Bumgarner continues his stellar year this afternoon with a tough start at Wrigley. He has a 3.43 SIERA and elite 27.4% strikeout rate. The matchup is less than ideal today against the Cubs who rank first in team wOBA against left handed pitching and third in ISO. With that said, he is always in play in tournament settings due to his high upside, but the price tag may be tough to shell out this afternoon.

What a solid way to start the day, as we have two aces going up against each other. Arrieta has not had the same type of second half as last year, which is a bit concerning, as he has a 4.54 SIERA and just a 19.1% strikeout rate over his last 10 starts (dating back to July 1st). His price tag has dropped, especially on DraftKings, where he is under $10k. The price tag puts him into tournament play consideration today, yet I would rather pay for Bumgarner in this matchup.
Batter Grind Down
San Francisco
While Arrieta has not been the superhuman pitcher he was last season, he has still kept batters from both sides of the plate to a wOBA under .262 on the year. This game is not exactly one we should be using to target for offensive plays today, as it has one of the lowest totals of the slate.

The Cubs have one of their lower projected run totals at Wrigley of the year at just 3.76 runs, which is the sixth lowest on the day. Bumgarner has kept batters from both sides of the plate to a wOBA under .273. They are not an offense we want to pay up for today.

Musgrove will be starting for Dallas Keuchel, aawhose start has been pushed back a couple days. Musgrove has had a decent start to his rookie season with a 3.54 SIERA after his first five starts to go along with a usable 23.5% strikeout rate. The problem today is the matchup against the Rangers in Texas. The Astros are small favorites, but this game features one of the highest totals of the day for both teams. Musgrove should get some run support, so if he can keep the Rangers at bay, he is viable at sites where the win is important.

Holland has had a couple decent starts in a row now, but his season numbers were terrible prior. He comes into the game with a 5.07 SIERA and just a 14.8% strikeout rate. He now has to face a Houston offense that is full of power righties that should give him fits today. Avoid Holland.
Batter Grind Down
Houston
The Astros have the fourth-highest projected total on the entire slate today at 4.89 runs. The list below shows a ton of blue, especially in the ISO section, which does not bode well for Holland, who has allowed righties a wOBA of .330 on the year. They make a solid offense for both tournaments and cash games today.

Garcia has struggled a bit over his last three starts, as he has allowed seven hits in each, and 16 total earned runs over 16 innings pitched. On the season, he sports a solid 3.95 SIERA and slightly below average strikeout rate of 19.5%. He is pitching in a hitter’s park today in Cincinnati, which makes him a risky play until we see him turn around this bad streak of starts.

Straily is not someone we want to use in daily fantasy too often. He has a 4.63 SIERA and 19.9% strikeout rate. He has a very tough matchup today against the Cardinals, who rank fourth in wOBA and second in ISO against right-handed pitching. The matchup alone makes him very difficult to use today.

This Cardinals offense could pack a punch today against Straily as they have the eighth-highest projected run total of the day at 4.65 runs. Straily has allowed lefties to a .298 wOBA and righties a .305 wOBA. Their offense is in play in both cash and tournaments for the early slate.

The Reds have a pretty high run total today at 4.35 runs, which is 12th-highest on the day. Garcia has not shut down either side of the plate this year, as he has allowed a .314+ wOBA to both righties and lefties. They are not my favorite offense to target on the early slate, but they do have some decent value.

Estrada has began to struggle a bit over the last month. His ERA is over a run and a half higher than it was the rest of the season, and his SIERA has taken a bit of a bump as well. More importantly for DFS, his strikeout rate has dipped down to 18%, taking away a good amount of upside. With that said, he has a decent matchup today against the Rays today, an offense that strikes out at a very high rate against righties (23.7%). I wish his price was lower, but he is in play as an SP2.

Snell has had a solid rookie campaign. After 14 starts, he has a 3.56 ERA and solid 23.2% strikeout rate. His SIERA does show some regression is in order, as it sits more than a full run higher than his ERA at 4.68. The matchup today is the real problem even though it is in pitcher friendly Tropicana, he has to face a non-pitcher friendly offense in the Blue Jays who rank sixth in both wOBA and ISO against left-handed pitching. The matchup makes him way to dangerous to use except for tournament settings only.

If the Blue Jays were at home their run total would be in the top-10 today, but since they are in Tampa they are just a middle of the road total. Yet, they have a solid matchup against Snell who has allowed a .340 wOBA to righties on the year.

Gant comes into this game with a sub-4.00 SIERA and a decent 22.9% strikeout rate in his 13 appearances. With that said, he is an easy fade on the night slate, as he will likely not be able to pitch deep into the ball game and Vegas has the Braves as decent underdogs. Avoid him.

Velasquez has been a bit frustrating as the season progresses. He always has upside, as evidenced by his 27.4% strikeout rate this season. Yet, he has struggled at times (allowed 19 earned runs in the three games before his last start), and he only has about 25 more innings to pitch before his expected innings cap is reached. This makes him a riskier play today, even though he does have a solid matchup against the Braves, who of course rank in the bottom third of the league in the majority of offensive categories. Play him in tournaments, but realize there is risk attached.

Velasquez has allowed lefties a wOBA of .348 on the year, meaning we can attack him with some of the guys like Ender Inciarte and Freddie Freeman. Other than them, the Braves are usually a tough offense to target unless they are facing a terrible pitcher.
