Thor takes the mound for his third start of the season. He has been dominant (to say the least) in his first two outings, allowing a single run while striking out 21 batters over 13 innings of work. He draws his best matchup to date, as he faces a Phillies’ offense that is ranked 29th in team wOBA and 21st in strikeout rate against right-handed pitching. Syndergaard is an elite strikeout pitcher that doesn’t make many mistakes. This is still baseball, so obviously anything can happen. However, it’s hard to picture Syndergaard having trouble tonight. He is the top pitching option on the board.

Eickhoff was a popular value pick in his last start, as he drew a favorable matchup against the Padres. He easily paid off his cheap salary in that outing, striking out nine batters over seven innings of work. While we should keep our eye on this young right-handed pitcher, there is no reason to look his way tonight. The Mets are a very capable offense that only continues to get better. Run support could also be an issue for Eickhoff, as is pitching opposite him.

There is good news and bad news for Lyles tonight. It’s always easier to digest the bad news first so we will start there. Unfortunately, Lyles has not become a better pitcher overnight. Since the start of last season, he owns a 4.80 SIERA with a strikeout rate of only 13.8%. The good news is that he is not pitching in Coors Field. Is that enough of a reason to give him a look tonight? No, not really. He is a small underdog on the road against the Reds in a game that features a total of 9.0 runs.

Straily has bounced around the majors and the minor leagues the last few seasons and now finds himself starting for the Reds. Over his career, he has a 4.64 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 19.1%. He has pitched well as a reliever this season and has a chance to stick in the starting rotation with a quality start tonight. While we don’t mind targeting the Rockies away from Coors Field, this game has the highest total on the board tonight. I have Straily ranked above , but that’s not saying a whole lot.

The Rockies have the third highest team total on the board tonight, as they square off against in the hitter-friendly Great American Ballpark. Straily has allowed a significantly higher wOBA to left-handed hitters, but I still the the right-handed bats in this lineup as secondary options. It’s never a bad idea to target the offenses with the highest team totals.

Roark pitched well in his last start, striking out four batters in seven scoreless innings against the Braves. The issue with Roark is that it takes that type of effort (a near perfect start) for him to reach value. He has one of the lowest strikeout rates of any starting pitcher in baseball (14.9%). While I don’t mind the matchup against the Marlins, run support may be hard to come by tonight with pitching opposite him.

Fernandez was out-pitched by in his last start, but he still has one of the highest strikeout rates in baseball. In his career, his strikeout rate is just short of 30% and he doesn’t give out many free passes. The one concern is that the Marlins want to limit his innings this season, which could lead to his starts being around 100 pitches rather than 110 pitches. I have as my top pitching option tonight, but Fernandez is a close second. He has just as much upside as any pitcher in the slate.

The Nationals draw a difficult matchup against . I wouldn’t use the splits in the table above, because Fernandez has only made 13 starts in the last two seasons. Anderson has pitched well in his first two starts. He has only allowed three runs (all unearned) while striking out nine batters in 11 innings of work. He doesn’t exactly fit the mold of what we are looking for in DFS though. Since the start of last season, he owns a 4.23 SIERA with a below-average strikeout rate of 17.6%. Given the low strikeout potential and the fact that he is an underdog on the road, Anderson can be avoided in all league formats tonight.

Hughes is too erratic for my liking. The pitcher position is the most predictable in daily fantasy baseball and we don’t want to waste it on a pitcher that is so inconsistent. His strikeout rate has really dipped over the last two seasons and he can’t seem to keep the ball in the park, allowing 31 home runs during that stretch. He may be a small favorite here, but is a much better play at a similar price point. Don’t let a matchup against the Brewers lure you in. Stay strong!

The Brewers’ offense has been awful to start the season, but they draw a nice matchup tonight against . Hughes is a fly ball pitcher that hasn’t been particularly effective to hitters from either side of the plate. In addition to the 31 home runs allowed, he has given up a .322 wOBA to left-handed hitters and a .366 wOBA to right-handed hitters.

The Twins have the second highest team total on the board tonight, as they host and the Diamondbacks. Anderson is a fly ball pitcher that has allowed a .319+ wOBA to both left and right-handed hitters. This could be a great series for the Twins’ hitters to really get back on track.
