Cosart has been one of the worst starting pitchers in baseball in the last two seasons. He has a SIERA over 5.40 with a walk rate that is higher than his strikeout rate. He induces a lot of ground balls, but that doesn’t do a lot of good when you aren’t striking anyone out. Eventually those ground balls are going to find holes in the infield and turn into base hits. Cosart should not be on your radar tonight in a road start against the Mets.
Quick Breakdown: Avoid Cosart in all formats.

Gsellman is one of the better value plays in the slate tonight. His price is all the way down to $6,500 on FanDue, $6,200 on DraftKings, and $12,300 on FantasyDraft. He showed a lot of promise in his seven starts last season, but has gotten off to a slow start this year. He hasn’t been generating as many swings and misses, but that could be cured with a matchup against the Padres, who have the second highest strikeout rate of any team against right-handed pitching. Gsellman is a favorite, he’s pitching at home, and he has a good strikeout matchup.
Quick Breakdown: Gsellman is an elite SP2 on multi-pitcher sites, especially if you are trying to fit Chris Sale.
Batter Grind Down
San Diego
There will be some interest in Wil Myers, Yangervis Solarte, and Ryan Schimpf as one-off targets tonight, but Robert Gsellman has held lefties to a .299 xwOBA and righties to a 29% hard contact rate. He also has a 51%+ ground ball rate to batters from both sides of the plate. This game has a high over/under of 9.0 runs, but I expect most of that to come from the Mets’ offense.

NY Mets
Jarred Cosart is not a good major league pitcher. He has more walks than strikeouts in the last two seasons and has a SIERA over 5.40 during that stretch. He has some serious reverse-splits, which isn’t great for the left-handed heavy Mets’ lineup, but Cosart has still allowed a .331 xwOBA to lefties. The Mets are always an intriguing stack because they have a nice mix of speed and power and they can put runs on the board quickly.

Williams is making his fourth start of the season and the fifth of his major league career. He has also made some appearance out of the bullpen. It hasn’t gone as planned so far, as he currently boasts a 6.63 ERA with a strikeout rate of only 15%. The Braves may have lost Freddie Freeman, but they made a great move in acquiring Matt Adams. Williams is an easy fade in this ballpark that has been great to left-handed power hitters.

Teheran used to love pitching at home. His numbers in Atlanta were better than they were on the road in basically every stat category you could imagine. Unfortunately, they had to open the beautiful new SunTrust Park and close down Turner Field. The new park does not fit Teheran’s strong suits, as it is a great ballpark for lefties. Teheran’s biggest struggle throughout his career has been left-handed hitters. The Pirates don’t have many lefties in their lineup, but until Teheran can pitch a little better at home, he can be avoided in all formats.
Quick Breakdown: There are better options for both cash games and tournaments.
Batter Grind Down
Pittsburgh
When it comes to Julio Teheran, it’s pretty simple – fade the right-handed hitters facing him and load up on the lefties. Since the start of last season, he has alloewd a .346 xwOBA and a 35% hard contact rate to left-handed hitters. He also gives up a higher walk rate and strikes out fewer lefties. Josh Bell is a tremendous play in this ballpark and is still underpriced across the industry. I don’t mind Adam Frazier and John Jaso as well, but I don’t see them as core plays in this slate.

Atlanta
My hope is that the Braves’ offense gets overlooked tonight. There are some teams with some very high implied run totals, so hopefully everyone will shift their focus away from Atlanta. I’ve already mentioned that this ballpark is great for left-handed hitters and when you throw in a matchup against Trevor Williams, the Braves find themselves in a great spot. Matt Adams is going to be very popular after his hot start with the Braves, but he’s an excellent value across the board. The rest of the one through six batters in this lineup are also on my radar.

Moore is a pitcher that I don’t target on the road, unless he is facing the Padres in Petco Park. Joe Maddon loved to pull Kyle Hendricks after 80 pitches in seemingly every start last season, but that hasn’t been the case this year. Hendricks has thrown at least 90 pitches in every start and he has rebounded nicely after a slow start. He gets to pitch in great conditions tonight, as it is expected to be cold (50 degrees or so) with the wind blowing in from left field. The over/under for the game is set at only 7.0 runs and Hendricks is a -190 favorite. The Giants may not strikeout at a high rate, but they are ranked dead last in team wOBA against right-handed pitching.
Quick Breakdown: Chris Sale, Luis Severino, and Kyle Hendricks are my top three pitchers in this slate. All three are viable in all formats.

