There are six early games on the schedule today. The Dodgers/Diamonbacks game is featured in the early slate on DraftKings, but not on FanDuel. Keep that in mind when reading the Grind Down. We start with Williams, who has a 2.29 ERA that is not supported by his peripheral statistics. Through six starts, he has a 5.41 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 16% and a walk rate of 12%. The Nationals are missing a few of their best hitters, but they still have enough talent to knock Williams around a bit.
Quick Breakdown: Avoid Williams in all formats.

Hellickson had a disappointing 2017 season and he’s off to a familiar start here in 2018. In three starts, he has a 4.83 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 15%. He’s done a nice job of limiting hard contact, but that hasn’t helped him much. His matchup against the Pirates isn’t particularly difficult, but they have one of the lowest strikeout rates in baseball against right-handed pitching.
Quick Breakdown: We have a low strikeout pitcher against a low strikeout offense.
Batter Grind Down
Pittsburgh
The Pirates draw their best matchup so far this series, as they take on Jeremy Hellickson. Over the last two seasons, he has allowed a .344+ xwOBA to both left and right-handed hitters. There aren’t any standout plays from Pittsburgh, but their offense as a whole is in a good spot. I would treat the Pirates’ hitters as lineup fillers rather than lineup starters.

Washington
The Nationals are in a good spot once again. They aren’t huge favorites here, but the total for the game is set at 9.5 runs. Trevor Williams is a low-strikeout pitcher that has struggled with right-handed hitters in his career. This brings the full Nationals’ stack into play, as we can always target Bryce Harper and Matt Adams against righties, even ones with reverse splits.

Teheran has an above-average strikeout rate, but is a risky fantasy option every time he takes the mound. He’s a fly-ball pitcher with hard contact and control issues. For him to deserve consideration in DFS, he needs to be facing a right-handed heavy lineup in a pitcher-friendly ballpark. The Mets are projected to have six lefties in their lineup, which is more than enough to take me off of Teheran.
Quick Breakdown: Until Teheran can get lefties out, we can only target him against right-handed heavy lineups.

Vargas is making his second start of the season. He’s been a decent fantasy option over the years, but is coming off of a subpar 2017 campaign. In 32 starts last season, he posted a 4.86 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 18%. At this point, we should be scared to target pitchers against this Braves’ offense. With Ronald Acuna playing well, they now have good power from both sides of the plate.
Quick Breakdown: The pitching options have been ugly so far, but it will get better.
Batter Grind Down
Atlanta
The fact that we have a total of 9.0 runs in this ballpark is all we need to know to fade the two starting pitchers. The Braves draw a decent matchup against Jason Vargas, who has allowed a .330+ xwOBA to both left and right-handed hitters over the last two seasons. Ozzie Albies, Freddie Freeman, and Kurt Suzuki all have good number against southpaws, but don’t forget about Ronald Acuna.

NY Mets
The Mets have an easy matchup to break down. Basically, play the left-handed hitters and avoid the right-handed hitters. Julio Teheran has some of the biggest splits by handedness of any pitcher in baseball. He’s allowed a .364 xwOBA, a 37% hard contact rate, and a 13% walk rate to lefties. Meanwhile, he’s held righties to a .293 xwOBA, a 25% strikeout rate, and a 5% walk rate.

Garcia had a nice start to the year, but has cooled off since. He’s one of the streakiest pitchers in baseball, so when he starts trending in the wrong direction, we want to hop off before the masses. He’s an easy fade today against the Indians, who have a number of right-handed power hitters in their lineup. Garcia comes into the game as a large underdog and run support may be limited with Carlos Carrasco pitching opposite him.

Carrasco has seen a significant dip in his strikeout rate this season. While it’s still above the major league average, it is 7% lower than last season. There hasn’t been a major change in his velocity or pitch selection, so perhaps it’s just due to the small sample size. He is still generating a lot of swings and misses, so for now, I’m not overly concerned. We do have his wonky home splits to worry about, though. In each of the last four seasons, he has fared much better on the road than he has at home.
Quick Breakdown: Carrasco is the safest pitching option of the early slate, but he’s far from a sure thing.

