MLB Grind Down: Friday, July 29th

The RotoGrinders MLB Grind Down will give you an in-depth analysis into the upcoming MLB schedule. This article will break down the numbers for every single game and give you analysis on which trends you can exploit. While matchups are a major factor in daily fantasy baseball, there are plenty of other factors to consider such as injuries, weather, and salaries.

The analysis should point you in the right direction, but it is still up to you to decipher the information and make your own selections. No sport has more variance than baseball. The best choice is not always the right choice but following the trends will win you money over time.

Iwakuma is no longer an elite strikeout pitcher. In 20 starts this season, he has a 4.45 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 17.7%. His fly ball rate and hard hit contact rate are both way up this season, which could help explain the higher SIERA. He draws a difficult matchup today against the Cubs, who are ranked ninth in team wOBA and 14th in team ISO against right-handed pitching this season.

Lester has been in awful form recently, posting a 5.19 SIERA (7.23 ERA) with a strikeout rate of 17.6% in his last five starts. he will look to regain some of that early season momentum, as he takes on the Mariners at home. Seattle has been a mediocre offense against left-handed pitching this season, ranking 19th in team wOBA and ninth in team ISO. I have him ranked as the fourth best pitching option in the all-day slate, but I prefer a few of the arms pitching tonight.

Batter Grind Down

Seattle

The Mariners come into this game with the fourth lowest team total on the board. While that’s not very promising, Jon Lester has been struggling in his last few starts. His command hasn’t been nearly as good, which has led to a 12% walk rate. The one potential plus in this matchup is that Lester has allowed 27 home runs to right-handed hitters in the last two seasons.

Chicago Cubs

The Cubs’ offense has cooled off after a blazing start to the season. They continue to be listed as heavy favorites almost every day though, thanks to a good pitching staff and the potential to put up a lot of runs. They have a mediocre run projection today against Hisashi Iwakuma. While he is no longer an elite strikeout pitcher, he has still held both left and right-handed hitters under a .320 wOBA in the last two seasons.

Gausman has flown under the radar all season, despite posting a 3.78 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 22.5%. I keep waiting for the right matchup, but when you are in the American League East you don’t get a ton of easy matchups. That tough sledding continues tonight against the Blue Jays, who are ranked sixth in team wOBA and fourth in team ISO against right-handed pitching. The risk outweighs the potential reward here.

Estrada is not going to be a popular play tonight. Everyone is going to see his extreme fly-ball rate and his matchup against the Orioles and immediately think to fade him. I’m higher on him than most though, which is strange because I’ve been off of him for most of the season. While Baltimore does rank high in team wOBA and team ISO against right-handed pitching, they also have the eighth highest strikeout rate. Fly balls aren’t always a bad thing for a pitcher, as long as they aren’t going over the fence. I’ll be using Estrada in a few GPP lineups tonight.

Batter Grind Down

Baltimore

Even though I have my eye on Marco Estrada for tournaments, that doesn’t mean that I won’t be using any Orioles tonight. They will just be in different lineups. As I mentioned above, the Orioles hit a lot of home runs and Estrada is an extreme fly-ball pitcher. Over the last two seasons, he has given up 38 home runs, 25 of which were to left-handed hitters.

I don’t love the spot for him tonight though, as he is a reverse-splits pitcher that has to face a Tigers’ lineup that consists primarily of right-handed hitters. He draws a decent matchup tonight against the Astros, but he still has to deal with the likes of George Springer, Jose Altuve, and Carlos Correa. Even at his cheap price point, Boyd is not on my radar in this slate.

Chatwood has really struggled this season, posting a 4.81 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 15.1% and a walk rate of 10.5%. He does induce a lot of ground balls, but when you aren’t striking anyone out, those ground balls will eventually find some holes through the infield. Even though he is facing the ice-cold Mets’ offense, there is no reason to consider Chatwood tonight. There isn’t enough upside to make up for the runs that he is likely going to allow.

He doesn’t generate as many swings and misses as a few of his teammates, but he is a reliable pitcher in DFS. He draws a favorable matchup tonight against the Rockies, who continue to struggle offensively away from Coors Field. The Rockies have the second lowest implied team total on the schedule tonight. They have not fared well on the road this season and they have been slumping as a whole in the last couple of weeks. The Mets have been as easy fade offensively for the better part of a month now, but with a matchup against Tyler Chatwood, they deserve some consideration tonight for tournaments. The one drawback to the matchup is Chatwood’s elite ground ball rate. However, with such a low strikeout rate, it usually hasn’t been a problem for his opponents. Nova has been a completely different pitcher over the last month of play, posting a 3.41 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 25.8%. The high strikeout rate seems a bit out of character, has he had a 15.3% k-rate a year ago and he has an 18.1% k-rate this season. While I don’t trust it in the long run, I could see him having another nice outing tonight. The Rays have the third highest strikeout rate against right-handed pitching and Nova gets to face them in a pitcher’s park.

As I continue to mention over and over again, we no longer have to avoid taking pitchers against the Yankees. Sure, they have a low strikeout rate as a whole, but they are ranked 21st in team wOBA and 23rd in team ISO against right-handed pitching this season. They also average the ninth fewest pitches per plate appearance, which helps pitch counts. Odorizzi has always pitched better at home and his reverse-splits actually make sense against the Yankees. He is one of my favorite GPP plays on the board tonight.

Batter Grind Down

NY Yankees

The Yankees have the fifth lowest team total on the board. Their offense continues to struggle, especially on the road. They draw a mediocre matchup against Jake Odorizzi, but his numbers at home are a lot better than they are on the road. With Odorizzi’s reverse-splits, there aren’t any Yankees’ hitters that stand out as elite plays tonight.

Tampa Bay

What do we trust more when it comes to Ivan Nova? His recent four-game sample or his numbers over the last two seasons combined? If you think his recent outings are more of a flash in the pan type of situation, then you may want to look to the Rays in tournaments. They will be low owned and Nova has allowed a .372 wOBA to left-handed hitters in the last two seasons.