The Giants do not hit right-handed pitching well and are facing a quality pitcher in a game with bad hitting conditions. It is expected to be cold and the wind is blowing in straight from left field. I would be interested in Brandon Belt if the wind was blowing out, but that’s not the case tonight.

Chicago Cubs
On paper, this is a really good spot for the Cubs’ offense. Matt Moore struggles on the road, he is a fly-ball pitcher, and the Cubs mash left-handed pitching. I would typically be all over a Cubs’ stack in tournaments and would be looking at the likes of Ben Zobrist, Kris Bryant, and Willson Contreras in cash games. However, with the wind blowing in straight from left field and with the the low over/under, I find myself looking elsewhere in this ten game slate.

Norris has more talent than his numbers would lead you to believe, but the current form is obviously a big issue. In eight starts, he has a 4.73 SIERA with a walk rate of 10% and a hard contact rate of 46%. He is a huge underdog tonight against the Astros, who no longer strikeout at a high rate against left-handed pitching. The time will come to roster Norris, but that time is not tonight.
Quick Breakdown: Avoid Norris in all formats.

If you have read the Grind Down this season, then you are aware of my affinity for Mr. Morton. He has always been a ground ball pitcher and now that he’s found a way to strike batters out at a 26%+ clip, he has turned into a very good pitcher. The biggest change for Morton has been his velocity. His fastball on average is five MPH faster this season than it has been in each of the last three years. When you are throwing 96+ MPH, it does so much for your off-speed pitches. I’m a little concerned about his matchup against the Tigers, since he has had reverse-splits in the last couple of season, but I will still be loading up on Morton in tournaments.
Quick Breakdown: There are safer options in cash games, but Morton is an excellent GPP play once again.
Batter Grind Down
Detroit
In DFS, I try to stay away from high strikeout pitchers and from high ground ball pitchers when I’m looking at offenses. Charlie Morton has a 26% strikeout rate and has always had an above-average strikeout rate. The Tigers hit right-handed pitching well, but they are deep tournament plays tonight.

Houston
The Astros have one of the highest implied run totals in the slate and for good reason. They are facing a pitcher that has a 10% walk rate and a 46% hard contact rate this season. Norris has always struggled against righties, allowing a .346 xwOBA in the last two years. The Astros will throw nine right-handed batters at him tonight and a full stack is firmly in play. The one through five batters are all viable cash game targets as well.

I seem to say this every time Leake is on the mound, but he’s a better pitcher in real baseball than he is in fantasy baseball. He induces a lot of ground balls and a lot of soft and medium contact. He has good command and rarely gives up a big outing to his opponent. Unfortunately, his 17% strikeout rate doesn’t translate into a lot of success in DFS. He is an easy fade tonight against the Dodgers, who are one of the best offenses in baseball against right-handed pitching.

When Hill doesn’t have a blister, he is one of the most deadly left-handed pitchers in baseball. His curveball is basically unhittable and is why he has such a high strikeout rate. I expect him to pitch well tonight at home against the Cardinals, but there are reasons to be careful with our exposure. He has been injury prone throughout his career and has yet to throw more than 82 pitches in a game this season. The upside is there, but there are enough options that I don’t see him as a core play in this slate.
Quick Breakdown: Hill has massive strikeout potential, but you never know how many pitches he is going to throw.

The Cardinals have one of the lowest implied run totals in the slate and draw an awful matchup against Rich Hill, who has held both left and right-handed hitters under a .275 xwOBA and under a 31% hard contact rate in the last two seasons. I’ll take a hard pass on St. Louis tonight.

LA Dodgers
The Dodgers are usually in play against right-handed hitters, but I’m bearish on them tonight in a matchup against Mike Leake. In addition to an elite ground ball rate, Leake has held both left and right-handed hitters under a .315 xwOBA and under a 31% hard contact rate. Corey Seager and Yasmani Grandal are viable one-off targets, but I plan to have less exposure to the Dodgers than the field.
