I often compare Gallardo to Ubaldo Jimenez. Both pitchers are past their prime, both struggle with their command, and both have a below-average strikeout rate this season. Both, however, have been in good form over the last month or so. Jimenez pitched a shutout against the Blue Jays last night to silence his critics and Gallardo will look to do the same tonight. He draws a mediocre matchup against the Yankees, who are ranked 21st in team wOBA and 17th in team ISO against right-handed pitching this season.

Pineda is finally starting to pitch like the guy that we all thought he could be. In his last five starts, he has a 1.90 ERA with a strikeout rate of 33.7%. He draws a boom or bust type of matchup tonight against the Orioles, who are ranked third in team wOBA and 21st in team K% against right-handed pitching this season. Of the two pitchers in this game, I’d much rather side with the one with higher strikeout upside. He may not be a great cash game target, but Pineda’s high ceiling puts him in consideration for tournaments.

Baltimore
The Orioles picked up two huge wins in a row against the Blue Jays in Toronto. They are now a game and a half clear of the Tigers for the second and final wildcard spot in the American League. The Tigers’ game was rained out yesterday though, so one loss by the Orioles could even up the two records. They draw a fairly difficult matchup tonight against Michael Pineda, who has been in impeccable form over the last month of play.

NY Yankees
The Yankees are a below-average offense against right-handed pitching and their hot streak came to an end more than a month ago. The good news is that they get to face Yovani Gallardo, who is typically a cure for offensive woes. In 2016, Gallardo has allowed a .355+ wOBA to both left and right-handed hitters.

Cashner is having a down season overall, posting a 4.68 ERA with a walk rate over 10%. He used to be a streamer when he was with the Padres, but those days are long gone. He comes into tonight’s game as a small underdog against the Nationals, who are just trying to get healthy before the postseason starts. While Cashner may face a few of the Nationals’ backups tonight, he’s still not a recommended fantasy option.

Cole may have a high ERA this season, but the 24.3% strikeout rate is promising. He is a ground ball pitcher that has limited the hard contact against him. There are some encouraging signs here and it could be the perfect night to take a shot on him in tournaments. The Marlins have really struggled offensively over the last month of play, ranking 29th in team wOBA. I could easily see Cole pitching six innings, striking out five or six batters, and picking up the win.

Miami
The Marlins come into tonight’s game with the fifth lowest implied team total in the slate. They draw a decent matchup against A.J. Cole, but their offense as a whole has been ice cold. I generally don’t like to target hitters against elite ground ball pitchers, especially when that high ground ball rate is accompanied by a low hard contact rate.

The Nationals are all but locked into the two-seed in the National League, so their goal in the last three games is to get their players healthy. We will likely see their everyday starters get a game or two off, which helps explain whey they are such small favorites tonight. The matchup against Andrew Cashner is certainly a favorable one, as he has allowed a .376 wOBA to left-handed hitters and a .332 wOBA to right-handed hitters this season.

Gsellman has been sharp in his first major league stint, posting a 2.56 ERA (3.96 SIERA) with a strikeout rate of 22%. He has induced an elite ground ball rate and he has held both left and right-handed hitters under a .300 wOBA. He draws one of the top matchups in the slate, as he faces a Phillies’ offense that is ranked 29th in team wOBA and 26th in team K% against right-handed pitching. I like targeting teams that still have something to play for and the Mets are still fighting for the wildcard in the National League.

Asher is one of the easiest pitchers to gloss over in this slate. His strikeout rate on the season is right around 10%, which isn’t good. He doesn’t walk a ton of hitters, but that’s really the only positive statistic that I can quote. There isn’t enough upside for Asher to warrant consideration tonight.

NY Mets
The Mets are one of my favorite offenses to stack tonight and they should come in at a relatively low ownership. New York has the 12th highest implied team total in the slate, but they are in a must win situation against the Phillies. They draw an excellent matchup against Alec Asher, who has one of the lowest strikeout rates of any pitcher in baseball.

Philadelphia
The Phillies are ranked 20th or worse in every single offensive category listed below. They draw a fairly difficult matchup tonight against Robert Gsellman, who has pitched well in his first six major league starts. Gsellman is a ground ball pitcher that limits the hard contact against him. The Phillies’ offense can be avoided in both cash games and tournaments.

Buchanan is making a spot start for the Cubs, who have already locked up the one-seed in the National League. He has yet to make a start this season and likely won’t be able to pitch very deep into tonight’s game. Regardless of the matchup, Buchanan doesn’t have enough upside to warrant consideration.

Smith has done most of his work out of the bullpen this season, but he will draw a spot start tonight against the Cubs. While he may have the advantage of facing a lineup full of backups, he likely won’t pitch deep enough into the game to be eligible for the win. This could end up being a bullpen game with both teams throwing out spot starters tonight.

Chicago Cubs
The Cubs are ranked eighth in team wOBA against right-handed pitching this season, but as we saw last night, they are starting to rest their everyday players with nothing to play for. There could be some intriguing value plays in their lineup tonight, but we have to wait to see who is actually playing to determine if there are any viable fantasy targets.

Cincinnati
The Reds have nothing to play for, but they also have no reason to rest their starters. They are an interesting offense to target tonight against Jake Buchanan, who hasn’t been great as a reliever this season. Hitters from both sides of the plate are worth a look here, specifically Joey Votto and Adam Duvall.

Estrada seems to be breaking out of his slump. His numbers over the last month of play are close to his season long averages. The Blue Jays really need a strong start from him tonight, as they have lost two in a row and now hold a narrow 1.5-game lead over the Tigers. If they aren’t careful, Toronto could fall out of the postseason altogether. Estrada draws an awful matchup against the Red Sox, who have the best offense in baseball.

Porcello has been in solid form over the last month of play, posting a 3.61 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 22.1%. The Red Sox may have wrapped up the division, but they are still playing for seeding, so we should expect their everyday players to be in the lineup tonight. The main issue with Porcello is his matchup against the Blue Jays, who are ranked seventh in team wOBA and sixth in team ISO against right-handed pitching this season.

Toronto
The Blue Jays really need a win tonight or else the pressure is only going to build. While they are playing in a hitter-friendly ballpark, they draw a difficult matchup against Rick Porcello. In addition to an above-average strikeout rate, Porcello has held both left and right-handed hitters under a .285 wOBA this season.

The Red Sox are ranked eighth or better in every single offensive category listed below. They draw a decent matchup tonight against Marco Estrada, who is an extreme fly ball pitcher. Estrada has been tough on both left and right-handed hitters, but the Red Sox are so tough at home. You can target the Red Sox in tournaments tonight, although they may not be the best point-per-dollar plays.
