Niese should enjoy his new home in Pittsburgh, but unfortunately he has to take a trip to Detroit to take on the Tigers in a game played under American League rules. Niese boasts a below-average strikeout rate and he is facing a lineup that feasts on left-handed pitching. Since the start of last season, the Tigers have the second highest team wOBA against southpaws.

Verlander has been a different pitcher since the All-Star break of last season. He went from being what seemed an over-the-hill pitcher to one that showed flashes of his former brilliance. He should still have an above-average strikeout rate this season and with the offense behind him, he should be able to pick up a number of wins. It feels like the line is a bit off in this one, which gives me some pause. We are better off targeting or in the early slate.

Some people may believe that reverse splits don’t carry a ton of predictive value for a pitcher, but has given up a significantly higher wOBA to right-handed hitters (compared to left-handed hitters) in each of the last three seasons. That may bode well for this Pirates’ offense that is full of righties. , , and all have great numbers against right-handed pitching. Left-handed is also worth a look batting lead-off.

The Tigers have the second highest team total of the ten teams in action in the early slate. As mentioned above, they only trail the Blue Jays for honors as the best hitting team against left-handed pitching. The Tigers’ lineup is stacks with powerful right-handed bats that should really make it tough on , who gave up 17 home runs to hitters from that side of the plate last season. All of the right-handed hitters are in play here with my favorites being , , , and .

Gallardo was an easy pitcher to avoid while he was in Texas and Milwaukee and now that he is in Baltimore, his fantasy appeal only goes down. The American League East is always a tough place for pitchers, especially ones that don’t get a lot of outs by the way of the strikeout. Since the start of 2015, Gallardo has only struck out 15.4% of the hitters that he has faced. The Red Sox are monstrous favorites here and Gallardo should be avoided in all league formats.

Price should be the chalk play in the early slate of games. Since the start of last season, he has a 3.24 SIERA with an elite strikeout rate of 25.7%. He throws a ton of strikes, which typically allows him to pitch deep into games. While the Orioles’ offense looks potent on paper, they really struggled against left-handed pitching last season. With potentially out, their lineup gets even worse against southpaws. Price can maybe be faded in tournaments, but he’s by far my favorite pitcher in the early slate.

The Orioles were one of the worst hitting teams against left-handed pitching last season. That’s not to say that we can’t ever target any Orioles’ bats against southpaws, but we certainly don’t want to pick on . He has held hitters from both sides of the plate under a .285 wOBA over the last two seasons. and are both intriguing GPP plays, as they should both fly under the radar. If you decide to take that route, make sure to pair them with a pitcher not-named Price.

The Red Sox should put up a lot of runs in today’s game against . Fenway Park is one of the best hitter’s parks in baseball and as I mentioned above, Gallardo doesn’t strike very many batters out. The Red Sox should be able to make great contact here and if you look at his splits, Gallardo isn’t particularly effective against hitters from either side of the plate. Load up on the Red Sox in the early slate – both their pitcher and their bats.

Cashner is in a very interesting spot today. While I generally don’t like to target him outside of Petco Park, his matchup against the Phillies has me intrigued. Cashner is a streaky pitcher, but he struck out over 20% of the hitters that he faced last season. In terms of matchups, there may not be a more favorable one that the Phillies. Since the start of last season, they are ranked 30th in team wOBA and 21st in strikeout rate against right-handed pitching. Nola was terrific in his first start of the season, striking out eight batters over seven innings and only surrendering a single run. Given the terrible offense at his back, there aren’t going to be many times when he is listed as a favorite. With and looking like the popular plays at pitcher, Nola could fly under the radar in the early slate. He has nice strikeout upside against the Padres. He makes a fine GPP play on single-pitcher sites and a viable SP2 on multi-pitcher sites.

The Padres’ offense may have had a big series in Denver, but that’s what happens when you play at a mile high. We should never put stock into teams coming off of a big series in Coors Field. The Padres have the second lowest team total on the board in the early slate. You could look to the top of their order for some value though, as has allowed a .338 wOBA to left-handed hitters.

If the Phillies are favored in a game, that means that their offense has to do something, right? They should feel pretty good about themselves, after beating and the Mets in New York yesterday. Quintana got off to a strong start this season, striking out seven batters against the A’s in Oakland. When you simply compare strikeout rates to pitcher salaries, Quintana almost always stands out as a good value. Since the start of 2015, he has a 3.58 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 20.8%. He also produces a decent ground ball rate and he rarely gives up free passes (walks). With all that said, I don’t see him as anything but a GPP flier against the Twins.

The Twins may be a small favorite today at home, but Gibson doesn’t have the upside that we are looking for in a starting pitcher. If you are looking for a cheaper pitcher, I’d rather take my chances with or .

Jungmann had a pretty mediocre start to his season, striking out one batter over five innings of work, while giving up two runs against the Giants. Wacha was not sharp in his first start of the season, giving up ten hits and five runs, while only striking out three batters against the Pirates. He will look to bounce back today against the Brewers, whose offense has been cold to start the season. This is a great opportunity to buy low on Wacha, especially on FanDuel. He is still an above-average pitcher with a decent strikeout rate and a nice matchup against a struggling offense.
Batter Grind Down
Milwaukee
Of the ten teams in the early slate, the Brewers have the lowest team total on the board. That doesn’t exactly inspire confidence in their ability to put up runs. They draw a difficult matchup against , who has actually been tougher on left-handed hitters than he has on right-handed hitters in his career. I’ll be avoiding the Brewers in all league formats.

St. Louis
The Cardinals have the fourth highest team total in the early slate, as they take on young . The sample size is still pretty small with Jungmann, but so far he has given up pretty equal splits. I’ll go ahead and give the tiebreaker to the left-handed batters in this lineup, as they are really the only targets that I am looking at from St. Louis.
