The RotoGrinders MLB Grind Down will give you an in-depth analysis into the upcoming MLB schedule. This article will break down the numbers for every single game and give you analysis on which trends you can exploit. While matchups are a major factor in daily fantasy baseball, there are plenty of other factors to consider such as injuries, weather, and salaries.
The analysis should point you in the right direction, but it is still up to you to decipher the information and make your own selections. No sport has more variance than baseball. The best choice is not always the right choice but following the trends will win you money over time.

Paulino is making his major league debut today, but unfortunately very few people will be watching a September game between the Astros and Indians that starts at 9 AM on the west coast. Paulino is a 22 year-old righty that is making his case to be one of the Astros’ top prospects. In Double-A starts this season, he posted a 2.20 FIP with a strikeout rate of 29.3%. He has a good fastball (94-96 MPH) and he complements it with a big curveball. While I’m excited to watch him pitch, I will not be taking him in DFS.

Bauer is one of those pitchers that you just never feel comfortable targeting in daily fantasy (similar to Gio WOAT Gonzalez). His numbers aren’t bad as a whole, but he struggles with consistency. He draws a boom or bust matchup against the Astros, who are ranked 13th in team wOBA and 11th in team ISO against right-handed pitching. With this being the only early game, it is only included in the all-day slate and there are a number of pitchers that I like more that take the mound tonight.
Batter Grind Down
Houston
The Astros have a mediocre run projection today, as they square off against Trevor Bauer in Cleveland. Houston has gotten to the Indians’ rotation in this series and I expect them to put up some runs in this matchup as well. Bauer doesn’t have the best splits at home and he has allowed a hard contact rate of 33% this season.

Cleveland
The Indians have the second highest run projection of the 14 teams on the schedule, but there are a lot of unknowns with their matchup. Pitching debuts are always difficult to predict and David Paulino has shown great strikeout potential in the minors. I love the idea of stacking the Indians in tournaments, but I don’t consider them must plays in cash games.

Straily has been in better form over the last month of play, but I’m not going to be targeting him in daily fantasy anytime soon. In 26 starts this season, he has a 4.73 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 19.9% and a walk rate of 9.3%. He comes into tonight’s game as a sizable underdog against a Pirates’ team that has a lot more to play for than the Reds. He can be avoided in both cash games and tournaments.

You know the slate is bad when Nova grades out as one of the top pitching options. He comes into tonight’s game in good form, posting a 2.89 ERA (3.59 SIERA) with a strikeout rate of 19.3% in his last six starts. He draws a favorable matchup against the Reds, who are ranked 17th or worse in team wOBA, team ISO, and team K% against right-handed pitching. I don’t feel good about it, but Nova is one of the top three pitching options tonight.
Batter Grind Down
Cincinnati
The Reds are a mediocre offense against right-handed pitching this season and that’s with half of their starts being in the Great American Ballpark. They see a negative ballpark shift tonight playing in PNC Park. They have the third lowest implied team total on the board. The one plus for the Reds is that Ivan Nova has allowed a .369 wOBA, 18 home runs, and a 35.7% hard contact rate to left-handed hitters.

The Pirates have lost eight of their last ten games and are now four and a half games out of the wildcard in the National League. They need a series sweep against the Reds. They come into tonight’s game with the sixth highest run projection, as they host Dan Straily. His splits don’t necessarily jump out at us, but Straily has allowed a 34.9% hard contact rate to right-handed hitters.

Asher is making his first start of the season. In seven starts last season, he posted a 5.34 SIERA with a strikeout rate of only 11.6%. While he posted a low ERA in the minors this season, he has never had a high strikeout rate at any level. He comes into tonight’s game as a sizable underdog against the Nationals on the road. This is not a good spot for Asher and he can be faded in all league formats.

Cole is coming off of his best major league start, allowing a single run in six innings of work against the Mets. He is still a bit of an unknown quantity at at this level, but with the lack of pitching options available tonight, he deserves a look in all formats. He draws one of the best matchups on the board, as the Phillies are ranked 29th in team wOBA and 24th in team ISO against right-handed pitching this season.
Batter Grind Down
Philadelphia
The Phillies have the lowest run projection of any team on the schedule tonight, which says a lot about the state of their offense given the fact that they are facing a pitcher that is only making his fifth career major league start. I have less confidence in the Phillies than I do in A.J. Cole, so I will be avoiding the Phillies’ bats in both cash games and GPPs.

Washington
The Nationals have let us down in some favorable spots recently, but they come into tonight’s game with the highest run projection in the slate. They draw an excellent matchup against Alec Asher, who has not pitched well at the major league level. Hitters from both sides of the plate are in play here and you can stack the Nationals in both cash games and tournaments.

Cobb was on his way to becoming one of the best pitchers in the American League before having Tommy John surgery in 2014. In his first start back in the majors, he picked up right where he left off. He struck out seven batters against the Blue Jays in five innings of work. Cobb only threw 84 pitches in that game and I expect his pitch count to be similar to that tonight. Even though he is a small underdog tonight against the Yankees, I have him ranked as the third best pitching option in the slate.

Sabathia has mixed it up this season, which has led to a higher ground ball rate and a lower hard contact rate. While those are solid improvements, it hasn’t led to more success on the mound. In 25 starts this season, he has a 4.46 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 19.5%. He draws a boom or bust type of matchup against the Rays. While they have the highest team K% against left-handed pitching this season, they have the fourth highest team wOBA over the last month of play.
Batter Grind Down
Tampa Bay
Earlier in the season, CC Sabathia had a much lower wOBA allowed to right-handed hitters than he did to left-handed hitters, but it likely had to do with a small sample size. The numbers have corrected themselves, as he has allowed a .318 to righties this season. If you look at his numbers in the last two years combined, you will see a glowing number next to his home runs allowed to righties (40).

NY Yankees
The Yankees come into tonight’s game with the third highest run projection, but I’m not exactly drinking the Kool-Aid. In his last full season, Alex Cobb held both left and right-handed hitters under a .295 wOBA. He has an above-average strikeout rate and he looked sharp in his first start back from Tommy John surgery. I’m giving the edge to the Rays in this game.

Guerra has to be glad he decided to take a chance on being a pitcher. He is a former catcher that is having a solid season. In 18 starts, he has a 2.85 ERA (4.35 SIERA) with a strikeout rate of 20.8%. While I like his story, I don’t love the Brewers’ run support or his matchup tonight against the Cardinals. On the season, St. Louis is ranked fourth in team wOBA and second in team ISO against right-handed pitching.

Garcia has pitched well at home over the last two seasons, posting a 2.95 ERA with a strikeout rate of 21.5% and a wOBA allowed of only .261. He will face a right-handed heavy Brewers’ lineup tonight, but that isn’t really scaring anyone these days. On the season, Milwaukee has the third highest team K% against left-handed pitching. Garcia will likely be the chalk at pitcher tonight – he seems like the path of least resistance in this ugly late.
Batter Grind Down
Milwaukee
The Brewers are not a good offense, especially on the road. They have decent numbers against southpaws this season, but they come into tonight’s game with the second lowest run projection in the slate. In the last two seasons, Jaime Garcia has held both left and right-handed hitters under a .300 wOBA. He also induces an elite ground ball rate, which leads to more singles than extra-base hits.

St. Louis
The Cardinals have the fourth highest run projection tonight, as they square off against Junior Guerra at home. I have mixed feelings about this matchup. On the one hand, Guerra has held both left and right-handed hitters under a .280 wOBA this season. On the other hand, he has allowed a 38.6% hard contact rate to lefties. Eventually that hard contact is going to hurt his numbers against lefties.
