 record over their last six games, they’re still very talented and it’s tough to look too long at Vancouver if you’re playing cash games. The Sedin twins (along with Brandon Sutter) are off to fine starts with 17 points a piece and are more than capable in the offensive end making them an intriguing pair to stack in GPP’s. Also, former first-round pick Bo Horvat appears to be taking a big step forward this season and looks to be developing a nice rapport with Sven Baertschi but they’re simply too inconsistent at this point for cash game consideration. On defense, both Troy Stecher and Ben Hutton are locked into heavy workloads while Alex Edler is sidelined and both players are benefiting from some added playing time with the man-advantage. However, despite their very mediocre start to the season, Tampa Bay proved to be a very strong team in their own end last season and figure to be much more stable defensively with Anton Stralman back in action.

Tampa Bay has failed to live up to their high expectations thus far this season, but they’ve still posted an impressive 7-3-1 record in eleven games at Amalie Arena and have a fine matchup awaiting them tonight against the visiting Vancouver Canucks. As one of the biggest favorites by Vegas standards on the board this evening, you can expect some elevated ownership on several of these Tampa players. With Steven Stamkos sidelined for the remainder of the regular season, Nikita Kucherov has really picked up his game and stepped into the top-tier of NHL offensive weapons. He’s now tallied 13 goals and 16 assists in 26 games this season and leads the dangerous first line alongside Alex Killorn and Vladislav Namestnikov. Jonathan Drouin joins those three on the #1 power-play unit, leaving Tyler Johnson and Ondrej Palat to provide some secondary scoring as a tandem on both the second forward line and #2 power-play unit. As mentioned above, Anton Stralman is finally back on the blue-line for Tampa and he’s logged over 25 minutes of ice-time in all three games since returning. Alternatively, Victor Hedman has been terrific all season and now owns 19 points in 27 games. He holds the reigns as the point-man on the #1 power-play unit where he’s certainly not shy about uncorking his booming slapshot.