The Blue Jays are a hit or miss offense on the road. More often than not, they are a miss, especially when facing a pitcher as talented as Carlos Carrasco. In addition to have an above-average strikeout rate, he has held both left and right-handed hitters under a .310 xwOBA over the last two seasons. Even with Josh Donaldson expected back, the Blue Jays are a fade in this matchup.

The Indians have one of the highest implied run totals in the early slate, but I’m not sure a full stack is warranted. They have quite a few lefties in their lineup and since the start of last season, Jaime Garcia has held left-handed hitters to a .280 xwOBA and a 56% ground ball rate. The righties are firmly in play though, as Francisco Lindor, Jose Ramirez, and Edwin Encarnacion all boast a .370+ xwOBA against southpaws.

We have two of the best offenses in baseball, yet this series has been all about the pitching. We saw dominant performances from Charlie Morton and Justin Verlander in the first two games and then another one from Luis Severino last night. Tanaka will look to continue the trend. Once again, his SIERA is significantly lower thanks to a high HR/FB rate. At this point, maybe we shouldn’t expect Tanaka to regress to the league average when it comes to home runs because it has been a problem for him for years. He has the talent to dominate in any matchup, but he’s a tough sell on the road against the Astros. They hit a lot of home runs and strikeout at a very low rate against right-handed pitching.
Quick Breakdown: I’m a Tanaka homer (pun intended), but he’s an easy pitcher to avoid today.

McCullers does two things very well – he strikes batters out (32%) and he keeps the ball on the ground (62%). I absolutely love pitchers with this skillset, because it gives them two ways to get out of jams. The Yankees have some big right-handed hitters in their lineup, but that’s not a huge concern for McCullers, who has a 64% ground ball rate and a 25% strikeout rate against righties over the last two seasons. He’s the preferred target in this game and one of the top pitching options on the board.
Quick Breakdown: Taking a pitcher against the Yankees makes me a little nauseous, but I’m on McCullers today.

NY Yankees
The Yankees have arguably the worst matchup of the slate. Many would argue that Carlos Carrasco is better than Lance McCullers, but the numbers suggest otherwise. In addition to his elite strikeout rate and elite ground ball rate, McCullers has held both left and right-handed hitters under a .300 xwOBA over the last two seasons. The bad McCullers will show up every now and then, but he’s incredibly tough to hit when he’s locked in.

Houston
The Astros draw a boom or bust matchup against Masahiro Tanaka. While he has been tough on both left and right-handed hitters throughout his career, he continues to struggle with home runs. He has given up 49 home runs since the beginning of last season, which is one of the highest marks in baseball. I won’t be stacking the Astros, but we can try to catch their home run upside with one-offs.

This game features two of the most attackable pitchers in the early slate, but it’s being played in a pitcher-friendly ballpark. The fact that we have a total of 9.5 runs in this ballpark tells us everything we need to know about these pitchers. Fiers has seen a huge dip in his strikeout rate this season and is one of those pitchers that we want to steer clear of when in bad form.

Skoglund has been better than last season, but it didn’t take a whole lot to improve on a 5.83 SIERA and a 13% walk rate. His velocity is up a tick this season and he’s generating more swings and misses, but I do not expect him to sustain a 21% strikeout rate. The Tigers are thought of as a high-strikeout offense, but six of their projected starters have a strikeout rate under 16% against southpaws.
Quick Breakdown: Skoglund doesn’t have the strikeout upside needed to make up for the runs that he’ll likely give up.

The Tigers aren’t playing in the most hitter-friendly of ballparks, but they draw a favorable matchup against Eric Skoglund. Since the beginning of last season, he has allowed a .370+ xwOBA and a 39%+ hard contact rate to both left and right-handed hitters. I’m never a fan of stacking the Tigers on the road, but there are some intriguing plays here. Miguel Cabrera, Nick Castellanos, and James McCann all boast a .415+ xwOBA against southpaws.

I hate to admit it, but I’ve fallen for the Royals’ high implied run totals a number of times this season and it has yet to pay off. They have one of the highest totals of the early slate and I can already feel myself getting sucked right back in. Over the last two seasons, Mike FIers has allowed a .345+ xwOBA to both left and right-handed hitters. Mike Moustakas, Salavador Perez, and Lucas Duda are all viable here and if you really want to make it a stack, Whit Merrifield can be added to the mix as well.
