Whew boy, Kershaw is getting expensive! Am I still willing to pay up for him? Of course I am. He is the best pitcher in baseball, he doesn’t really have any bad outings, and there are enough cheap bats that you can fit him into your lineup without too many problems. Kershaw boasts a 2.29 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 33.1%. Today he gets to face an offensively-challenged Braves’ team that is ranked dead last in wOBA against left-handed pitching. You can fade Kershaw in tournaments, but he is the top cash game option in the early-only and all-day slates.

Wisler was once a top prospect, but one that has yet to find success at the major league level. In 21 starts, he has a 4.88 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 15.4% and a walk rate of 7.9%. He is a fly ball pitcher that doesn’t fare well against left-handed hitters. That could spell trouble for him today against a very talented Dodgers’ lineup. As the biggest underdog on the board, Wisler can be avoided in all league formats.

The Dodgers are one of the best offenses in baseball, especially when they are facing a right-handed pitching. They have the ninth highest team total on the board at 4.28 runs. The left-handed bats in this lineup have the edge splits-wise, as Wisler has allowed a .413 wOBA and 12 home runs to hitters from that side of the plate. I should note that the Dodgers are letting bat clean-up on his birthday.

Karns has been serviceable in his first two starts of the season, striking out 13 batters while allowing five runs over ten innings of work. He draws a tough matchup today against the Indians in Cleveland. This game is basically set as a pick ‘em with the over/under set at 8.5 runs. Karns has shown nice strikeout upside, but the Indians have the seventh lowest strikeout rate against right-handed pitching over the last two seasons. Karns is a deep GPP target today.

I mentioned in his last start that Anderson was going to have some serious regression this season. The gap between his SIERA and his ERA last year was way too big, which suggests he had some great fortune. He had an awful outing against the Mets and I’m not expecting him to fare much better against the Mariners. In general, we don’t want to target starting pitchers that have a strikeout rate of 12%.

If you look at splits alone, this may not seem like a great matchup. However, as I mentioned above, the advanced statistics suggest that Anderson should have some regression this season. The Mariners have the tenth highest team total on the board today and as a team they have the sixth highest ISO against right-handed pitching. Hitters from both sides of the plate are in play here.

After completing my research for today’s slate, I realized that my model had Scherzer ranked ahead of . At first glance, I figured Arrieta would be right behind as the top pitching option of the day. At the end of the day, we are splitting hairs here and we really don’t even need to use Scherzer since he and Kershaw are both in the early slate. He provides great upside in today’s matchup against the Marlins. For whatever reason, Scherzer has struggled with allowing home runs over the last two seasons. That should be negated by the massive Marlins Park that is one of the toughest ballparks to hit home runs in. It also helps that and are both out of the lineup today.

Odorizzi has pitched well over the last two seasons, sporting a 3.81 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 22%. He has nice upside, but his splits away from home make me hesitant to target him on the road. His matchup against the Red Sox doesn’t help matters, as Boston is ranked ninth in team wOBA and third in strikeout rate against right-handed pitching. We should wait at least one more start before giving Odorizzi a longer look.

Price has allowed nine runs in his first three starts. While that’s not great from a real-life baseball perspective, we are just fine with it in DFS if he continues to strike batters out at the same rate. He already has 27 strikeouts this season. Today he gets to face his former team in the Rays. While they are better against left-handed pitching, this is still an offense that I don’t mind picking on. Price has massive strikeout potential and he should go under-owned with and in such great spots.

Nolasco has better numbers than I originally expected him to have. Since the start of last season, he owns a 4.07 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 18.9%. He’s one of those pitchers that is hard to trust until he can prove that he can string together a few quality starts. While I love the matchup against the Brewers, he has to face them in the hitter-friendly Miller Park. For now, let’s take a wait and see approach with Nolasco.

Jungmann is making his 25th career start today. In the first 24, he has a 4.13 SIERA and a strikeout rate of 20.8%. He does walk too many batters for my liking, but his numbers have been much better at home. His strikeout rate jumps up to 22%, while his walk rate comes down to 8%. He is an intriguing tournament play in the early-only slate, as the Twins do not hit right-handed pitching well as a team, ranking 26th in wOBA and 22nd in strikeout rate.

Team wOBA vs. RHP — 0.299 (26 of 30)
Team ISO vs. RHP — 0.150 (13 of 30)
Runs Per Game — 3.00 (26 of 30)
Projected Run Total — 4.16 (12 of 26)
While I like as a sneaky GPP play today, I also like a few of the Twins’ hitters against him. Since the start of last season, Jungmann has allowed a .328 wOBA and ten home runs to right-handed hitters. The Twins come in with the 12th highest team total of the 26 teams in action today.

The Brewers’ offense came alive last night, scoring ten runs against and the Twins. They should be able to keep it going today against , who hasn’t been particularly effective against hitters from either side of the plate. The Brewers have the seventh highest team total on the board at 4.34 runs.
